Panasonic BT-LH80W?

Anyone hear anything about a release date for the panasonic HD lcd monitor? I plan on buying either the pany or the new marshall... thoughts or suggestions anyone?

I haven't seen anything about a new Marshall, but I've used the Panasonic LH80 and it's really excellent. It gives a pixel-for-pixel display for pixel-accurate focusing, and it also has the focus-in-red feature, and you can even use both focus assist functions together. Plus the waveform monitor. If you're using it with an HPX500 you can power the monitor from the 500's DC out jack too.

More expensive than the original Marshall, but if you're buying it for focusing with, the Panasonic has a lot going for it with those two focus assist features.

Barry,

The main purpose for my future aquisition of an onboard LCD monitor is focus, especially now that I'm using a DOF adapter with my HVX. I have been reading many of the opinions here and I'm trying to make the right choice. Buy once, buy right! I am torn between the marshall and the new panasonic. The M is available but the P has the focus-in-red which to me is an invaluable tool.

Have you any insight into the availablity of this great new HD LCD?

Thanks

I thought it was already available? I just checked on the Panasonic site and it doesn't say "coming soon"... but B&H doesn't list it as "in stock" yet, they just say "accepting orders". They have it for $2199.

What new features does the Marshall offer? I can say this, if it's still just an 800x480 panel (or 864x480 or whatever the old one was) then the Panasonic would be much more accurate for focusing because of the pixel-for-pixel and focus-in-red features, and the built-in waveform is extraordinarily handy. But the Panasonic doesn't include HD-SDI in its base price, so if that was important for someone, they'd have to budget in for the optional HD-SDI board. Not an issue for HVX users though.

Barry, would you please suggest a cost effective battery and charger product for powering the BT-LH80 as an HVX user? Perhaps based on using the XLR power input and mounting the battery to the rails, or elsewhere, to reduce potential of wobble/backlash, reducing load on a Noga arm. I have never used a mounted monitor like this or the Marshall, so I am trying to limit potential issues that come to mind. Appreciate any feedback you may offer. Thanks.

The Battery bracket on the back of the monitor will allow for an Anton Bauer Gold Mount Battery to be snapped right on. Other than that and you want to work against the 4 pin, I would suggest any of the Battery belt types that offer the 4 pin as the interconnect.

Hope that helps,

Jan

Thanks for the reply Jan. I was thinking some of the AB batteries are pretty big and heavy and wanted to avoid the weight on the monitor, leveraged to the camera, even though I would mounted the monitor to a 17 lb Noga arm, connected to a rails block. I have some battery belt products, yet want to get away from them. I have a few Tekkeon MP3400 batteries, and I might look to make a few 'tip' to XLR 4-pin power cable adapters made up, as these batteries fit snug under my rails.

Jan, Barry distilled that this monitor is likely released now, please confirm the BT-LH80 is in fact?

Hi,

The monitor is shipping this month, and I think the first of them have hit stateside.

As far as that Noga arm, the product manager for the BT monitor has found a superior arm, that frankly surpasses the Noga in many ways, the first being that in order to move it you have to release the clamp. The problem that I have seen over the years with the Noga is that eventually you end up having to figure out how to tighten it because even in its clamped position you can forcefully move it. This wears down the ability to clamp and hold it in the position.

The new Arm is called a BT-Mount and is available from your Panasonic dealer as well.

Best,

jan

Jan,

Yes, I saw the BT-Mount as an accessory listed under the BT-LH80. Hard to understand it, as there is only one perspective photo displayed and I find nothing else on the net when searching.

Two questions, if I may:

1. Does the BT-Mount, mount to the handle screw near the top of the viewfinder of the HVX?

2. If 'yes', does the HVX handle support the weight of the BT-LH80 or the BT-LH80 plus battery mounted to the monitor?

I always thought better to mount to rails, for strength. I am happy to overcome any misconceptions I have.

Thanks.

Jan,

Further questions, whilst it is quiz day:

3. Does the BT-LH80 have a flip mode, for us 35mm lens adapter users?

4. If no to 3, does the BT-LH80 allow for mounting the BT-Mount on all four sides of the monitor frame?

Thank you, in advance.

Questions:

1. Can the BT-LH80W be powered by the Anton Bauer ElipZ 10k battery?
2. Does anyone here (other than Barry Green) have any experience with this product or is it still too new?

Thanks

Oh, like Christopher Barry asked.... flip mode?

would be great to see a monitor-off review. I'm also interested in the new Nebtek and the cheap Ikan as options. Cheap is nice, but I know what you get and the people at Ikan have the WORST customer service ever! Seen it happen to a friend and it's scary even giving out 700 bucks to a company that doesn't seem to care about service.

I'd much rather pay now than pay with a failure during production. Any brand can fail, but a quality build is critical. Based on the Panasonic quality, I trust that this monitor will be worth the money. I have 2 DVX100a's and an HVX200. Love these camera's. I have a friend who produces extreme sports video content and beats his DVX up. He uses it constantly and its scratched and missing chucks from the body and it works perfectly. Quality built. I would never do to my cameras what his does to his, so I am confident they will last. I'm certain that the Marshall is of equal craftsmanship, but the Panasonic focus-in-red pixel to pixel feature.... wow!.... I'm sold. Jan said it should be here this month, but every dealer I've called says the same... "We're taking orders." Or "Should be available soon."

I guess patience is just as important.

2 questions for Jan

2 questions for Jan

I see from the online brochure that the pixel for pixel function works on 'pixels inputted in HD-SDI...' -so this does not work on the component signal from the HVX200?
In the 'Supported video formats' illustration it does not indicate 1080/25p. Is there a European version that will support this?

As the Scandinavian Panasonic office can't be bothered to answer by phone I hope Jan might?
Kind reagrds, Soren

Soren, good question regarding pixel-to-pixel only via HD-SDI input, and as for us HVX component users?

Regarding HVX 1080p25 recorded/stored in 1080i50, HVX 1080pA24 recorded in 1080i59.94, so both should output to the BT-LH80W, as per the specs for those interlaced formats, I hope.

I confirmed today that the pixel-for-pixel absolutely positively DOES work for component input. Used it on an HPX502 (NZ model) connected via component, via HD-SDI, and via viewfinder attachment.

Doesn't seem to work quite as expected for viewfinder input (meaning, the monitor attached to an HPX500 as a viewfinder) but it does work when attached via either component or HD-SDI.

It does what you want, don't worry.

The HVX200 and HPX500 don't output 1080/25p. They output their 25p as 1080/50i, and the monitor supports 50i. So if you set your camera in 25p mode, the camera will output 25p-imbedded-in-50i, and the monitor will display it properly.

Barry,

Since it appears that you are the only one on the forum to have actually used this monitor, may I ask you the question?

Does this monitor have a flip mode fuction?

Barry, further, can the BT-mount connect to the top and bottom of the monitor, so that we can mount flipped, if no flip mode internally? Some of the diagrams in the monitor PDF brochure appear to have the two hole provisions that seem to match up with the BT-mount prongs, on both top and bottom of the monitor. Regarding the BT-mount, is it known if the HVX handle screw provision is designed and Panasonic approved for such use? It is said, do not pick up the HVX by the handle with a tripod attached below due to the weight and the handle strength, whereas this monitor (with a brick Anton Bauer battery) attached to a BT-mount on the HVX handle raises some concerns in my mind, for a whip pan or extreme tilt up or down, leveraging a lot lot of weight on the HVX handle. I would appreciate if any feedback on this point could be obtained from Panasonic reps?

Thanks for the confirmation regarding pixel-to-pixel HVX component, phew. I am assuming also the focus in red feature functions via component input.

Sorry about all the questions Barry and Jan. I guess some of these need to be addressed at some time.
