Panasonic requested firmware changes

I was wondering if anyone had any DESIRED firmware/software changes that they felt would make things easier/bettter?

For me,
it seems that the P2 store should be able to write as individual folders in one partition, instead of individual partitions.

Individual partitions:
1] Makes copying the files from the P2 store somewhere else, time consuming due to the fact that you have to rename the items.

It would be nice to just have all the files in one place that you can just cut and paste all the files to a larger hard drive. The partitioning, makes it so you have to do each partition, and then due to the items being the same name, they can not be pasted into one folder. You have to make new folders with different names.

The HVX200, should have a numbering sequence as a software option.
The way it would work is, when turned on, it remembers how many P2 cards you have inserted untill you reset the counter. Then it uses this numbering sequence to label the main folder of the P2 files. Even better would be the ability to include a name before the number.

This would allow one to simply cut and paste the Main folder(s) to a larger hard drive without doing the renaming personally. It would also allow one to know which project the files were a part of.

Also, I would like to request a utility built into the P2 viewer that would allow one to see the format method of any file, i.e is it a 24PA file, or a 24p file.

I don't use the P2 viewer much, so it may already be there.

Speaking of P2 viewer maybe they can build in the ability to burn DVD's from there. That would be nice. A dvd burning application is not that difficult to make.
It sure would eliminate the headache of the current ones out there that change the format of your progressive files. (I am only imagining that it would not be hard to do being that many burning applications are very inexpensive, or free).

So true. We have had to make a folder for each scene on our laptop and dump each set of files to a specific folder.

Some of my frustration could be due to being in this industry for over 25 years and now totally changing the workflow. But in all those years, I've never seen progress be so unorganized???

Any input is welcome!

how about being able to flip the LCD?

they already have a horizontal flip (the mirror flip function), why not a vertical one for use with 35mm adapters?

I agree on the file naming scheme. It seems a bit odd that my $60 cheapo digital still camera will do this, and the $6000+ HVX won't...

Small annoyance. The Menu buttons. (up, down, left, right, center) Is it me, or is it annoying to look at a menu on the flip out... and when you want to go left on the screen, you have to press the furthest button away? ("Up" from where most stand) If you are standing behind the camera like most people, the buttons should be left on the left, right on the right, etc. As it is, it's almost like up is right, down is left. So, I suggest the ability to select from two options on button mappings. For people standing on the side or behind the camera.

Yes Goonie I'm always doing that! Very annoying indeed, bring back the joystick all is forgiven! :)

My main request at this time for a firmware revision would be to allow trimming of the clips in-camera. It'd be great to be able to mark an in and out point, and have the camera trim the MXF to include just that section between the in and out points.

+1 on the Menu buttons

I also think there should be an option to change the sensitivity of the focus ring, it's too slow.

For all you 35mm adapter guys, why not have them flip the whole image in camera so you don't have to do it in post, shouldn't be any more work for the dsp than flipping the viewfinder.

I agree this should be a very eassy thing for them to do with p2

space saver?

space saver?

Barry, do you mean as a space-saving mechanism? To make room for new footage if you're not happy with part of a clip? (as opposed to deleting the whole clip)

Humm, that would be cool.
Seems kind of time consuming on a shoot though, pausing between takes to do this, but for space limitations and having only what you need, that would be awesome.

Yes, for space reasons, but also because it would give massively cool power to the "loop record" feature. You could leave the camera recording continuously, perpetually, and wait for the "right take" or whatever. As soon as you get the right take, stop the recorder, trim to that particular take, and then continue on.

That way you could do 40 or 50 takes, waiting for the "right one"...

50 takes

50 takes

yeah, that's a great idea....hope it gets implemented!

add my vote for some sort of normal filename structure.. trying to organize them now is kinda funky.

Don't forget recording via RCA ins as channels 3&4 when using the XLRs for 1&2 ,if that can be done in firmware! 4-channel level meters, too!

Also, how 'bout the ability to play back any format, regardless of what RECORDING mode you're in?

absolutely: 4 external, high quality inputs for audio! It would be stupid not to use the four channels properly.
