Panasonic G9

I've been following it all week...supposedly it was going to be announced on Monday, but they did it today.

A thread about it would have definitely showed up eventually.

Looks good but too close in price to the GH5 for video shooters IMO.

So, this is a $1700 camera that is not for video shooters, it's mainly for photogs... but it still has 4k 60 fps. Time for everybody else to catch up, right?

I do like that top LCD screen though. Kinda hoping the GH6 sports one of those. That's probably the one thing I miss about shooting a Canon DSLR.

No one should be shooting video on any stills camera but we do anyway, so there is no such a thing anymore. Every camera over $600-$700 is probably going to have multiple video features from every company. Maybe not all of the features we're looking for, but decent high-quality 4K video like what's coming from the G85s and the XT2s and the a6300s will be the norm.

But now if we can at least get 4K/60p and stop mixing in 1080/60p and 1080/120p with our 4K footage...that's icing on the cake for sure.

Panasonic, much like their brethren, is just trying to sell the same camera twice. In other words, everything on GH-5 could have been on G9 and vice versa.

As a GH5 owner, I am curious to see how the photo performance compares between the G9 and the GH5 ?

I thought of picking up an Olympus EM1 Mk2 for m4/3 photo work, but maybe this might be a better fit ? ( otherwise another GH5 body would not hurt )

Companies need new tricks with each new model to sell cameras.

The GH5 was teased over a year ago...maybe the feature didn't even exist back then.

Probably a lot of room, a lot of possibilities for certain cameras.

Most companies fix issues or slightly improve their cameras with FW updates, but companies like Blackmagic have completely transformed their cameras with updates over the years.

JVC enabling 4K/60p on the LS300 two years later after its release was one that kind of shocked me, and made me think the cameras we buy are probably so much more capable than what they provide us (if the hardware/software allows it).

If matching is possible, G9 might be a worthy second camera for dual cam scenarios as well for GH5 owner who sometimes shoots stills.

Norbro,
Magic Lantern and GH hacks have suggested that for some time.

True...but I'm thinking on a bigger level.

Like all of the features from ML using its own software to help the shooter are cool, but maybe some of the stills cameras that have 5K/6K sensors in them could shoot 5K/6K in at least 24p.

Or maybe more cameras could actually shoot 4K/60p, but don't.

The hacks/bitrate improvements were awesome at the time, but compressed video (even ProRes) being limited was always understood.

When ML unlocks the 5D Mark IV to shoot 4K/60p, call me...haha.

Makes me wonder if a firmware update could enable 10bit recording, ditch the 30 minute record limit and maybe even enable higher res anamorphic on this thing.
