GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

Sell me your Raven? lol

[Although I'm assuming you don't have one yet and just using the GH5 (and others) as placeholders. Or maybe you use all of them!]

HA! I am one of the blessed ones that ordered the Raven within the first 40 minutes it went live so I have had one since last May. The GH5 will be my B-Cam as well as a lower budget option, I will probably use it as my grab and go cam as well.

In addition to the Dual IS 2 icon being on, in the settings menu there is an option under Stabilizer for Electronic Stabilization (for video). Do we want to set that on, or off? Why?

It's an extra level of stabilization above and beyond the optical stabilization. It will crop-down on the image a bit, though, same as if you did it in post.

I love that Panny is putting out content, but could they look any more like dreary corporate training videos?

Beats "uming" and "ahming" pizzaz filled, endless jabbering.

Clean, succinct, gives me the facts without any drama. My only complaint is the ones I've seen are, for me, a little on the light side. Would like more depth.

But is it good, or professionally recommended? Or does it introduce unwanted digital artifacts or jittering etc?

Better to use warp stabilizer if needed, or a must if going handheld?

You can find comparisons on YouTube, but in my opinion it is better than doing it in post, as it is done earlier in the image processing pipeline (certainly pre-compression.) If I had an instance for which the optical stabilization wasn't enough, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

In theory, that may be right. In practice on OTHER CAMERAS, it's beyond horrible. On the Olympus EM-1 Mk II, for example, EIS causes a very severe watery distortion to the entire image. I've also seen this happen with SOME cellphone cameras with EIS. I haven't seen it tested on the GH5 yet. I've not seen it happen when used on an EOS M5 (though I haven't seen it specifically tested, I've seen video with it turned on, and didn't see the effect).

In general, I'd be REALLY CAREFUL about choosing to use EIS on the GH5 (or the Olympus) when you already have outstanding Dual IS2 functionality. You're going to get vastly better results using a 3-axis gimbal.

That's the thing, I'd be hyper worried about introducing weird electronic artifacts to the image. May need to test it thoroughly...

Has anyone noticed any weird artifacts with the IBIS or Optical?

So I'm here with GH5 serial key and can't find the GH5 update portal to generate the activation code... this is the most ridiculous delivery method for something entirely digital.

What is the URL to enter my serial and enable Vlog L on the GH5?? (all I can find is the old GH4 link)

I believe they've said many times vlog gives an extra 2 stops of DR, they just don't state or publicize what the actual DR figure is (ie 11? 12? 13?). From 3rd part tests we know "12" with vlog is about what we're looking at but I don't think I've ever heard Panasonic claim, confirm, or deny that other than in vague terms "about the same as the GH4" or "2 stops more with vlog"

Then again, the Vlog L page clearly states "12 stops" https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...mw_sfu1_vlog_v_log_l_function_activation.html
