Panasonic M4/3 GF1?

At first glance it looks like a "B" camera to the GH1. Maybe I'm mistaken. The apparent lack of a flip out LCD monitor takes it down a few notches.

You are right.

I also don't understand the whole weight battle going on...

I've held the EP1 next to my GH1 and frankly the EP1 seemed heavier (but maybe a bit sturdier). When you add a lens like the 14-140 to the EP1 it's the same size as the GH1, but a bit more difficult to hold because it has no grip.

That doesn't mean I won't buy one when the prices go down or when the EP2/ GF1 come out

There's a weight issue going on with the GH1? After a few years of hefting around and FX1 on wedding shoots, I more than welcome something weighing around 2 pounds with glass. I'lll keep an eye on this new camera but I'm thinking it's going to be a "junior" GH1 similar to how the HC1 was to the FX1.

All I'm saying is that you can't really go much smaller than the GH1 if you want to use 35mm lenses. Anything smaller than the GH1 will be difficult to handle (I'm still waiting for a battery grip, when I use an external flash the whole camera is heavy on the hands) I definitely prefer the weight of the GH1 next to my 30D.

Boo that means I'll only see the 20/1.7 when the camera is released... and very likely bundled with the camera!

I wonder if a pancake lens will be much good for video use - pulling focus with such a thin ring and fingers so close to the camera body looks really unpractical.

That's likely; the 20/1.7 is for stills. Video-wise I'm still experimenting with the kit and my Nikkors.

A year ago I would have killed for a camera like this, as small as this.

But for now the GH1 is better. Better to handle, better for video.

The GF1 would be a great camera to take to concerts and gigs where professional style SLRs aren't allowed though :)

Especially with the nice fast pancake lens.

True, racking doesn't look fun. but you can cheat...

Plan for a cutaway just before the rack, then just do several takes of a short shot (vs having a long speech/convo with one or more racks)
Have the background actor walk into the focus plane
Dolly forward and bring the focus plane with you
Combine both: dolly/steadi backwards with walking characters, stop the camera 2 steps before the actors do and 'rack the actors' instead of the lens

If you're framing a medium shot, a piece of string around both waists tethering the actor to the DP or two actors to each other can often save a lot of tricky focus pulling - I learned this on a shoot where we wanted to do a handheld POV of one character and go round and round the room as if dancing with another.

Cheats aside, I think it'll still be great for wides with static focus or stopped down for less DOF. Shallow DOF doesn't mean you need to rack necessarily - after all, cutting between two closeups with satisfying background bokeh is wht you want most of the time. And if you're doing a very slow inward creep on a closeup you may not need to pull at all as long as the talent is properly separated from the background.

Yeah I dunno if you guys checked the new specs released for the GF1 but ...

AVC-HD 30P @... 24mpbs

Footage is a must see from the GF1 now.

So no 24p, or is 24p going to stay at 17 mbps? Or is it too early to know these things?

I'm not too crazy about it being even smaller than the GH1. That is about as small as I would want anything that is not a pocket cam for vacations or location scouting trips. Ideally for me, something in a 50D or D300 size body would be just perfect.

If they include 24p, especially at 24 mbps, along with full manual control and this thing is reasonably priced then I'd rather get something cheap and just wait it out... until the truly video/cine pro oriented vDSLR's start to become a reality within the next year or so.

What do you guys estimate this GF1 will cost? $700 to $800 for the body? Unless they package a really nice kit lens with it I can't see this thing being sold for more than a grand.

I'm guessing this GF1 will be to the GH1 what the HMC40 is to the HMC150... is there any probability that Panny raises the retail price on the GH1?

If they keep having big shortages, I wouldn't think a price increase would be out of the question. They raised the price on the DVX100 from $3495 to $3795, and when the 100A came out it went up again to $3995. And the HVX200 has gone from $5995 to $6310. And the final selling price of the HMC150 seems to have gone up, even though the MSRP hasn't.

So I agree that it's unlikely, but it isn't unprecedented.
