These barely graded, handheld, unlit, shallow depth of field samples make it really hard to judge anything much from the images. Noise looks atrocious in that longer nightime sample - but since it's unlit and barely graded, it's hard to make a call one way or the other.

If the exposure was so far down into the noise floor, that grading the blacks down would erase all shadow detail... well that's on the exposure choices, not the camera.

I really need to arrange a playdate with the Varicam to see what it can really do.

Seeing as you are in Melbourne, can I tag along?
Pretty please?

I have some night exterior stuff that I'm very pleased with. I found 5000 (at a 4/5.6) to be about 2/3 of a stop brighter than I liked, but bringing it down in the grade cleaned up noise in the toe and looked great. Theoretically I could have dialed the camera down to 3200 or 2500 and achieved something similar, but it's nice to have a "thick negative".

If I can tee something up, sure - many hands might light work!

Good to hear Charles (and what I'd expect to be honest). How are you finding the colours from the camera?

I'm happy with what I've seen so far. I start a series with it on Monday so I'm sure I'll have more notes as things come along. Did a 3 camera shoot last weekend and everything seemed to match well, and look good. BTW I am only using the V35 in testing and on the shows, the LT's aren't getting delivered in time.

As you have a ton of experience with the Alexa, Charles, I'm looking forward to hearing your feedback on the Panasonics.

Not much to see really. So far the Varicam has not impressed me at all.

I've felt the same with a lot of the recent "test" footage. Just a lot of waving it around with no lighting or control. Do we really need another street light scene? How about a nicely scene to see what it does under real production conditions. I just look back to the V35 footage floating around from shows like Master of None and hope that the LT delivers in the hands of an experienced DOP who pulls out lights and knows how to expose correctly.

That said I've got one on order that should be in my hands in the next 2 weeks. Obviously I don't put much weight in most of these early reviews.

It's just hard to tell anything from ungraded and unlit work. Especially the ungraded part.

Unbenounced, (that's a word, right?) to me, quite a few of my shots wound up in the ISO 5000 demo.
I recognized a lot of that footage, the newer stuff looked very nice.

For those who care, my shots were split between a Duclos/Tokina 11-16 and the gorgeous 50mm Leica Sumicron-C.

It's 'unbeknownst', but maybe more common 'unbeknown' (kindly wanted to mention only because you asked)...footage looks sweet!
