Panasonic HPX170 Price Drop...New Camera On Way?

I don't think the AF100 would be the replacement. It is nowhere near a similar market nich. I would think it could be similar to the current HPX170 with higher resolution chips which to some is the HPX170's weakest spot. Might look exactly the same except for different CCDs or possibly CMOS. Might also move away from P2 storage but I hope not. Might offer both P2 and SD card storage and multi format recording. Hope it would keep the global shutter which is a HPX170 attribute and 4:2:2 colorspace which are reasons I own one.

I don't think the AF-100 and HPX170 are competitors.

DVCProHD 3-CCD versus MFT interframe AVCCAM.

NAB should be interesting.

Panasonic HAS to be releasing something. Price drop on the HPX170 & $2k / low / no finance deals on the HPX370. They were pushing the strong deals on the HPX300 right before the HPX370 came out.

The better these deals get, the more it seems like you don't want to purchase anything for fear of getting screwed after NAB.

I've not seen any street price decreases at all.

BHPhotoVideo and other Panasonic authorized dealers still are selling at $3695.00 - same price as before.

Anyone seen a five or six hundred dollar decrease from an authorized dealer?

Im sure the hpx170, hvx200a, hmc150 will be refreshed this year..
im interested what their plans are this year on NAB
im prediciting more 3mos cams, f3 competitor and more 3d cams

I saw this morning that Full Compass was selling them sans media for $3,384 (or something like that), but that's the lowest I've seen them anywhere. Nothing in the $3k or below range. Any lower, and you're now competing directly with the HMC150.

Purely for the fun of typing about an interesting topic -- pure guessing/speculation -- I'd guess that the CCD sensors will finally be replaced with CMOS with the 170/150 replacements that any sensible person would expect from NAB 2011.

In an ideal world they'd make this palatable by increasing them to three 1/2 inch CMOS sensors in the 170/150 form factor. And, in an ideal world, because they'd only be half inch sensors the refresh rate would lead the industry and very largely eliminate jello and rolling shutter. In theory, these larger CMOS sensors would match or exceed the low light capabilities of the previous third inch CCD's. This might be exciting.

What would NOT be exciting is if they replaced the current third inch CCD's with third inch CMOS "3MOS."

I think Panasonic has gone on record saying they won't create a 1/2" camera. I can see an upgraded HPX170 using the 370's imagers. Why not, they're an existing technology, no need to create anything new. Also, an AVC-i codec.

I agree. The user reviews of the HPX-300/370 are all over the map. I think there needs to be an updated version of 3MOS or CMOS or whatever if a "new" camera is to be thought of. Everything turning to mush when panning (most current CMOS) needs to be improved imho.

That's not the sensor, that's the noise reduction. I can't speak for the 300, but on the 370 it's completely unnecessary IMO so I turn it off. The sensor is plenty clean on its own, and the noise reduction just smears everything horribly.

And just FYI the difference between the 300 and the 370 is an updated sensor.

Dealers always sell cameras at a lower profit than the manufacturer. I.e. a 1000$ price drop from the list price of Panasonic doesn't mean the dealer will get 1000$ price drop and can give a equivalent savings to end clients.

It should be interesting. I do think The HPX170 will be the last sub 5K dollar P2 camera. I hope I am wrong.
