Panasonic S1H Announcement Tuesday, August 27th

For feature work, or anything narrative for that matter FF still presents one fundamental problem and that's one of focus...the cost of shooting at FF level DOF, is simply not practical and the artistic choice to use shallow DOF to emphasize certain scenes dissapears when everything is razor thin.

Raise the FF ISO by 1 F-stop and close down your aperture by 1 F-stop and now you have the SAME DOF as Super35. Given how clean the FF image is, raising the ISO by 1 F-stop should produce an image that is as clean as Super35.

Except what will i do without chromatic aberation if i have to stop down?

Sigma will introduce a new line of Cokebottleagon cine lenses that will be uber expensive but they will deliver an organic Charlie Chaplin 1914 lens experience. Your mind, your eyeballs, and your wallet will be blown...

Mind melted

Cool features:

- simultaneous internal wxternal recording
- dual native iso
- free angle swivel lcd, that doesn’t hit the hdmi cable
- ibis (though i dislike it)
- no recording limit
- varicam look profile
- freeze dust rain resistant
- properly cooled for long recording
- all the anamorphic desqueeze flavors
- oh, yeah, 10bit

And a few other neat things.

What’s nice about the dual native iso, is that they are both relatively low. 100 and 640 for one of the color profile settings. Something else for cone like and v log.

Actually, Medium Format film was dominant from the early 1950's until the digital age with CinemaScope, Panavision and Todd AO systems. Full Frame/Vista Vision was Paramount's way to up the size without having to change the entire theater projection infrastructure.

In stills, Medium Format also dominated the pro ranks with Rolleiflex, with its various iterations, Hasselblad and others. The tippy top like Ansel Adams often shot on Large Format too.

35mm was the consumer format and, with the continuous advancement in chemistry, became more than adequate for the home use.

Digital had to start at the bottom with much smaller size sensors and has been working its way up ever since. ARRI Alexa 65 is the current price/performance king but, with a lot of old 65mm-70mm Panavision and the stills (Mamiya, Hasselblad, Pentax) glass laying around, one has to assume that 8K Medium Format cameras for the big budget productions are just around the corner from all the major manufacturers.

And 8K FF will have to be enough for the ordinary folks.

Definitely feels like an above and beyond spec’d camera.

I got to mess around with one, not realizing it hadn’t been released yet. Lol

Felt pro.

I liked the evf and the vents for cooling, so i took some pics. The grip felt solid, but the whole camera was compact.

Cool, James - I was wondering how it felt in the hand and if the added thickness would be awkwardly bulky. Nice to hear it feels good and compact when gripping.

Pretty light on info overall. Dual ISO was a welcome surprise. Most all else we already knew from leaks.

A few questions I suppose will need to wait for hands on, that is, how did they improve the software? Synchro Scan/Shutter Angle/WFM?

Sounds like they've made some VFR improvements, but it's not FULL featured. At least there are controls now while shooting HFR, as well as a 48fps options in 4K.

Lots of focus on anamorphic, but no personal interest here really.

10-bit 4K60p is 420 as mentioned - matches the EVA1. Was hoping for 422 but also not surprised to not see it exceed what the EVA1 does. I'll take it.

Back to Dual SD card slots - cool. Never wanted that Sony XQD slot, really, so I like this.

Did they finalize a launch date? I skimmed the presentation, it was too painful to watch all 60 minutes lol.

Pansonic has confirmed to Newsshooter that they are working with Atomos to deliver ProRes RAW via HDMI to an Atomos recorder.

Surprised they didn't announce that on stage (unless I missed it).

Screenshots all show shutter in non-degrees, sigh. Wonder why they didn't enable shutter angle in software like GHx line?? Hopefully a temporary oversight - they don't seem like they're trying to pull any punches here, so can't imagine how this slipped through.

Right, lol. I may be misremembering, but doesn't the GH series give the option of using either shutter angle or speed? Maybe it is the same way for the S1H. Does the S1 have this option?
