Panasonic unveiled G1-HD...

A long time ago i didn't want to get rid of my d90 and it hadn't paid for itself either. Being first has its advantages but it never lasts, for obvious reasons. :-)

Pappas,

Please tell me you remember the ugly-ass showfloor footage that came off of the 5D? Horrible colors, low compression...

It wasn't until users got their hands on it that it showed the proper potential. I thought people would have learned to stop judging things on showfloor footage by now.

it wasn't until Laforte's footage that people started caring about the MK2. Hopefully panny themselves will release some actual footage that isn't compressed for the web.

ha saw that coming long time ago
The D90 has been fun to play with. I've shot a music video with it which I think it is very good for. But as for my feature there are better options on the horizon. I've become quite attached to the little bugger though.

Ha...Amen to that.

My D90 paid for itself with still photography long time ago. But, knowing that some will say I am repeating myself, pro video with it, forget it.

Ho-kay...

So, basically, it seems after reading all of your responses, there's about a 35% chance that the G1 will deliver images as crystal as the 5D.

Shouldn't Canon be releasing a new camera at the same time, though? I mean, isn't that how these things work? It is such a shame that Canon does seem to be "protecting" a lot of its prosumer camcorders by not going 24fps...

Honestly, though, thank goodness for the Red (and upcoming Scarlet). If not for a start-up company unassociated with the giant brand cameras, we'd still be stuck in the dark ages.

My perfect scenario set-up would be a 5DII camera-style with 24fps, and the Scarlet with 35mm interchangeables. Living in a large city (Chicago), you simply can't go around getting coverage with a any size "video" camera. People react differently when they see a still camera. It's like, "Oh, they're trying to take a picture, let me get out of the way and not look at the lense". Whereas with a video camera everyone is always stretching their over-curious necks to get in the shot. The blending of 5D-style footage at 24fps along with Scarlet will probably be the wave of most city-faring indy filmmakers. IMO

The D90 never recorded in a way that could complete.

You pic the G1, click for 1920x1080s

When has panasonic failed to deliver? Didn't they bring out 3 versions of the DVX in response to user feedback? Everything bar the 17mbps rather than 24mbps looks good on paper. At least panasonic have a clue about 24p and it's market unlike Nikon who appear to be totally clueless or just not interested.

The good thing is the HDSLR is just the 'brain' and it can be easily lobotomised

I hate to be pessimistic, but I can't see Panasonic pulling out a 1500 Dollar camera that would obliterate its consumer and professional video division cameras.

I hope I'm wrong, but here's what I think will happen with this camera:

1- Skew, rolling shutter issues
2- Sub par AVCHD encoding- the picture quality will look worse than the HMC150. or HPX170 and, obviously, HPX300.
3- Worse color rendition, Dinamic Range should be bellow HPX300.

What it WILL have:

1- DOF control (interchangeable lenses on a big sensor)
2- Better low light performance than the video cams.

These are my expectations, at least.
Panasonic will only "up" their game when the competition takes that step- when they see that that's the only way to stay competitive.

Canon 5D Mark2's main competition should be a Nikon, or even a new generation Canon XL camera. I hope Canon really does make the jump and creates this video camera with their 35mm still lenses. That would be it.

I think exactly the same. The GH1 will be a nice camera, no doubt about it, but it´s too small and therefore not very handy and 17mbps is not enough for real good image quality like the 5DII. The zoom-lens with a f-stop of 4.0 is a joke and the lowlight capabilities gonna not be by far as good as the 5DII with a FF-Sensor. If one use i.e. Nikon lenses you´ll lose the advantage of AF.

And, keep in mind, Nikon has up to now no direct competitor for the 5DII on the market. It´ll coming out this year with a good video feature - let´s call it D800. The price range of that camera can not be much higher than the 5DII - nobody would buy it. And one thing is for sure, they have learned a lot from the mistakes with the D90. So, the video mode gotta be much better than the D90 and at least as good as the 5DII, possibly even better... haha and if i´m wrong i´ve to pay 5 euro ......

There will always be wankers who will piss away good money on high end toys just so they can say "i'm a pro". While the rest of us creative types will get good work done with something held together with a bit of gaff.

In psychology this is called "projection". You seem to be a kinda difficult person. But in every forum one can find somebody like you... ;-).
BTW: When actually you´re sleeping - you are sitting from morning to evening (european time) in front of your Monitor. Then it is night in Australia - or where is "your Sydney"? :-)

Ok - back to topic. Obyiously the GH1 will have a lot of friends. And not only in the amateur-market. But as I said before, I´m pretty sure that the purchase intentions will change quite extremely when the new Nikons gonna be announced...

Matt, looking forward to seeing some screen grabs from footage or some behind the scenes stills from this feature, and so is my friend ;) (and his friend too).

In Australia it's called "talking ****" Na mate Matt's the difficult person, I don't think he gets enough vitamin D up there in Sweden.

I have two baby girls.......I don't sleep. I was up all night trying to cut a D90 clip and trying to buy some lenses on ebay. I got a 24mm because Matt thinks I need it. He better be right! Now I have 7 Nikon primes.....I think I need to do a cull. Lenses seem to be more expensive in the EU is that right?

The great thing about the GH1 is that nikon primes will fit with an adapter. So we can throw away our D90's and get a GH1, toss the GH1 and get the D800 if it's worth it. I'd really like a full frame HDSLR for around $3000 US.
