GH4 Panasonic GH4 & 4K Interface Pricing Texas Media Systems

Yeah while I hope this kicks Canon in the ass to do something big with the upcoming 7d I somehow feel they will do nothing.

This seems pretty amazing to me. $3300 for 4K 10 bit output, XLRs. Only a few years ago, this would be a crack dream. I only hope the rolling shutter isn't too bad.

To be fair, BM4k does close to this. Sensitivity is somewhat low and audio preamps aren't very good and there are a few other issues, but it does pull off fat 4k at ~$3k.

Note that other than the internal recording, the GH4 alone cannot output 4K video. The HDMI out on the camera body is downconverted to HD. To get the 4K video output, one needs the YAGH accessory base. This will give 10-bit 4:2:2 4K video out via 4x SDI (or also by 2x 3G-SDI, I'm pretty sure). This is a perfect pairing with the Odyssey7Q, which will be able to accept either form of the 4K SDI output and record it in the "popular codec" in 4K 10-bit 422HQ. The Odyssey7Q will also act as a high quality monitor for focus, color, and exposure with its unparalleled OLED display and numerous image analysis functions. BTW, the 4K video "popular codec" will be included in the $2295 base price of the Odyssey7Q, and we fully expect it to be available before the GH4 arrives on the market.

It's a pretty killer deal.

AHA! Thanks for the info, Mitch!

Mega body only price... WOW

.....Awaiting BH to accept preorders!

Has this changed since the official release??

From the presentation: (Page 15: HDMI Monitor-Through)

4:2:2 10-bit Output
In Creative Video Mode, it is possible to output motion pictures* through the HDMI connection in higher picture quality.

Ideal when the HDMI output is to be saved on external devices.

* It is not possible to record motion picture or still picture on the SD memory card in the camera unit.
* For [4K] or [C4K] video output, use an HDMI cable that has the HDMI logo on it, and that is described as "4K compatible".

Hey Mitch,

I know that the Odyssey 7 has not been released yet, but should we assume that the base Odyssey 7 will not be able to record 4K 10-bit 422HQ in the popular codec from the GH4 with the YAGH? And what about 60fps at 1080p 10-bit 422HQ?

Thank you,

Early reports did mention 4K out of the HDMI but this seems to verify what Mitch says. I was hoping this wasn't the case but makes sense, so if you need a better 4K codec Then you need to buy the YAGH interface.

Hey it does have a headphone jack!

The Odyssey7 will not record 4K in any form. It will also not record 60p HD over HDMI, but will via HD-SDI.

Hey it does have a headphone jack!

The camera body will play back internally recorded 4K, but in record mode "monitor-through" the output is downconverter to HD. To get a true 4K output the accessory base is required.

Automatic down-conversion (4K → 1080p only)

Damn... I was looking forward to downsampling the 4k to get 10bit 1080p 444 - can understand why - good marketing of the YAGH box, if nothing else.

Well 10bit 4:2:2 4K down convert to HD isn't so bad.

But now that the live HDMI output is limited to 1080p and with no internal codec recording to the SD card in 10bit 422, how will you get that signal - without buying YAGH box?

Have I missed something?

Typically I'm not a fan of 7" monitors or bolt-on recorders for handheld work, but very interested in how the GH4's internal 4k 4:2:0 down scales to 1080p. For sure color will improve, but if 8-bit banding is eliminated I'll be thrilled.

That said I'm still interested in the Odyssey7Q for other uses & likely pickup one soon.

To add to this HDMI 4K output I was watching this video from Personal View. The Panasonic rep was demoing the system and he showed a micro HDMI conector that goes from the camera to the recorder then explains this.

https://vimeo.com/87971991

“At the same time you got HDMI output here By connecting to the Micro HDMI slot of the camera your able to shoot at 4K 24p cinema IPB 100mbs and thats 4:2:2 10bit. So real uncompressed 4K.”

So it seems a 4K stream goes out of the Micro HDMI from the GH4 then into the YAGH getting uncompressed 4K 4:2:2 10bit. It's not clear if this is capable if bypassing the YAGH. Confusing for sure.

I've been following pretty much any videos I can find on the GH4 and it seems like some of the reps are getting mixed up or maybe they are coming from the Lumix stills division background and don't fully understand video bit rate/bit depth & how the output signals work. From the videos I've seen where the reps actually seem to fully understand they say that the micro HDMI output is limited to 1080p output when in 4K live mode, only footage recorded in camera at 8-bit 4:2:0 can be played back in 4K over the micro HDMI. Though I wouldn't be complaining if I am wrong and 4k 4:2:2 comes out of the HDMI.

I'm pretty sure it is a hardware limitation of that port, not to mention likely a processing throughput limitation for the camera. You're asking for two high threshold data streams to function concurrently. This is akin to the reason why other cameras in the past have needed to drop monitor output resolution when going into record. Too much data load.

Panasonic needs to keep the camera to a certain size, weight, power draw and price. And ours is a secondary market. But they consider it an important enough market to offer a professional tool alternative, the YAGH base, which also does a bunch of other stuff for you. It will function as (most of) a rod base, it has proper audio controls and inputs, and it offers proper video outputs, complete with a high level video signal. If it seems pricey at first, consider the cost of a rod base kit and an audio box that you can now eliminate. It's really not so bad at all.
