GH4 Panasonic GH4 & 4K Interface Pricing Texas Media Systems

Such a converter would have to be 4K compatible. The Blackmagic converter I know is only for HD.
Black magic has a 4xSDI -> HDMI 4k converter, but it is for taking a 4xSDI source and outputting to HDMI 4k monitor/device, they would need to make one that goes the opposite way.

Yes, that's basically to get a signal to a monitor. As I said, I do not believe the opposite direction converter exists at this point. Perhaps one might be introduced at NAB, but I caution that it is likely to be both very expensive and not condusive to hanging off a camera rig.

Of course there is one such device that has been announced -- the YAGH. Wait to see what your other options might be and the YAGH might start looking better & better.

BTW, for the people doing the cost comparison to value of the YAGH, please note that if purchased as a kit with the GH4 it does not cost $1999 but instead $1600. If a baseplate cost $300 and an XLR audio breakout costs $300, then that's $1000 for a 4K HDMI to SDI converter. And actually that's not bad, especially as it is one box not three sitting on your tripod.

Just sayin'

Don't forget that the YAGH also syncs timecode. I have no idea*if an equivalent standalone timecode unit even exists to compare to, but it should be factored into the value analysis too.

I am 'the people' you speak of....lol

Some people have questioned whether the YAGH even has mic-pres in it but that still doesn't make sense to me. It would stand to reason that if there are inputs on the YAGH along with gain control knobs and audio meters there has to be mic-pres in the YAGH. So essentially the YAGH gives you quality embedded audio and a means to output 4k signal to existing external 4k capable recorders without having to rig anything else up other than the recorder itself.

The down side is that while the YAGH is an integrated Panny solution it's not what many people would consider the most...ahem....how shall I put this...it's not the most elegant of solutions.....I still think people will need to rig this set up and the YAGH makes it more complicated to do so as I think it will be a tight fit with many cage enclosures.

Others have mentioned that an Australian external recorder company is coming out with a product that will record 4K directly from the micro HDMI output. If this is accurate then we are still going to need to manage audio with some sort of external device..... unless of course said company stepped up and actually integrated a proper audio solution like the PIX240i. I still think an Odyssey 7Q with an integrated audio component would make for an excellent 8Q.....just sayin!

So in Summary

1) YAGH = Embedded audio w/Video output + Brick attached to bottom of GH4 + Rig + Recorder

2) No YAGH =

A) Rig + Recorder + Audio Recorder

B) Rig + Recorder with integrated Audio Solution

I am crossing my fingers for option 2B

How would you get power to the YAGH? I dont know what the unit consumes of hand, but a gold mount battery with the right polarity would have to used in the field since it does require power.

Below is some new GH4 that I found on Youtube. Be sure to click the gear button to switch the resolution to 4K

This is the footage that has the jello I downloaded a day or two ago. Does this bother anybody else? Especially in the plant shot. Reminds me of a cell phone video how it wobbles... Is this because of 4k? ETC mode? I used to own GH2s and they never did this when handholding.

I agree, that footage looks terrible. Never seen anything like that on the GH3. The GH4 is suppose to scan the sensor twice as fast to drastically reduce rolling shutter but that looks much worse than a GH3. Admittedly, it looks handheld and on the end of a long lens so that never helps.

Looks like a Switronix Powerbase 70 with the correct connector already exists as an option

Regarding the wobble/jello, I saw much worse than that WHEN I used lenses without image stabilization, handheld on my GH2. It was terrible, really. So that's my guess for what happened here. With that kind of DOF, probably one of the really low f-stop manual lenses (no IS) available for MFT, shot handheld. It could also possibly have something to do with the UHD resolution though, perhaps reading the sensor more slowly.

Just throwing this in here, Since the GH4 has the same outter body as a GH3 basicly, and takes the same batteries, is there any chance it could fit the GH3 battery grip? that might be pretty cool.
