Panasonic BT-LH80W?

Has anyone found out if this monitor can be flipped and mounted upside down.

I feel like a dummy I was at cinegear expo in Los Angeles and didn't look to see if it could be mounted from the top. I got to play with the monitor on a hpx2000 and was pleased with the image it produced. It's not the 900 and i am under the impression it isn't a full res monitor but for the price, the pixel to pixel, red focus, and waveform should allow you to get what you need from it.

Barry,

Since it appears that you are the only one on the forum to have actually used this monitor, may I ask you the question?

Does this monitor have a flip mode fuction?

I dug around in the menus but didn't find one. Might be there and I just didn't find it though. I mean, the HPX500 has the flip function, so it's highly possible the monitor has it too, but I didn't see it. The owner's manual hasn't been posted online either but when it's posted we should dig through it to see.

Barry, further, can the BT-mount connect to the top and bottom of the monitor, so that we can mount flipped, if no flip mode internally?
Never seen a BT-mount so I don't know. I don't recall there being a thread mount on the top of the monitor... might be but I didn't notice it.

Thanks for the confirmation regarding pixel-to-pixel HVX component, phew. I am assuming also the focus in red feature functions via component input.
Yes, focus in red works in all modes whether HD-SDI, component, or viewfinder input.

Not sure what to think of the viewfinder input; I mean I really didn't dig too deep into it but it appears to me that the monitor goes into standard-def 480/60i mode when connected via viewfinder input, and it's black & white only during that mode. (well, either that, or the guy who set the monitor up on the camera didn't know how to set it up better, and considering there's no manual out yet I must allow that as a possibility!) Pixel-for-pixel doesn't seem to work in VF mode (because it was in SD, so it's already pixel-for-pixel); VF mode made the tally lamp work, but... big deal, right? The focus assist shows up on the monitor when it's in VF mode, but considering the monitor has two other focus assist modes it seems superfluous to have the histogram focus assist up there too... I guess overall I don't really get what the big deal was about it connecting as a viewfinder, when it seems more potent when connected as component or HD-SDI.

Sorry about all the questions Barry and Jan. I guess some of these need to be addressed at some time.
Oh, definitely. Jan's not the product line manager for the monitors, so I don't know how many answers she'll have for us. I had a chance to work with the monitor at Broadcast Asia, and as part of my NZ series of seminars. It's really, really cool, I want one badly. Not sure how it'd mount on an HVX200 though. It's very light for a monitor, but that's without battery -- if you put an Anton Bauer brick up there it'd probably be way too heavy for the handle. I'm thinking I'd probably use my battery belt to drive the monitor when using it with the HVX200 in a battery-operated circumstance; the monitor has 12V XLR input (as well as an AC power cord socket and an Anton Bauer battery mount). For use with an HPX500 it can be powered from the HPX500's battery, but on the HVX200 you'll have to figure your own way of getting power to it. I don't know that I'd risk trying to mount the monitor on a Noga (or "bt-mount") on the HVX's handle and then further push the issue by putting an Anton Bauer battery on it... I'm guessing that'd be too much.

I agree Barry, I will go for the 12v input and use my existing external batteries and also try and make a custom DC to XLR power cable for a Tekkeon MP3400 battery.

The BT-Mount not specifically listed for use with the HVX handle, here.

The BT-LW80W holes on the top and bottom of this diagram (red arrow). Perhaps for the BT-Mount prongs or mounting thread? I'm looking forward to Panasonic publishing the manual. Thanks for the feedback Barry.

I bought the original 7" "favorite" Marshall LCD (V-R70P-HDA) when I picked up my HVX in March of 2006... I have never been pleased with it's lack of functionality.

I was at cinegear expo this year and I believe i found a better solution, not only to any new marshall, but the new Panasonic 8" too. It's a new LCD offered my Nebtek coming out in the next two weeks. Cost is expected to be about $300 more than the Marshall and cheaper than the panny.

The new Nebtek LCD will feature flip mode(s) at 90 & 180 degrees, Under & Over scan, and the same type of focus assist of the panny, but the outline will be WHITE, not RED. Who cares if its WHITE or RED? Me.

I have a Redrock M2 Adapter.

Most of the time I have problems with focus is low light. If the focus assist is RED, it's kinda hard to see the Red outline of what's in focus in a scene that is dark grey (or black) on black. Right?

Regarding mounting options, I have abandoned the Noga arm and discovered the Ultralight Control system. Stronger, lighter and cheaper. You can grab them at Film Tools in Burbank (or again, Nebtek and no... I don't work for them).

Steve, it will be interesting to observe Nebtek's release. Good point on the focus in red/white. Similarly, with adapter use, I find it very difficult to find focus on the fly in low light, even with a 17" or 24" LCD. White in this circumstance would be a good choice.

The two features the Panasonic has that I want: Waveform and pixel-to-pixel. Nebtek?

Do both the Panasonic and Nebtek have a blue gun feature to calibrate to bars?

The BT Mount appears to be the same as those Ultralight Control Systems arms you pointed out. The BT Mount has an AC-MB monitor bracket, and the two prongs appear to sit flush with the back of the monitor, at 90 degrees, and do not likely go into the holes I identified in the diagram of my previous post. My guess is the holes indicated on the BT-LH80W may be a 1/4" and a 3/8" thread, or two of the same threads, in case you strip one. The monitor bracket seems like a good idea, to prevent over screwing the thread and monitor positional slippage.

I am making a bit of a big deal out of this thread, as I have been waiting about one year to purchase an on-board monitor, and being in a location where I can't go down to the store and look and test this equipment and accessories, I want to make sure I order the correct items, the first time. Interested to learn more info, and about the new Nebtek.

I can vouch for the Ultralight arms as well. And everything about this new Nebtek monitor sounds like it is going to be the ideal solution for the HVX200 when it comes to mounting a monitor.

The Nebtek will have blue gun, and i also forgot to mention that it will have squeeze mode.

It won't have the WFM and I am not sure about pixel-to-pixel.

I have an email into Nebtek and will report back..

The Nebtek unit uses a Pixel to Pixel mapping ratio so that none of the image
is lost or compromised. The pixels on the Nebtek unit are also square.

Currently there are no plans for a built in Waveform monitor, but the next
generation of units may. It depends on how many customers
demand it before the next production run. (Quote from Nebtek)

The Nebtek LCD monitor will have mounting holes for our Lithium-ion battery adapters (Sony, Panasonic, JVC or Canon), Anton Bauer, IDX and PAG. Basically covering the full spectrum of professional batteries being used in the field today.

Whatever batteries you choose, there will be a mount for you.

Steve, it will be good to see Nebtek's official announcement, hopefully soon. I am not sure the reference to pixel-to-pixel sounds the same as Panasonic offers with it's model, like the BT-LH2600, when displaying 1080 on a screen with resolution of about 1350+ pixels horizontal. I have seen info that Nebtek offer HD-SDI as standard, which is cool. The Daydream and Sunshine models: it will be interesting to learn if they share all the same features. Time, tick, tick, tick...

has this monitor been released yet? Part of me wants to wait until the Red releases its LCD screen instead of buying this one, but we're still left in the dark about what the specs are on the Red screen.

anyone's thoughts?

I've had one on order for a couple months, my dealer got one in for the one guy in front of me in line and delivered it beginning of this week. I'm next, but he still hasn't given me a date when it's supposed to show up.
Good luck to ya!

We are lucky to have the BT-LH 80 at our office and have been using it for a few weeks. We took it to Panama for a 17 day shoot. I have the manual too if anyone needs info. from it. I have used the monitor in a # of different power configs. It's nice and light. It works really good in bright sunlight with a hoodman h900 (long) .

I cant find anything in the manual about flipping, but the monitor has Both 3/8 -16th and 1/4 -20 threads at the Top and Bottom. That should be good enough if you really need flipping.

We have had trouble with the Pana /HVX component cables we have so we ordered a new longer 15' one from an online a/v supplier in CA. Its more flexible and works perfect. (I think the cable was originally made for the PS3 game system. ) We googled for a "D4" cable to find it.

The cable problem had nothing to do with the monitor .

Are you using this with an HVX? If so, can you comment on the usability of the "Focus in Red" feature? Really curious about that. Especially for stuff on the fly.

Yes we use it with the hvx's. Focus in RED is really spot on for doing double-checks of what is in focus on your tight -medium shots. It is very helpful to use when pulling critical focus from one object to another during a difficult rack focus.
