I am on the verge of upgrading to the HVG 200A. I would like to know what are my options when using mini-DV tape. Am I limited to a 480p? Do I have to use a P2 card to take advantage of HDV capabilities.

Mini-DV tape allows only 480i and 480p. It will shoot at 24p, 30p or 60i frame rates. All of these SD rates are also available on P2 cards plus DVCPRO50, which is considerably better looking due to its enhanced color depth.

DVCPROHD is only available with P2 cards (or an external hard drive or computer storage solution). The HDV format is not supported by Panasonic. Various Sony, Canon and JVC cameras use HDV, but I believe each one is somewhat different, and they are not mutually compatible.

All other factors aside, DVCPROHD is a better solution in an NLE than HDV because the latter is a "GOP" format that doesn't record every frame, thus requiring larger amounts of computer power/rendering time, etc. DVCPROHD records every frame separately so it's free of these issues. One notable exception is for users of Final Cut Express, which supports HDV but not DVCPROHD. Final Cut Pro does though.

To help answer your question, we got the coupe of 200 about 1 1/2 years ago and we where recording to tape for SD projects. But now with the lower cost e- series cards we record everything on p-2 cards, much easier for us. We edit using Edius and can direct input the p-2 files and edit them without any need to convert them. As a side note when we were using tape, one of the camera had a major head clog, With the 200 you have to by the complete assembly, you can't just get the heads this was a $800.00 repair. We have been told that the tape transport is lighter constructed than on the 100.

1. Camera is HVX200a.

2. You are limited to SD when recording to tape.

3. The cam shoots DVCProHD when shooting high definition, not HDV.
