Panasonic G2 commercial shot with Canon 5DMkII?

god, that's embarrassing. are you sure about this? Using the product of their #1 competitor? That's like Toyota shooting a commercial with cameras rigged to a Honda because it handles better. WTF???

maybe their excuse will be "The GH1 is so hot right now it's all on backorder and even we couldn't get a hold of one, so we went to the second best cam." that would be epic

The ad was of course made pre hack. However, Panasonic probably didn't make the ad themelves, they likely hired a production company, or an ad agency which got a production company, that happened to use that particular hardware.

Still, pretty embarrassing.

Wonder if making of video will be pulled.

The GH1 pre hack might have had codec issues but Olympus shot their ad, which has been broadcast everywhere, on an EPL1, which if I'm not mistaken uses AVCHD lite.

During the Wimbledon broadcast today I saw an HD broadcast of an Olympus Pen commercial, which ended with "perhaps the most extraordinary thing about the Pen, is that this commercial was shot on one."

It looked pretty decent. Nothing special, but certainly acceptable.

AVCHD "lite" isn't bad, it just means no 1080. It doesn't mean it uses a lower bitrate or worse compression, it just means there's only 720p.

If the production company had any emotional IQ about this, they would pull that video immediately. If I'm hired to do a spot for Applebee's, you darn sure wouldn't see a "making of" video showing crew catering from Chili's!

Yeah, that's pretty silly, man. I could see if it was shot on Film... but come on... It's okay to shoot on something else, but you're just asking for a kick in the pants by posting up the making of CLEARLY showing more use of the competitors product than the actual product you're selling.

To their credit, they DID use the G2 for the most interesting shots.

I don't see a problem... the only problem is WHY ON EARTH would anyone cut in a shot of the 5D in the behinds the scenes stuff?

If they hadn't shown it, we all would have assumed they'd shot it all on Panasonic stuff.

Yes, there's a making of that one, too -- see link below. Not the bare bones E-PL-1 camera like they show at the end of the commercial, but at least they did use the camera. I was surprised they didn't shoot the G2 commercial with the G2 itself.

What a PR nightmare for Panasonic. Canon could really capitalize off this if they wanted to saying something like "Even Panasonic uses our cameras to shoot their commercials."

The production Co. will be fired by Panasonic but hired by Canon.

I don't see what the big deal is. I own a GH1 but pre-hack the 5D is a completely different class of camera spec and price-wise. I wouldn't say the stock GH1 or any DSLR camera that panny makes is a 'competitor' to the 5Dmkii. If they shot it on the PEN, D90, or 550, that would be a different story.

Hm, I wonder what they shot the 'making of' video on.

:)

Well, if you look at the last shot in the video there is some horrible aliasing going in the building behind the guy speaking. Might be a clue to what camera was used for the "behind the scenes" shots.

The PEN actually shoots MJPEG (720p).

They could have, and should have, shot it with any one of the numerous other Panasonic cameras. It didn't have to be a GH1 or any DSLR at all, but it shouldn't have been a competitor's camera.

The way I see it is that they are trying to sell a Panasonic camera and showing how capable it is. Shooting it with another brand camera sends the wrong signal -- like my hiring someone else to shoot my demo reel.

It should have been shot with a G2, but any other Panasonic product would have been better. Olympus gets points for taking control and actually using their product.

The directors are Neveldine/Taylor who made Crank I & II using to a great extent Canon consumer camcorders. Don't think they have to work that much to get ad gigs. But at Panasonic UK heads could roll soon...

AHHH OMG. I know the freerunner with dark hair. Dan Mast. I've been doing parkour/freerunning for 3 years and I have trained with him a few times here in LA. Anyways I don't know him personally but have trained with him and it's pretty cool to see him on this.

But yeah, that was stupid of them.
