GH5 Panasonic GH5 6K Video upscaled to 8K YouTube frame

But ultimately the question is does it matter?

I made two videos with the GH5, one at 4K and one at 6K, then compared the two frames. To me it seems the 4K has a better dynamic range, has less noise, does better anti-aliasing and has a similar resolution as the 6K...

6k (5,2k) has about 1.35 times the resolution of 4k. 5184/3840=1.35

It is probably mostly marketing, perhaps 5K would have been more appropriate.

Early in their GH5 promo Panny made the point that the 4:3 6K Photo frame has the same total pixel count - 18.7Mp - as a true 6K 16:9 frame. Ergo the "6K" moniker, I guess. The 3:2 version has slightly fewer at 17.9Mp.

yyeeeeaaahhhhhhh.... I get that pixel count idea, but "K" numbers have never equated to pixel count. Always and should stay with (near) horizontal resolution count. Or next thing you know, up is down, black is white, and left is chocolate.

Yeah the name is a dumb marketing decision for sure and it should have just been called 5k which it really is and it would have still been impressive. Some marketing person at Panasonic got excited at plastering a selling point on literature and they used some fuzzy alternate reality logic to explain it. Whatever. Its a higher resolution mode that uses the full sensor readout and thats all that matters here. What the name is doesn't matter at all. They called have called it Fred or super duper definition video or Goldilocks and it still wouldn't matter. What matters is what it puts out.

I made a crop of GH5 6k photo compared with upscaled 4k video. 6k photo has clearly more resolution.

Well of course it does. 6k (5k) will always have more detail than 4k. The point is does shooting 6k (5k) and scaling down to 4k in post for a 4k delivery matter vs just shooting 4k to begin with? We don't really have a 6k delivery out there yet and 99.9% of consumers don't have a 6k monitor. Unless you have a very specific need to shoot 6k video you have to ask yourself is it really worth it if you are delivering HD or 4k?

Cameras like RED shoot 5k and higher video to help get over the limitations of Bayer sensors and to give more creative room in post for VFX. They don't do it to deliver a 5k movie or upscale to 8k to play on YouTube. It is strictly a way to deliver more natural detail when delivery 4k or 2k. The GH5 already handles that scaling very well in camera. If you prefer, for VFX reasons, to scale using other methods for a specific look like Gaussian or Lanczos then by all means shoot 6k (5k) and process the material as desired in post. If the aim is to deliver really nice looking 4k or UHD video then I doubt the 6k (5k) mode really provides much advantage and will likely result in much longer processing and rendering time.

FRED would be PERFECT!! Fractured Reality Expanded Definition :)
