Panasonic S1 2.0 is out

Just updated mine! Pretty significant upgrade, of course it makes sense with the release of the S5.

If anyone's interested in a DP Review interview with a Panasonic's head of imaging division.

Snip:

Are you working on improving DFD to make it more competitive with phase-detection AF from other brands?

Autofocus is a technology that is constantly advancing. With the recently released Lumix DC-S5, we have evolved the DFD algorithm based on the needs and feedback of creators, and we have received a positive response from the market following the release. However, we recognize that there are still issues that need to be improved to reach perfection when it comes to AF. We are currently considering further improvements, such as improving the processing capacity with new hardware and improving the accuracy with new software algorithms. Please look forward to the evolution of our AF in the future.

I just said something about their AF in another thread...

Not sure if the above is word-for-word, but "our AF" is a worthy observation, ha. (I know what he meant.)

But seriously...been 6 years since the 1DX Mark II and they are still working on this.

The cartel strikes again... If Panasonic had the best AF along with the rest of the features in their cameras it would not be fair to the other players. From the reviews I have watched, the S-series AF is really not that bad for video use. It lacks for sports still shooting, but for normal video work it seems fine. I probably would never run an interview with AF or do a walk & talk at f1.4, so maybe my needs are more pedestrian. Will it lose its mind during some routine gimbal use? That is more important to me.

I remember years ago, Chris Matthews kept ragging on Larry King. "This guy never asks a follow up question". Well, hardball tactics indeed wasn't Larry's style because the celebrities won't come on your show for a hardball. The same goes for every celebrity talk show host, aside of Leno's "What the hell were you thinking?" to Hugh Grant. Likewise, photo/video sites that are interested in moving merchandise by affiliating with major retailers don't want to be too hard on their "celebrity guests". I might have asked, "Why did you decide to disable the phase detect AF on the same sensor that Sony has on A7III?". Which might explain why I don't sell as much gear as the DPR, the Camera Store or Tony and Chelsea Northrup.

"The DPR interviewer didn't know this", you say? No, of course, not.

Last up is the IMX410CQX, a 24MP backside-illuminated (BSI) sensor that looks very similar to the sensors we've already seen inside the Sony A7 III, Panasonic Lumix DC-S1, Nikon Z6 and Sigma fp cameras.

Great update makes this camera even better value for money.
Does every thread about a Panasonic camera really have to turn into being about AF, seems like an obsession around here? Am pretty sure most Panasonic users are aware of its AF fragility and yet they still find the camera useful - be good to talk about the positives this firmware brings as it gives the S1 5.9K and 4K/60p in 10bit, also anamorphic 4:3 12bit RAW up to 5.9K using HDMI, pretty much an S1H with a few time limitations. Am tempted to get one to go alongside my Fuji

as we now have timecode, can anyone tell me where to buy a cable for that or for what to search: xx to bnc cable...
Thanks!
Also is the timecode of the s1(h) pretty stable for a day like a tentacle or zoom f6?

If this is addressed toward me, then my reply would be that it's not about the AF per se but about the intentional product crippling that leaves the consumers with inferior product at inflated prices and the supposed "gatekeeping" media intentionally avoiding asking the potentially embarrassing questions. One can toss in a squeaky wheel principle on top of that - if you don't raise just a little stink, the photo-video cartel will continue its operations as usual.

PS. In the US, cartels and monopolies are illegal (though OPEC+ is rarely criticized), much like in Europe. In Japan and Korea, the gigantic domestic vertically integrated corporations are considered a matter of national pride.

S1 runs timecode internally but can’t sync with a jamming device - only S1H

Assuming it is like the S1H, the timecode I/O uses the flash sync connector.

Here is the BNC cable that Panasonic ships with the S1H and GH5S:

Tentacle Sync also makes a flash sync to 3.5mm cable if you are looking to connect to their devices:

Not specifically you was more a general comment but there seems to be a few who bring it up in every Panasonic thread as though it's breaking news nobody knew about, yet don't seem to have any interest in the actual camera itself.
To be clear I appreciate your posts and those of the AF brigade in many other aspects of the forum, was just feeling a little cranky yesterday. I didn't down vote you by the way

No problem. I think I have a secret non-admirer, who goes around the site downvoting my posts.

PS. I felt like bringing the AF up due to it already being mentioned in the DPR interview. It was semi-Jungian.

Great update, loving how clean the 5.9k PRR is, which I was missing after I sold an Eva1. It'll be going to work immediately. Really impressed with this update and Panasonic's continuing dedication to updates. I can't believe there isn't more noise being made, launch films coming out day and date for the firmware, etc. When Sony dropped Cinetone in the A7sIII, there were 15 videos in my feed testing it, haha.

I feel like I'm going crazy sometimes, but I just can't get past the idea that the S1/S1H are best in class to this day, unless you need autofocusing 4k 120p. Otherwise, color, dr, IBIS, usability, price, resolution, etc, etc, these things are still at the front of the pack. I don't wear brand loyalty on a sleeve, I love what Sony and Blackmagic are doing, but Panasonic still feels a bit out ahead.

This phenomenon seems to happen in every gear-centric community I've paid attention to (including non camera groups). I think when you care a lot and spend a lot of money in something + invest in being part of a community, choices like camera ownership (or tent ownership in another community I visit!) become markers of identity. The buying of things is part of the hobby. And the talking about buying of things is a core part of how you connect with the community (so some base social needs).
And finally you've spent a lot of money on that identity choice, so you must justify it as much as possible by reminding yourself and others how right that choice was.

Most people on here are open to using many different cameras...some of us mainly drill the AF issue because we want them to know we know what's going on and things need to change.

Mark my words...if RED or Blackmagic were to ever have the best AF in the world, every single new Japanese camera would also have the best AF as well.

I can confidently say I used AF at a time when less than 1% of the world even knew anything about how reliable it was becoming (because you literally had to have owned the 70D or a 1DX Mark II to know, or just randomly come across the very few who would mention something about it on forums), but it's currently not even part of my camera identity and I just want better cameras for everyone.

Yeah, I think everyone (or mostly everyone) does genuinely really just care about making sure people have good information for making camera decisions. I stopped paying attention to camera chatter a few years back, and coming back into it, it's amazing how every community seems to really really talk about autofocus features (the mantra 5 or so years ago was to laugh any new camera operator who was curious about autofocus).

After many years of having it stressed that we need to be using our cameras manually for everything, it's tough to change people's views or their understanding of how technology changes and evolves.

It was only until a few years ago when it was finally accepted mostly because of YouTube and the circulation of more information and knowledge.

I sort of think that it only became reliable enough to be interesting a few years ago.

But yeah - in-camera and manual was always drilled into me. And I think that's a very healthy mindset but you dont want it to become pathological. Especially when the machine or the editor can accomplish something better/faster/cheaper

And inevitably there are articles in American cinematographer where big DPs gush about how some new tech opened doors for them like no one ever heard of it when it was recently the subject of snobbery. It happened with the Alexa LF after we heard for so long that full frame was for losers
