Panny's HDV Camera?

Re: Panny's HDV Camera?

People are assuming that the Sony will be better for film out, because it's higher resolution.

Several people who attended the SMPTE demonstration and saw the Sony projected digitally on the big screen said "useless".

Some said it was the projector's fault, but in private conversations with some who were there, they say "no way".

So, as always, the only way to know is to test. As part of the big DVX/XL2/FX1 test, we'll be doing a film transfer. We'll transfer CF24 footage, as well as 60i footage. Then we'll know if the FX1 is suitable, or if it's great, or if it's lousy, at being transferred to film and shown on the big screen.

Re: Panny's HDV Camera?

It would absolutely kill the sony, hands down.

I'd buy one in an instant if that happened.

Re: Panny's HDV Camera?

Barry, when is the test going to take place?

Also what would a good telecine back to tape and transfer to DVD cost?  You could put in on a nice Rank or even a Spirit (I think that's the name).  I'll call a friend to see if that's the right name.

My guess is your only going to do around a ten minute test or less than that.

An hour of transfer time or at least two.  Just wondering how many DVX user's out there would chip in so all of us could get a copy of the footage for those of us who live in no man's land and can't get to a screening.

But we'd get a good idea from the DVD.

Re: Panny's HDV Camera?

looks like more than a mockup now....i will still get the DVX now, because SD will be around for a while still.....but in a year we will all drool over these P2 cams...

Re: Panny's HDV Camera?

Transferring the film footage back to DVD isn't the point, and I don't think it'd be very instructive. The point is to see what the cameras look like when transferred to film and projected in a theater. The transfer print will be available to anyone who wants a copy, or who wants to arrange a screening in DVFILM's theater down in L.A. I don't know what they might charge for a copy.

As for the footage, we're looking at putting together a DVD that would have the raw footage from the cameras that are used in the comparison, so people would have the ability to directly examine the original footage and come to their own conclusions. Sort of a "2005 Camcorder Buyer's Guide" or something like that.

Re: Panny's HDV Camera?

Have to agree the new HD cams are really coming out pretty fast. P2 cards are quite expensive, right?
