"Mobile cinema acquisition is about to change… forever."

Yeah... hoping it's a FS7 competitor. Perhaps the P2/AVC-Intra DVX200 with removable lens a lot of folks wanted?

"Mobile" and the photo have me thinking Alexa Mini/Red form factor. I'm with Harddrive on this, I think it's an all in one capturing/recording solution. Alexa had the Alexa M, but now they have the Mini. Panasonic had the same idea with the Varicam 35/HS and a separate recorder. But I think now they're pushing a small, gimbal/drone friendly solution.

Since we're playing the guessing game, put me down for an Alexa 65 competitor. Though I'm probably way off the mark. But I'll take the long shot since there is no money down.

Does the Varicam have any bugs? Apart from the mass and the pricetag it seems highly capable from my limited knowledge.

Doesn't seem like the Varicam 35/HS did so well, anyone shooting with it? Hopefully Panasonic is taking the 35 sensor and putting it in a smaller lighter weight body. Problem is the 35 already has trouble competing with the industry standards on specs at $55k so even if they cannibalize their own camera by releasing a new one in a smaller cheaper package it will still be sort of a tough sell to most. Perhaps they could compete with RED/Arri/Sony if it's 4k@120fps S35 in an F55 or alexa-mini sized package for <$20k but that's a very tough market so if they could get a contender in the now huge $8-16k market that would really give them a fighting chance, but it also might alienate their few Varicam35 users...

It is a tough marketplace in the higher end side of things, especially when you are late to the party. Alexa seems to be loved by all so to come in and try to change what already works is a tough sell. All you are left with is any brand loyalty and competing on price.

Looks like Panasonic will need to bite some bullets at all pricepoints if they want to come in and compete in the cinema space. They chose an orphaned format in m4/3rds for their lower end, they don't have a mid and mid-high product and their high end is very pricey. We have all solved it for them over the years but they don't seem to listen to us...:)

i was watching some footage of the Varicam35 and some from the Alexa. Due to how many movies are shot on the Alexa, my brain immediately associated the Alexa footage with "movie". The Alexa footage was nothing great either, just relatively average shotsgrabbed in a city in an afternoon. Meanwhile, the Panny footage was all lit up, multiple locations, helicopters, the works, and it felt like the old HDTV demo videos from 2009. It had a nice look, actually, but is a look its own, and since that doesn't look like a movie yet, it is not exactly good.

We solved it back in 2010. 6years ago. I think RND could've figure out something better than ML by now. ;)

Personally, I would love to see a more moderately priced flavor of the Varicam. I shot Panny for years in the beginning....but really have gotten away from them as a company over the last 8-9 years.. I would love to see them step it up and offer some real innovation at a solid price point. I know they have the tech....just a question if they can get it at a price point that offers it to the masses.

Exciting for sure.
