GH13 Panasonic VS Canon, Mac VS PC Win 7 - the ridiculous war / herd mentality

Blackout

Veteran
It's never ending. Which is best which is best which is best. I almost quit a project today because the client insisted that I must not know my sh!t because I am using Windows 7 when "EVERYONE KNOWS MACS ARE BETTER FOR VIDEO."

This same client LOVES the videos I created for her on Win 7 that are now getting airplay. Anyway we REALLY got into it.... her last videos were all done by canon 7d / mac final cut HERD mentality (sorry for the typos in the title) and I was about to walk off set and say go get your old crew then and shoot with them, I don't need this crapola.

It made me reflect though.

This is a bit of a long rant....so, watch if ya got some time and have felt this BS vibe before:

"The MAC is the only computer. The MAC is the computer of God!" A classic, I really enjoyed watching this. If you can't spare 28 minutes, go from about 20 minutes in to get the gist.

Uh, this video is very poor quality, you made it on a mac i suppose !
I appreciate your job ! LiV & Monsta Villa clip is very, very nice. it's a Hollywood level !

Great stuff!

One thing though - we all use Software to do our work. This is independent of the type of computer. The operating system does not have too much to do with how the programs work or how they are designed. It is different with Apple because they make Final Cut Pro, so it gets associated with MAC computers. For example - you can run Adobe Premiere on a MAC and a PC. The same exact tools on both systems. I notice MAC has a unified/bundled approach where with PC you need to get buy all of the separate programs to use (NLE, audio, compositor...)

I use PC just because I have been building them for 10 years and can build one for a lot less and also make sure it has horsepower. The programs have caught up on the PC side to reach the same level of creativity & production compared to MACs. Anything beyond this is just a personal issue.

Blackout. I almost got freaked out for a sec, because i thought you were reading my mind...lol I completely agree with you.

I use pc, and i have for years mostly gaming. In the last two years i have picked up video as a hooby, I'm trying to get serious with it, and now it's all i want to do.

I use a GH2 and adobe software. I'm having trouble getting the colors that i am looking for in my paintball tournament videos. Another person doing the samething as i is getting these beautiful colors. He obviously knows what he is doing, and i do not. The only difference in our equipment is that he uses a canon 550, and he is on mac.
I posted the problem i'm having on the GH2 forum on vimeo. The response i got was "dump the pc, get a mac with FC pro X then your stuff will look good." This did not make much sense to me since i have heard everyone has jumped ship from FC x and switched premiere pro cs5.5. (which i use) I also know know that my pc will out perform every mac i have seen.

I think apple/canon users find what works for them and is easy to use, and don't look at anything else. If something works for you, go for it, but they shouldnt down everything else.

"The MAC is the only computer. The MAC is the computer of God!"

is equivalent to this sheer nonsense:

"The PC is the only computer. The PC is the computer of God!""

This kind of claims is either a sarcasm or a showoff of pure ignorance and arrogance. No computer engineers, scientists or anyone with sufficient knowledge in computer science and engineering could ever agree.

In terms of computer engineering, in reality, Apple's entire computer product lines are no more than a special brand of Personal Computers (a.k.a., PCs). Most PC makers such as Dell, HP, and Toshiba, like to use compatible components to make their own PCs (so that buyers can easily add 3rd-party components), whereas Apple likes to use proprietary components to make its own PCs. Typically, it's much more difficult to find 3rd-party components for repairing a broken Mac.

That is about the only major difference between a Mac PC and most other non-Mac PCs.

For PC shoppers, given any Mac PC, you can always find many non-Mac PCs that are either cheaper or even more expensive, either worse or much better (for certain purposes) than the Mac in question.

GrrrrrrGG!
That type of client makes me so mad!

One of the only statements that I've found to work on those boneheads is: "I work in Adobe Premiere Pro, and it runs on both platforms just the same."
They seem to have a harder time arguing with that.

Thanks for the support., and there are PLENTY of color correction plugins and tools available for Win 7 and many in real time unlike final cut. I'm not a big fan of premiere I use Sony Vegas and Edius 6 but everey once in a while I use premiere.. it's too clunky and counter intuitive for me.

I do a LOT of work in Edius 6, and that WON'T run on a mac! Have macs even finally gotten avchd working right, cause it wasn't on this one.

PC... Mac... What's the difference? As far as I'm concerned they are all still slow and stupid. Getting better though.

My wife uses a Mac, I use PC's. We both work cross platform and both have their advantages and drawbacks.

I don't particularly like the way Apple tends to force you into their working paradigms. It can seem a bit restrictive and dictatorial at times, but for many it seems to work well.

This link cracked me up.

Been down the mac road, was not happy at all. I caved and bought into the hype, now I have two Mac G5's holding the garage floor down. (those things are heavy) But yeah until I see a radical difference in the final product, I'll stick with PC. By the way, Macs are fine, its just been my experience with them.

Really I would not want to work for a client that has no idea what they are talking about, but absolutely knows better than you about your profession. I went thru that when I was a carpenter for years doing custom hardwood floors. I threw some terms at them, explained a couple scenarios that related to their topic, and they eventually shut the hell up about it.

It could be that they have this power hungry personality, and don't realize nobody's listening?

I built a PC, a monster PC at that, for video editing, and I use OS X running Lion on it with no issues whatsoever. For the price of a crappy iMac, I got an 8 core i7 processor (the fastest Intel make) 16GB of ram, 4TB of RAID drives, an SSD drive for my OS and apps, etc. etc. I could run Windows 7 on it of course, but I have always used Mac, and can't see the point in switching.

Highly recommended:

Well, you know "clients"; at certain times of the month they say you have no credibility because of your computing platform - but what they really mean is that it's a certain time of the month and they're having to go out in public with you while you're wearing those shoes.

And c'mon, dude, My God - those shoes!

At which point the only recourse is to all hug and then suddenly burst into rampant '80s big band singalong:

"Heard mentality"? Spelling aside, I also tire of the Mac vs. Non-Mac, Canon 5d vs. Any-Other-Camera-That-Costs-Half-As-Much-And-Shoots-Video-That-Is-Twice-As-Good debates. People mistakenly believe that by merely purchasing an expensive "hip" camera, or pretty computer and swallowing all the marketing hype that comes with them that they have somehow attained an elevated status as a result. No amount of proof to the contrary will derail this flawed way of thinking and it is seriously a waste of time and energy to even attempt to do so.

I have both, I have a 27" IMAC, And a new Asus G-74 running windows 7 64 bit, cs5.5. Put it this way, the mac is covered in dust. I dont even use it.

Mac's were always better than PC's but I've never bought one....why? The cheapest mac is the mac mini and it comes with nothing, just the box. For $200 less than the Mini, I can get a full PC system with monitor and maybe even printer. PC's are "good enough" and are superior in value for money.

Canon's were best, until the GH1 hack. I ordered a body only T3i but it wasn't in stock and watching that $800 charge waiting to be posted...after two days, I got cold feet and canceled it. Glad I did because a few days later I saw the Gh1 on sale for $350...even unhackable and with it's problems, I knew that was a way better value for money. Then when the new hack came out, no brainer, it became a steal.

For me it's about value for money. And even if something is worse...is it good enough for the money. I'll gladly pay half as much for something 80% as good.

I can only put it this way, for those who joined video editing yesterday the pc is comparable to the mac, but for those who have been in this for years all know the truth. I was forced to abandon the hobby until i could afford a mac years later. Since i moved to mac my basement is clean, i no longer see the extras of everything(memory, graphic cards, soundcards etc.) all over and never opened the mac, why should i ?, i want to edit my videos not maintaining and modifying the machine. Oh and in those years, although i had a pc dedicated to video, the pc would crush in almost every edit, i hear it no longer does that, but i have moved. For the first time i hear there is a decent working pc and hurra a demand for a rematch.

I do this as well. I needed to save a little money... got a quad-core i5 with Lion. It's awesome... I use it more than I use my 8 core, Mac Pro at work.
