Panasonic M4/3 GF1?

Once again, you need to view this as a still product first. Panasonic is trying to break into a market long held by Canon and Nikon, and it's a market much bigger than that served by the DVXs. Raising the prices like that won't do them any favours, especially as underdogs.

I think any market is a much bigger market than is served by DVXs....wait is it 2005? No? Ok my point (if you can call it that) stands.

Agreed I don't see them raising prices on a camera like the GH1 which is already being called overpriced for consumers for what it does compared to Nikon and Canon's entry level DSLRs (on the photo side of things.)

However that people are still talking about the DVX like it's relevant (and I guess in many ways it is) makes me hope and think that this camera will stay relevant for several years to come, even if a GH2 or GHX-170 or an AVCHD Lite GH150 comes out....ok that was a panny HD cam model number joke, I am not trying to start rumours of a GH150 lol.

Ok, my bad. I'm a still shooter so I'm not familiar with the video cameras at all! I was just using the DVX as a reference to the market of pro video camera users; certainly much smaller than the DSLR folk!

If they keep having big shortages, I wouldn't think a price increase would be out of the question. They raised the price on the DVX100 from $3495 to $3795, and when the 100A came out it went up again to $3995. And the HVX200 has gone from $5995 to $6310. And the final selling price of the HMC150 seems to have gone up, even though the MSRP hasn't.

So I agree that it's unlikely, but it isn't unprecedented.

Yes very unlikely. Most of the reviews so far have said the GH1 is overpriced.

The GH1 isn't sold out because everybody wants it, it's just because they have not made enough units for the release.

We should soon enter a new era of better reviews once people understand that 400 ISO on the GH1 is very sensitive compared to the same number on APS-C and full frame cameras.

It's also sold out because they accidentally released the best prosumer video camera around for the price when they meant to release an overpiced entry level pseudo DSLR. whoops.

LOL and on the spot Ben! Everybody I know around here who bought the GH1 did it for video use. Most of them has like me not taken a single still photo with it yet.

Its kinda ironic. We have the compact camera market to thank for the GH1. HD video is a buzz word. In a compact camera it's a gimmick to sell more cameras. So Panasonic decided to put it in the GH1 to sell more cameras. Oooops.

Who let the dogs out?

Hey, I've taken quite a few still photos! Just that they're mostly in RAW form on the hard drive. :P

I took some photo on vacation to realize I suck at photography, my girlfirend was arguing with me that this thing was no good cause the lack of mirror and real finder. I actually agree with her.

This thing is not worth it for photo, it's the same has the G1. But cost twice, but half of a HD camcorder that will almost never output something has good.

I vehemently disagree with that, and that's speaking as someone who has handled a SLR since 12!

The EVF is decent, and while it's a compromise, it's not a bad one at all. In fact, because of the snappiness of the EVF and Live View, it makes it way better to use than a right-angle finder. The GH1's sensor is better than the G1, and in many cases can put a good account of itself against my D300, a still camera that costs twice as much and has 15 years of professional digital camera knowledge behind it.

Also, the camera isn't that overpriced. Compare it with the 500D or D5000 with their respective 18-200 lenses.

It's not good because of the lack of a mirror? How does the mirror affect the image quality in any way? The sensor of the GH1 is different than the sensor of the G1 - that has been established. It has better low-light performance. If you don't find the camera worth it, then that's your own judgement to make for your own needs, but I find your comments odd. I have a Canon 30D with two $1300 lenses and the images coming from that camera - with a mirror and optical viewfinder - are actually not better than the GH1.

Also, I'm not sure what a "real" finder is. What exactly does this mean? The point of a viewfinder is to show you what you're going to shoot and how to compose it. The field of view of the EVF on the GH1 is better than most DSLRs out there. It also is able to display information that an OVF will never be able to do. You can't look at image playback and histograms on an optical viewfinder.

Ok sorry, I didn't write my entences the right way.

The fact that you don't see stuff with the mirror like Nikon or Canon, or like every SLR make it hard to capture the "good" moment. I know it doesn't effect image quality or whatever. When I said real finder, it's more like a "TTL" finder I guess.

When I meant that it was the same, I wanted to ask anyone if they would go from G1 to Gh1 only for photography? It's the same core structure, less noisy sensor (from G1 to Gh1) and some minor feature. So, does that cut it in term of photo at 1.8k for the kit?

My point was to say that ths thing is more aimed to the video than photo (lack of "real" finder, no mirror, lcd à la videocamera....)

(I'm a french guy, my sentences might not make sense)

I hope this makes more sense. Oh, I love my GH1... for video. (I'd rather take picture with something in witch I see what's going on live)

That's an awesome out of context quote...

Rabot - I am glad that you love your GH1, I love mine as well. I was thinking about what you meant by not liking the GH1 electronic viewfinder, versus a traditional TTL mirror/prism viewfinder.

I agree with you that in most instances, I like the feel of a "real" viewfinder - WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get), especially in very low light. The GH1 viewfinder automatically changes the brightness, and that behavior often confused me, so I had to learn to depend on the exposure meter and the histogram.

But there is one thing that (to my knowledge) no camera can do except the GH1 - simulate shutter speed. If you hold down garbage button (it's the button at the bottom right corner at the back) a message "SHTR SPEED EFFECT ON" will appear. You then press the "DISPLAY" button, the GH1 will accurately display the exposure you will get when you change either aperture or shutter speed. This feature works in the PASM (Program, Aperture, Shutter, Manual) mode.

The last thing I like about the GH1 viewfinder is that it displays the exact same set of info as the LCD - including histogram and guidelines. This means I do not have to toggle and move my eye between the LCD and viewfinder for different sets of info.

Lastly, I think the price is value for money. The kit lens retails for about USD900. It is a brilliant lens - but slow! It's sharp, has very good range and pretty good OIS. For me, this is a very cheap price to pay for an outstanding video camera with interchangeable lenses. I bought a Nikon 50mm f1.2 AIS - gorgeous, creamy bokeh - in video!!! What video camera can you pull out of a handbag, f1.2 and start shooting, with stereo sound and no time limit, in either 720p or 1080p at 25fps (PAL) ?? All done in stealth mode.

Rabot - sorry, just read again your post - you are right, it does not make sense to move from G1 to GH1 - for photos. However, when prices drop, and when the GH1 is sold body only, that would be great - I might buy an second one for the wifey!

43rumors.com (via photorumors.com) reports the GF1 will be introduced on Sept. 1 with the two expected lenses. Now i can wait on another wait list. Hope the Canon 60D announcement on August 19 or 25 (pick your rumor) does not eclipse the Gf1
