GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

If it is similar to how the UX90, UX180, and DVX200 work, you should have about 10 levels of adjustability, and each level makes a really big difference. Spatial noise reduction seems to be much more prevalent on the higher settings, and perhaps eliminated entirely on the lowest settings.
I'm not positive, but I think it is -5 to 5, so yeah, about 10 levels. Like the GH4, even -5 does not equate to no NR.

Getting conflicting info on whether the speedbooster XL works or not with full frame EF lenses. It seems though that the speedbooster ultra(non-XL) works.
It works mechanically, but not electronically. All EF users can do is hope that Metabones can address with a firmware update.

I wonder if we will get any announcement from Metabones before the release of the camera. I need to eventually make a decision on the XL or the other and I'm not sure which to go for. I'd welcome the extra light and ability to get slightly wider with the XL but naturally want something that works correctly.

The XL wasn't really designed for the full m43 sensor. It can be used and some lenses will work fine but the XL was really designed and optimized for the extra crop factor of the GH4 4k video and a way to help compensate for that extra crop to get the camera back to the Ultra level when using the full sensor. To be honest if you don't yet have a focal reducer get the Ultra. In terms of light gathering we are talking 1/3 of a stop. That is not an amount that will make or break a project. The extra FOV is nice but not a huge deal either. The Ultra on the GH5 already gets you to s35mm levels in terms of how the lenses act. The Ultra on the GH5 is about what the XL was on the GH4 so really you are not losing any extra FOV.

Do we have any confirmation the Ultra even works electronically with the GH5 yet? Has anybody actually tried it? Seems to me the firmware from both would be unable to communicate with the GH5.

At least i didn't see any hint of temporal noise reduction up to ISO2000. lol
But -5 sharpening doesn't mean no sharpening sadly. I need to use optical filters to get rid of these ridiculous sharpening halos even at sharpening -5.

Is that a generic (historical) assessment of Pani cams or one based on using an actual GH5?

Thank you @Thomas Smet very good information and makes sense. Makes that order easy :)

What vari ND filter will most of you be using on the GH5? Do you use an IR cut filter as well? Looking for some recommendations.

Absolutely use an IR filter. The higher the ND you use the more cutting out the IR will matter. Regular ND filters block UV light but not infrared light. Some cameras attempt to help block IR but they can't always do the best job. I use a Tiffen Hot Mirror on top of regular ND filters and it helps a lot but it isn't as good as getting a set with IR built in. Different ND values need a different amount of IR reduction based on the strength of the ND. My Hot Mirror just applies the same amount no matter what so beyond a certain point the color starts to drift again. Manual white balancing with each ND change helps greatly but good IR ND filters are still the best option.

To be honest I don't use variable ND filters. I prefer regular ND filters since they don't also polarize the light and reflections. I only want to use a polarizer when I need to use a polarizer. A variable ND works by stacking two polarizers on top of each other and rotating them to make the light darker or brighter. Great concept but not without some issues. Thats why I prefer to change my ND filter as it is the most true way of changing the amount of light hitting the sensor without causing too many other issues.

If you are shooting run&gun a lot and adjusting exposure on the fly is more important to you than variable is a good option. I just prefer not to use them. Others swear by them. Without a doubt however get an IR one.

Here is a user who tested different ND filters on the GH4.

I will admit that I recently wish I had a variable ND filter when the wife and I were on vacation in New Zealand. Swapping ND filters all the time on vacation was a pain in the rump. Still not a fan of them for professional work but I am really considering getting one now.

Joe does that filter block IR?
Not like a hot mirror, but it is more resistant to IR than others I have tried. I know this is different from IR pollution, but the color remains nicely balanced throughout its range. At the extremes you might want to white balance, but definitely not necessary.

I would encourage you to reach out to them with specific questions, as they were quite responsive when I was evaluating.

I second that. Definitely need to know if speedbooster ultra(non-xl) works with the gh5 before purchasing.

Thanks for posting this. While there are many reasons to upgrade to a GH5, the more video that I see, the less in a hurry I am to give up my GH4. Don't get me wrong, the GH5 is a terrific camera and I will be getting one at some point. But in due time, probably after the summer and 6K mode upgrade.
