In an interview with a Spanish camera website, the product planner for Panasonic's camera division said that the company are exploring the possibility of an entirely electronic shutter for stills, which has to have a very important capability not yet possible:
The global output of the entire sensor at it's native resolution without the mechanical shutter.
When an electronic shutter is uses this 'global' output is needed to avoid the rolling shutter effect currently seen in video. This has huge consequences for video, not huge as in a lack of jello but huge as in resolution.
My guess is Panasonic may well be first to the market with a 100% electronic none-mechanical camera system in it's G system line, because their smaller sensor is easier to adapt to the way a global shutter has to work.
