panny tapes in a xl1?

I've been using Panasonic AY-DVM63PQ on an XL2 without any problems at all. I've also used cheaper Panasonic tapes in the past but I never switch brands. My understanding is that it is changing between wet lube and dry lube tapes that gives you problems, so I suppose the answer to your question depends on what tapes you have been using up till now. For example, if you're using Sony, then I wouldn't switch to Panny tapes now.

ive been using maxwell tapes so far another question can help out with the manual settings for the cam as far as white balancing and such i havent used an xl in such a long time i for got how to do it. i saw on the cam where you do it and i pushed the button and turned the knob but the screen never said anything?

You turn the WB selector to the manual preset that you want to use, point the cam at a white card or something whiteish/greyish in the scene and then push the WB button next to the selector. You should see a flashing icon in the VF that stops flashing when the WB is set. If it doesn't stop flashing, there's probably not enough light, so try it again with the iris open and the gain turned up. Don't forget to turn down the gain when you're done of course.

i did push the button but what about the push out knob/stick that goes in and out and turns where should that be set?

That's the WB selector I mentioned. There are some camera presets with icons(e.g. sunny) and some user presets with numbers (1 to 3). Select one of the user presets and then do the WB.
