Panasonic Removable Lens Four Thirds HD AVCHD Camera

I suppose that's true. I was thinking price-wise, though, in which I feel it is not really in line with cameras like the 5d MkII and XH-A1 after the necessary lenses and accessories are taken into account. $1500 for a "complete package" is a wonderful thing.

The fact the the GH-1 does offer so many of the features and capabilities of cameras at higher prices is what makes it so appealing, disregarding whether or not the camera is consumer, prosumer, or professional.

I get ya. Cameras are not classed by price, but my form factor and functionality.

The MKii is jut 2500.00, and it's no different a concept than the Gh-1 or D90 or even a Rebel. It's a VDSLR.

The Scarlet's a strict cinema tool, class being more the SI-2K and even it's own brethren RED ONE.

The good thing is that you can get TWO Gh-1's with kit lenses for about the price of an MKii.

I'd say that's already severely appealing. =D

Continue.

I'm, as they say, taking the piss out of you here. Being a Panasonic fangirl like the Red Fanboys are. Don't take me too seriously, I'm not taking you too seriously. :-)

I wouldn't take it that far. It certainly might be better than a scarlet for some applications,

You say that as if the scarlet was a camera that existed and thus could be comapred to the GH1.

Keep in mind a Scarlet will output an actual 4K video

No it won't. What you are describing is a figment of someone's imagination that has been hyped all to hell. Given that this name has been used for three different figments with different capabilities, none of which have yet been made real, you can't really say what it will or won't do. And neither can I, so maybe it will. But who cares? Really, the idea of working with 4k is a disadvantage to me, I'd be more interested in that camera if there was a way to get it to store 2k footage when shooting.

And, to be fair, higher quality footage ends up looking nicer than lower quality footage even when delivered at a lower quality - better in, better out.

Right, and what I'm pointing out is that this camera and your figment are both originating at 4k and assuming the final output is 2k, the only advantage of a 4k workflow is less degradation when you have to mix footage (Effects etc.). But if you just take the output as is and display it at 2k the results will be the same, assuming the downscaling process of the two situations is comparable and the quality of the sensors is comperable. At this point you can't say you'll get a better result in either case with your imaginary camera.

I think that the GH-1's capabilities at its pricepoint is very alluring. However, I don't think we should expect it to take over the roles of cameras costing twice (5D MkII, HX-A1) or three to four times (Scarlet) as much. It's another tool in the toolbox.

Why not? What have those other cameras got over the GH1? Seriously. I think all those cameras are now essentially obsolete, with the possible exception of the Scarlet which, being in a state of "everything will change, count on it!" could end up being something completely different "yet again".

The 5D would be a joke of a video camera if it didn't come from Canon and have such a big sensor. But what does that sensor give you? It doesn't give you a 4k original image like the GH1, it gives you a bit shallower depth of field. That's not a compelling advantage, for me at least. And not nearly enough to overcome the many other compromises in that camera.

The scarlet doesn't exist yet and as concieved is going to cost at least 5 times as much (given that RED promises low prices for cameras and then charges and arm and a leg for required accessories) ... and the only thing it gives you is the ability to have a 4k workflow. Ok, that's probably important for some people, especially if you're doing a lot of effects work. But its pretty hard to justify the price of the Scarlet now. A year ago it was a neat idea, now it is at least in danger, and when it finally ships who knows because who knows what will finally ship.

The HX-A1 has a whole list of detractions- it shoots on tape, it has tiny sensors it has a fixed lens, it originates at 2k, etc. What exactly does it have over the GH1? Balanced inputs?

This is not to say that nobody should buy any of these other cameras-- I'm sure there are reasons people might want to buy them.

But the competitive landscape has just changed dramatically.

Going forward it seems like companies should be embarrassed to ship cameras with tiny sensors, fixed lenses, or lacking good control while shooting video.

Well, I suppose the downside of arguing over an "imaginary" product is that it can be imagined to perform as well or as poorly as anyone would like to, well, imagine. We'll just have to wait a few months to find out who's a better fortune teller :)

In any event, I'm excited about the real product we have now!

Barry, the footage you said you saw at NAB, was that the promo of the Japanese women on the beach with GH1's?
No, that's not it. What i saw was one or two young ladies, a boat, and some occasional shots with a fisheye lens.

She's slightly crazy, but she's got a point.

Err... several points. LoL
I totally agree (not about the crazies though...lol). I made this same statement over at other forums. Until a camcorder comes out that at least have the same functionality as this particular cam...then I will not waste my hard earne greenbacks on another camcorder. It really does not make sense anymore. Liza hit it on the money, other camcorder manufacturers should be embarrassed by any offering less than this. I can get over form factor.

that mjpeg store footage blows the D90 away. It looks like a 30mbps+ bit-rate

I'm hanging to know what the mjpeg bit-rate is. If it's high enough it could look better than the AVCHD. I know I know everyone is going "but it's 30p". Well there's a 30p to 24p workflow in compressor that 5D users have had success with. It's slow but would be worth the effort if it looks better.

sensor question

sensor question

Can someone explain to me how this 4/3" Live MOS sensor compares to:

1/3" 3-CCD
1/3" 3CMOS

That's all I've ever known - the Panasonic DVX100A and Sony Z7U.

What would I be giving up and/or gaining with the 4/3" Live MOS sensor???

You gain shallow depth of field and extreme image sharpness.

What you give up (for video) is the rolling shutter, as vs. a 3-CCD system.

We're gonna have to start another petition for panasonic to push the AVCHD bit-rate to 24mbps

I see AVCIntra 50 or AVCUltra in the future of this camera. Maybe on the GH2? To compete stronger with the Scarlet. Is that probable Barry?

Barry -- is AVCHD bitrate selection available through Firmware updates? Or is it hardware?

Could just be part of the process. Next Lumix has Full Frame and AVCHD 24mbps? hehe

4/3 is just the system. It doesn't have to be 4:3 though. Hence the new sensor being 16:9.

It could easily go full frame, but may not be the NEXT but in ADDITION to the line-up.

nope it can only be four thirds inch. lens will crop on a full frame. its not 4:3. its 4/3" sensor

bitrate could be a processor limit
