Panasonic GH2, vintage Canon FD 50mm lens, portrait of a blonde model

I went to Photoshow in Milan and I had the possibility to try this combo under almost ideal conditions. There where a few models, I shot the Canon 50 mmm 1,4 wide open. I wish I had the canon fd 85 mm, but it arrived a few days later. I set 160 Iso. I wish I had more time to experiment with white balance. Anyway it seems to me that the canon fd lenses are very good on this camera body, and make up for the lack of fast lenses. They are cheap and widely available on ebay.

the second photo shows why people still like the look of the canons better. You get greenish highlights and purple shadows. You can't fix this in camera with custom color profiles. It comes from the way the GH2 profits from the resolution of the green channel (I read some place). Correcting those purple shadows is not that easy ...

Forgive me for stating the obvious but this woman has very fair colored skin and is surrounded by green leaves in the second picture. Not so much in the first which accounts for the difference in the hue. What color can't be manipulated by white balance anyway.

Rambooc, I have already uploaded video made with this combo (Panasonic GH" and Canon 50 FD); here is the link

Yes, there is a greenish cast. In my little experience it is not that easy to get white balance right straight away and it is very tough getting it afterwards. For skin tones, I find very useful this page on smugmug site:

Anyway I cannot follow everything that is written there because I use the Gimp, which does not support CMYK.

I'll try to fix white balance, though.

Green

Green

I have definately noticed the GH2 picking out greens... some lights that appear yellowy/white to the eye come out green in on the GH2...
anyone noticed that?

oh... just googled it... think i found out what it is... although my 550d pointed at the same lights hardly picks up the green at all

I've only ever had a problem when using the AWB, When using one of the presets or manual white balance colours have come out right for me. I think Panasonic need to correct the way AWB works at least from what I hear for fairer skin people, this isn't a problem with the GH2 specifically I think the whole G series suffers from this, even the LX3/LX5 do

Absolutely! It is very noticable with fluos and some greenish skin tones even if you use the white balance snapshot. Never had this problem with my DVX100 wich was soooo right in this regard. I must manually correct it in the cam wb fine settings by adding a touch of magenta/yellow to get rid of the green cast.

My point is that even using manual WB procedure, you can have a green cast in certain conditions.

Some specific color fine tuning is essential in these situations.

now seriously, that may be correct.
could you please describe the 'treaky' situations where i should tweak the fine tuning?

thanks.

Nothing especially treaky. Lighting with this kind of fluos for example:
OPL-CL275 Cool Light Head (3 fluorescent bulbs head)

I guess the problem is related to the fact that the camera is fooled by the fluos CRI, but it's just a guess...

LEDs could also give the same problem i found.

I'm not sure if this is true but not all people see the same hue or fidelity in colors. I have been in a store when my wife tells me she likes the green dress and I swear its brownish. Similarly with dark blues and blacks. I have no clue what algorithm Panasonic used for processing color but its very subjective to say what one see's is the true color.

The color balance is all over the place, this makes me assume that the camera was set to auto-white-balance, which is a huge mistake.

For accurate and stable color with the GH-2 I recommend using the manual degrees Kelvin color balance setting for everything. ( photo and video )

The video of the stage show looks like it was lit by the new LED stage lights which cannot be properly balanced because these are partial spectrum lights. ( it's like trying to white balance the "orange" sodium-vapor lights you find on most highways, it cannot be done )

Are you guys using Aperture by any chance? They screwed on the RAW processing at some stage that can give a greencast on certain photos
