what's the wager some good german beer?

The only thing stopping me from running out and getting one of these is testing it's low light performance compared to the D90 and the announcement of the D400 specs. The crop factor and 17Mbps bit-rate are a bit of a drag but life is too short to lose sleep over it. Everything else sounds good.

No, only 5 euro. - I worked a lot of years in the advertising business. And what seems funny to me: you don´t find any official remark about manual control for iso - only shutter speed and aperture. So, manual iso is a good sales argument. Why the hell they don´t mention it. But maybe I´m off base.

Sure, it could be a good one. Especially when Nikon fails with a D400 or D800. I´m curious about it.

heh, could be the only one for a while. lens compatibility makes it easy to go back to Nikon when they get their **** sorted.

I asked a member of the dpreview panasonic forum to take some pictures with his G1 in low light, so I could to try to determine the light sensitivity on the GH1 in video mode.

These shots were taken with a 85mm 1.2L with a shutter of 1/60 at

f1.2 iso 400, 800, 1600 and 3200
f2.0 iso 400, 800, 1600 and 3200
f2.8 iso 400, 800, 1600 and 3200

and then just resized to 1920x1080.

Note that the GH1 will have better low light capabilities than the G1 and Panasonic has been working on a better noise reduction system for video mode. If the rumor is true that the lowest shutter is 1/60, the PAL version will have 1/50 shutter and that should increase the low light ability a bit more.

One thing I'm not certain about is how the AVCHD compression will affect low light capabilities, and how the downscaling of the 12mp to 1920x1080.

Here is the link to the images.

It's a press conference, and the speaker looked dead serious from the get-go, so I am not sure what you were expecting.

i hope it really is something delivered from the gods. At least panasonic are touting the video mode as a major feature unlike Nikon and Canon who have made it just an add on.

that low light doesn't look so promising, considering those are at f stops that the stock lens is incapable of delivering.

i agree, especially that it seems to lose saturation at higher iso's, which is the opposite of what makes the d90 so good in low light. it gets noisier and noisier, but the colors remain.

Im sorry I wasn't more specific. After the extravagant video presentation with models combining a camcorder with a still camera in a box- set to techno music. I was expecting some sort of audience reaction after that. Its about 2 minutes into the video when that starts.

We shouldn't expect the low-light capabilities of the GH-1 to be as good as the 5DMkII or even the D90, however at the same time it should still do a relatively good job in low-light.

If we use the G1 as a barometer, we should expect minimal noise up to ISO1250. With noise increasing dramatically at ISO1600 and ISO3200 being reserved only for emergencies. Sensor to sensor, the GH-1 won't give nearly the impressive low-light capabilities of the 5DII, but the added manual features and flexibility should give a lot more control and ultimately may produce better results based on the user's skill and intuitiveness.

There are also pixel binning techniques that could be used to lower noise at high ISO as the sensor is capturing video. So the G1's still photography ISO performance may not exactly be the right tool to measure low-light capabilities of video. Since the GH-1 is going to be released in Japan this week we should start seeing some examples real soon.

Just wanted to share this lens I found, the Olympus E 25mm f/2.8 Zuiko Lens

Maybe people already knew about it. Why I'd buy it:

  • F/2.8
  • 50mm equivalent.
  • It can focus to 13cm from front of lens.
  • Affordable under $300
Not sure if it could autofocus on the micro 4/3 GH1. Anyone know?

Edit: I did a little research and found this article about a collaborative firmware update to make Sigma, Olympus and Panasonic lenses cross-compatible with the camera bodies.

Yes, that lens will have full AF on the the GH1 using the Panasonic DMW-MA1 4/3 lens adapter.

Another lens to consider is the Leica Summilux 25mm f/1.4. Its a 4/3rds lens which will also have autofocus capabilities on the GH-1.

However it's not a pancake lens and it costs around $750.

Do you know something we don't or are you just speculating? From what I've read the G1 sensor has been redesigned for the GH1

If you check the specs for the Panasonic HDC-HS300K, the GH1 is sort of a combination of that and a G1. Thats why the two models presentation there. I feel the image is gonna be quite good.
