GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

For those of you needing more than what the GH5 has to offer in dynamic range, my Sony F65 kit is for sale as I'm retiring from shooting professionally. Along with my Mercedes Sprinter van full of all the grip gear and goodies needed to control lighting ratios and the dynamic range of a scene. It would be a great opportunity for someone to take the next step in their career. Details to follow.

Dave
If shipping grip gear wasn't so expensive I'd be all over it!

Hey everyone,

I'm very stoked about the GH5 and will shoot a lot in 4k 50 fps!
The question is, which external monitor will accept this signal as input? I'm using a cheap Seetec monitor at the moment with the GH3, but I don't think it is able to handle a 4k 50 fps feed.
I've seen some affordable newer monitors which accept a 4K signal, but only 30 fps at most.

Anyone knows anyhing about this? Or could recommend some fairly priced monitors?

There will likely be two ways to use a monitor. As a HD 50p signal or a 4k 50p signal. These are the options we have right now with the GH4 up to 30p. Not a lot of monitors will take in a 4k signal but plenty should take in a 1080 50p no problem at all. In fact that is what your GH3 is already putting out to your monitor. 1080p 50p. So if it works on the GH3 then just like the GH4 you should be able to shoot 4k but have the HDMI down convert to 1080p.

Even many of the monitors that can take in a 4k signal can only do so up to 30p so even if you get a new monitor for 50p you may end up using a 1080p output signal anyway.

The only portable monitors I am aware of that can accept a 2160p50 or 2160p60 signal via HDMI 2.0 are the Lilliput A10 and the Atomos Shogun Inferno (which is a recorder as well). The Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q+ can also handle 2160p50/60 but only over quad SDI so an HDMI to quad SDI converter would be required. There are certainly other HDMI 2.0 capable screens, but they tend to be much larger in size (20 inches+).

Of the three mentioned above, only the Lilliput has a 3840x2160 resolution screen, the Shogun Inferno screen is 1920x1200 and the Odyssey Screen is 1280x800.
If anyone knows of other options, I'd be curious to know about them as well.

As Thomas mentioned, in the short term it may be easiest to set the camera to output 1080p (out of the camera's HDMI out) and then you'll have a lot more LCD monitor options.

Hey if we could afford those we would be on an Alexea, so what about something within the stretch budget of GH shooters.

Well that's what happens when someone asks what's "The Best" without any qualifiers like their budget.

Budget stretched thin? Then do what the majority of people do all the way up to major motion pictures. Rent!

I didn't shoot enough anamorphic projects to justify owning a set myself. The majority of my clients don't want anamorphic for the TV spots I do.

Oh thanks! I didn't know the GH4 was able to 'downscale' the signal over the HDMI to 1080p. If the GH5 will indeed be able to downscale the 4k 50p signal to 1080p 50p, then I'm good to go with my current setup. It probably will :)
Thanks./

I haven't followed all of the GH5 developments, but the following makes it sound like the camera will output 4K/60p 10-bit 4:2:2 - http://www.newsshooter.com/2017/01/...no-recorder-atomos-ceo-jeromy-young-explains/ - which would definitely make the Inferno the best option as of right now.

I am hoping someone - Atomos Odyssey SmallHD Aputure DJI - anyone - comes up with something like the SmallHD502 size/build quality with the Infero like specs in terms of ability to record and monitor. Inferno is great, but having it in a small 5.5" iPhone + SSD sized (ala SmallHD 502) form factor and build quality would be amazing. Those things are just too bulky for true run'n'gun work.

I'm quietly confident that Video Devices might have a 60p update of their PIX-E recorder line come NAB.... I have no secret insight mind you, just that I know the company is usually on top of these things.

Cheers,

Paul :)

I'd like that, too, but I'm not so confident that the single SSD can handle the bandwidth.

I agree...and I even want it smaller. I've been waiting for a 4K Ninja Star forever. Just a little box from someone that is small and super powerful:

My PC right now is using an NVMe SSD that reaches 2GB/s write speed (that's not a misprint), so I'm pretty sure that they could build a next gen Speeddrive enclosure with such a drive without too much trouble, not that I think it needs that amount of bandwidth.

Guess we'll see, come NAB. Fingers crossed though as it would be the perfect partner to the GH5.

Cheers,

Paul :)

I'm certain they'll make a version that supports it, but I am not confident at all that it would apply to the existing models. I'd be very surprised if the existing model has an HDMI 2.0 input, it's almost certainly an HDMI 1.4. So there may be a hardware reason that stops them from being able to support 50/60p with a firmware update; it may need to be a new model.

Yes, I should have been more clear. I mean a new model, not a firmware update to the existing ones.

Cheers,

Paul :)

It would be a bit disappointing if the video devices recorders were not able to match the gh5 specs, so soon after their introduction, are we sure they have a hdmi version limited to 30p?

I'd like that, too, but I'm not so confident that the single SSD can handle the bandwidth.

From the Apple ProRes White Paper, the data rate for ProRes 422 HQ at 2160p60 is 1768 Mb/s which is 221 MB/s. There are quite a few solid state drives which are capable of that kind of sustained write speed.

It's already possible to record 2160p60 to a single solid state drive on existing ProRes recorders including the Atomos Shogun Inferno (which only has a single drive slot) and the Odyssey 7Q+. The recording formats which require two drives on the Odyssey are high frame rate RAW recording (2160p60 or 1080p240) which is saved as uncompressed data which takes far more space. Compressed (ProRes) recording modes only use a single drive.

One of the approved SSDs for the Odyssey 7Q is the 1 TB Samsung EVO 850 which is also an approved drive for the Video Devices PIX recorders.
