Can I used this pancake lens with GH1 without an adapter? I was confused because the lens spec shows 46mm diameter thread, but GH1 is 62mm. I thought all m4/3 lens have the same thread.
Thread refers to filter thread on the front...you'll note how the kit lens actually gets wider as it goes out (near the base) to accomodate it's optics.
I don't have this wonderful camera yet. Although I tried manual focusing on the canon rebel. I had a hard time. The lcd don't really show when you're out of focus. How is with the GH1?
I'd get this pancake lens in a heart beat if it's available if i had the gh1. Mainly for autofocusing while recording.
It really wouldn't be fair for me to answer that given that I haven't used both (and have actually only used the sigma 24mm f/1.8)
Here's all I can really tell you:
The Sigmas are usually slightly cheaper because you can find them used. They are large lenses...not small at all like the pancake. They have macro features (at least mine does) and have very percise, physical focus control, and can focus very close. They have shallow DOF at wider apertures that seems shallower when taking a picture of something very close, but deeper when something is further away (actually not deeper...just less out of focus in out of focus areas than other lenses) which gives a nice, sharp quality to things. You are paying the the fact that they are AF lenses but they do not AF on your camera..which sucks. Also they require the use of an adapter (nikon, canon, etc, depending on which one you get.)
The Lumix is a tiny little lens, gets nice DOF. I suggest looking here http://www.dpreview.com/previews/PanasonicGF1/page14.asp
I really like this photo: http://www.dpreview.com/gallery/panasonicgf1_previewsamples19573758/
Make sure you're looking at the right lens as they tested at least two.
I like the pancake design of the Lumix. It will autofocus on your camera but it is not silent, although I've heard it's quieter than the 17mm Olympus...but I don't know for sure if it works during video...I assume it does but yes makes sound. Its focus ring is not a physical one, and will turn freely, like the GH1 kit lens, which generally is not as nice as a real one like on the Sigma, but allows it to stay small, etc.
If I didn't have the Sigma already I would consider the Lumix but for now I am waiting for the 14mm f/2.8 they're supposed to have out sometime next year...I think I can work around not having a fast wide angle for now...as I don't usually like using a wide angle indoors anyway
How buttery the shallow dof gets is much dependent on how many aperture blades and if these are rounded. The best ones have 9 blades and they are rounded for that creamy buttery out of focus background. The shape of these blades are how out of focus will look. If heart formed it will be heart or if rounded it will be round.
The sigma has 9 I think...I'll count em when I get home...I remember that it had a lot and it looked very circular....the bokeh is very circular (not donut just circular) at nearly all apertures. I actually prefer the look of less circular bokeh but that's just me
Yeah I meant, and i think Martti did too, this photo, from the Lumix 20mm on the GF1.
I am very interested in buying the lumix and would like to in the next few weeks. One question i have which remains unsolved is how the lens operates when attached to a follow focus. First of all is it even possible because it is so small and secondly because it has an electronic focus ring does the motor prevent you from getting a clean pull or push during a shot.
