GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

The DpReview first-impressions review mentioned that the new battery-grip takes 2 batteries, this would mean that you could have 3 batteries powering your camera for 9+ hours of shooting time.

The B&H product description says only 1 battery, but that could be wrong:

"Extend shooting time and enjoy a more comfortable grip with vertical compositions with the Panasonic DMW-BGGH5 Battery Grip for the Lumix DC-GH5 mirrorless camera. It holds a DMW-BLF19 battery in addition to the one stored in the camera body, effectively doubling the battery life. Also, it offers a vertical position shutter release button as well as standard control buttons to make operation much smoother in portrait orientation. Additionally, it is splashproof, dustproof, and freezeproof to 14°F, which matches the durability of the camera."

Any confirmation the DMW-XLR1 adapter will work on the GH4 or not? 43rumors mentioned that it would, just curious of any confirmation yet.

Because it costs a lot more than the GH4 grip does, I figured that it has to do something different than the old grip. Being able to store 2 batteries would be one reason for the higher price.

One of the huge advantages of the GH5 is its expandability, including live monitoring and recording over HDMI while simultaneously recording internally to an SD card. It also comes with an HDMI Cable Lock Holder accessory. Shooters will have access to a 4K 4:3 anamorphic video mode at up to 60 fps, with firmware updates promised to upgrade this feature in the future. Other benefits include a dedicated GUI for videographers, which includes access to settings such as Gain and Shutter Angles, a waveform or vectorscope monitor display, and luminance level settings for 10-bit video. Finally, not to forget about audio, Panasonic has implemented a redesigned microphone with enhanced noise suppression and created a DMW-XLR1 XLR Microphone Adapter that connects via the camera’s hot shoe and adds physical audio controls and two XLR inputs to the GH5.

These video capabilities are in addition to an extremely capable set of still-imaging features, including 4K PHOTO and 6K PHOTO modes with rolling shutter distortion correction for ensuring you don’t miss a shot. These record either 18MP stills at 30 fps using HEVC or 8MP stills at 60 fps using H.264 to provide a series of high-res stills for users to choose from. Also, it has a customizable 225-area Advanced Depth-From-Defocus AF system that is faster and more accurate, able to lock on in less than 0.05 second and, with the addition of a joystick to the camera, choosing an AF point is much faster and more intuitive. Speed is definitely a theme in the GH5, with 12 fps continuous shooting with AF-S and 9 fps with AF-C for up to 100 raw frames at full resolution.

A major change is the implementation of two SD card slots, both of which are UHS-II compatible, for auto switching, creating an automatic backup, or selecting which files are saved to which card for organization. Also, five-axis Dual I.S. 2.0 makes its appearance on the flagship GH series, here using a five-axis in-body stabilization system and a two-axis lens stabilizer. This system can provide about five stops of compensation for camera movement and shake, ensuring sharp, blur-free imagery.

In addition to this, the magnesium-alloy body has received numerous improvements, including the addition of freeze-proofing down to 14°F to the splash- and dustproofing. The rear 3.2" RGBW free-angle touchscreen LCD receives a resolution bump to 1.62m-dots while the OLED viewfinder is almost entirely revised, featuring much improved 3.68m-dot resolution, a large 0.76x equivalent magnification, and an eyepoint of 21mm. The physical controls have been optimized and now include a rear joystick and the placement of the video Record button on the top of the camera.

Additionally, the GH5 now offers a USB 3.1 port for fast image transfer and tethering. A new DMW-BGGH5 Battery Grip is available for extending battery life and improving ergonomics during vertical shooting.

Those looking for wireless connectivity will be pleased with the introduction of 5GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy that will make pairing with a smartphone much easier. The full-time Bluetooth connection can communicate with the phone to switch to Wi-Fi to transfer images to the smartphone—all automatically, as well as to auto geotag phones with the smartphone GPS, remotely wake up the camera, and copy and set settings from one camera to another.

On the bright side, it seems like Leeming LUT One for V-Log L works well with the GH5 footage :) The 8bit 4:2:0 of the 60p clips still shows color macroblocking errors (especially on the girl's face closeup), but they seem to be reduced a bit, which may point to a better encoder in camera. Apologies for the big files but I didn't want to compress the results! (and be sure to download the PNG files as your browser may be downsampling them to 8bit, showing blocking where there is none in the originals)

Look forward to seeing a detailed list of video specs that come with the initial release before firmware, beyond what we know now, which is 4K gets a 10 bit 4:2:2 option up to 30 fps and only 8 bit 4:2:0 at 60fps, HD is 8 bit 4:2:0, etc
Like will the HD options essentially(other than higher frame rate) be the same as the GH4 before the firmware? I want a FULL spec sheet damn it, lol

It's very compelling given the overall package. I would have very much liked another stop of DR and another "true" stop of lowlight. 4k 60p 10b422 @ 400mpbs would be huge, and is still possible if they open it up.

I think it has to be factored in that the camera is very easy to work with, and has the potential to be incredibly lightweight when used with the right gear. All of these factors bring down the overall cost of production. For $3600 you could have the GH5, new 12-35mm lens, and the Zhiyun Crane. Payload of 2.2lbs on a great gimbal that you can handle all day as a one man band, without need for any external recorder because you are already 10-bit 4:2:2 internal even in 4K. Shooting on super cheap batteries (buy a few packs of Wasabi batteries and you could never charge once for a week, and keep a bag of batteries with you in a remote location). The new AF abilities open up doors only otherwise possible on the canon C300 mkII. 180fps lets you play against the Sony FS7.

There's something better about every other camera. The A7S, FS7, VaricamLT, etc. But when you consider the entire package - the ease of use, the workflow, the lightweight nature, the way it brings down the total cost of production (in terms of energy expenditure, crew needed, grade of stabilization gear needed, etc.) for how close the footage comes in quality to other systems...

Well, it's very compelling.

10bit footage does not currently work in BMD Fusion. The 8bit files do work. The 10bit files will have to be converted to another format before bringing them into Fusion for any comp work.

Still an advantage left to using an external recorder. You will have footage that actually works in a wide range of applications.

This often happens when a new camera comes out and all the common NLE software has to be updated to support the new format, so it does not surprise me.

These all import fine in FCP X, although the 10 bit stutters on playback on my system (i5, gtx970 4GB, 16gb ram). The 10-bit VLOG grades like a dream.

Looking back on my wishlist from September - http://blog.josephmoore.name/2016/09/22/realistic-gh5-wishlist/ - I'm amazed at how many boxes Panny managed to check. In some cases even exceeding expectations.

While I had really hoped for more dramatic PQ improvements, the sum total of what the GH5 delivers is truly impressive. And that's what the GH line has always been about...much more than one feature or one spec, it's a well thought-out platform that combines features and ergonomics that "just work" day in and day out.

Kudos Panasonic!

There's a chat with Nick Driftwood who has the camera in hand on personal-view.com. AF Assist while recording is enabled!

According to Mr. Driftwood chat on personal-voew, the AF capabilities in video put it up there in C300 MK2 land. Driftwood Chat.jpg
