Panavision running scared from the 5DII

Here's a Philip Bloom Tweet: Panavision are actually melting their EOS mount adaptors for their lenses in a crazy move! Welcome 3rd party manufacturers!

They speculate that panavision is doing this to protect their Genesis. No longer can you mount a Panavision lens to a 5DII, 7D or 1DIV. Rodney Charters is steamed.

I imagine Shane Hurlbut is pissed as well.

Comment from Shane on his Blog: I have stopped using all Canon lenses because I feel that they are too soft when it comes to projecting the image on a 60 foot screen, this is why the Panavision Primos primes are my go to lenses of choice.

Anyway, it seems that the HDSLRS from Canon are perceived as a threat by Panavision as more DPs in the industry choose the 5DII over the Genesis. Ya just gotta love it.

Panavision needs to be more worried about the new Arri cameras than the 5D/7D. And in any event, I am sure Cooke and Zeiss will be more than happy to oblige.

Excuse me, but who's choosing the 5D over the Genesis? The only reason why any professional DP would do that would be the same sort of reason why the Crank 2 guys chose the XH-A1 and HF10 for everything for their $20M Hollywood production.

This guy sums it up best:
It's better than the Red, it's actually better than the Panavision Genesis, Panavision is now melting down all their EOS adapters because people are using the 5D instead of the Genesis! (do we have an eye-rolling smilie here?)

I like my 7D. I think it's genius. I think it's $1700. It's priced right. But better than a Red? Come on. It's not even sharper than an HMC40, a $1995 1/4" video camera!

But the 7D is becoming something of a "new DVX" -- it's becoming the go-to camera for the low-cost cinema shooter. Your attitude about it is exactly the right one, I think -- it does what it does, you like what it does, you use it.

But -- it ain't better than a Red or a Panavision Genesis. I can't wait for someone to do a "shootout" against an F35 and claim that the 7D is "better" than the F35... sigh.

...

I just don't understand why it can't stay amazing for what it is, and instead it has to become "better than a Red" or "Panavision is running scared" or whatever...

You know...one could go back and forth about "this cam is better than that cam" all day long....what's the use? The fact is the 5Dll/7D is better than the Red/Genesis/F23 etc. to the individual who thinks so. Why do folks get so up in arms about what others think? Seems like the way a lot of folks respond to individuals who think that way are themselves threatened. Don't dismiss that fact....because, according to this thread, even corporations like Panavision are feeling the heat.

Thanks to other recent threads the truth is plastered out there...but even then that's still not going to change the minds of those who believe what they want to believe. The Canons are better for them so there's is no sense in anyone getting frustrated over nonsense.

I don't think that the question here should be which camera is better. What is the question is WTF kind of crazy business decision is Panavision doing here? If they think that by melting down their lens adaptors, they will rent more Genesis cameras is crazy. These V-DSLRs are here to stay. Why would they want to lose money on renting lenses for them? There is going to be more and more of a demand for serious lenses, as these types of cameras become more and more available. It just looks to me that they are being short sited and throwing away a viable business opportunity. They ought to be marketing their lens rentals to the growing crop of V-DSLR filmmakers. It doesn't make sense.

No reason for panavision to "melt" their current adapters. 1) The Genisis is not at put at any major risk by Canons DSLR's In fact I would bet that the Genisis is a busy camera and most of their stock is out on rental frequently 2) Panavision's business model is all about Rentals- why stop your glass from going out? Glass+Support for DSLR's = Money- if you can afford to rent Panavision glass, your probably not just using DSLR's for video, your supplimenting your A-cam footage (probably 35mm or the Genisis with PV lenses to match) Finally, 3) I personaly know many Dp's who have their own PV->EOS adapters- so destroying your current supply of mount adapters isnt going to do them any good!

This has to be misinformation/gossip- Sorry Phil. :bath:

Rodney Charters says his 24 rep has also confirmed this. Here is basically the Tweet exchange between Laforet and Rodney Charters

Vincent Laforet -In what I think is an obtuse move: Panavision is melting their EOS mount adapters for their lenses... bye bye Primos.. :(

They think it's a conflict of interest - but I say otherwise... I know they're working on their own camera - but it's what? 3-4 years away?!

Rodney Charters-Panavision is melting their EOS mount adapters for their lenses... bye bye Primos.. :( Our 24 rep also confirmed this

So the shift to the ultimate glass Zeiss Master Primes begins with bunch of modified 1DMkIV bodies and PL mounts

And for those of us who still prefer Primo Glass there are plenty of CNC machines happy to make EOS to PV adapters they will not go away

In Memory feel free to spread these once in a lifetime images to posters http://twitpic.com/q7faq

I agree... I don't care about the Genesis and would probably refuse it if I ever had the opportunity. The DSLRs make the most sense to me for the moment. But the problem is that some people continue to hype the DSLRs as something that they're not, and the post that started this thread is an example. And that's hype on top of either misinformation, disinformation, or dubious statements.

People are free to believe whatever they want. But the problem is when they extend the reality distortion field to influence other people. As Barry keeps saying, the cameras are brilliant as long as one understands and accept their shortcomings and limitations. What sort of inflated expectations will someone have if he/she hears or reads the equivocal claim that DPs are choosing a DSLR in situations in which they would've previously chosen the Genesis? Doesn't that give the false impression that a DSLR would actually be better than a Genesis in situations other than very rare and extreme cases (i.e. something like Crank 2)?

Now that's a recipe for disaster...

A lot of rental houses don't want to rent out to just the lens packages, they want to rent out the whole kit. Makes sense. If they let the lenses go out on their own it ties up their whole stock of cameras without actually renting them out.

Exactly, you sound like just the right person that has more experience than DPs like Rodney Charters and Shane Hurlbut (One of the main 5D cheer leaders) that is hyping the 5DII to use in professional productions. Would you please show him a Zone Plate and tell him to stop spreading this BS. I mean who cares if experienced DPs like Shane Hurlbut are blown away when 7D/5D footage is projected on a 60 foot screen. I mean, really, what do they know? Have they seen the latest 7D zone plate at the Red website? Does he even realize he shouldn't be using this camera?

And Rodney Charters spreading that disinformation at the collision conference by projecting the 5DII and 35mm film side by side showing how similar they are when projected. Really, the nerve of that guy. Just who the hell does he think he is? Doesn't he realize someone could buy this camera and think they could also make movies and then be disappointed.

Hmmm...I wonder if any DSLR owner has looked at the work of a Ansel Adams, Maplethorp etc and bought a camera and was then disappointed that it didn't produce similar results.

Maybe the next season of 24 isn't on a 5d but there is a ton of sh*t that is (the only way one wouldn't know that is if they only visited this board). And I can tell HVX adapter footage from a 5d or the Red any day. But I agree Panavision scared of an SLR is kind of retarded.

No, not on vimeo...I should have clarified that. I just intercut an HVX/Letus and 5d footage. I don't miss that combo at all(not that it looks bad). I think RED footage looks fabulous and can tell the difference between it and the 5d easily as well. I think way too much credence is given to viewing footage on Vimeo.

Still doesnt make sense to me- the Dp's I know who are into this Dslr thing HAVE the PV-EOS mount adapter already and Im sure Panavision wont turn down a rental on a set of lenses (being that they are available). Hopefully Im not wrong as it would be a very poor choice on PV's part- I mean is Panavision still owned by interscope records!?
