EVA1: Panasonic AU-EVA1! Announcement and latest updates

I took it as a sarcastic jab at camera manufactures announcing features to come down the road because they aren't working yet at release and they need time to make it happen, as well as claims of ISO improving and just being a firmware thing.

Mildly amusing. Slightly rude. Somewhat accurate. Potentially confusing.

But lavedir your response is odd. Life is full of unwritten rules. There's lots of things you can do in life that aren't illegal but may be considered bad form... I don't think anyone "accused' you, Mitch merely pointed out it could cause confusion and is thus an unprofessional and/or discourteous thing to do. Next time add "/joke" and all will be good, and avoid confusion from people that have no way of reading tone or intent. Not because you have to, but because you're a good guy, and you want to.

Hi Erik, I may be wrong but I dont think the Panasonic ROP will allow
a live image preview from the EVA1, but will simply control camera settings like aperature, ISO.
I hope I'm wrong, like you said it would be extreemly handy for single operators
if we could see the image and push to focus, zoom etc.
If focus cant be controlled via an app then it will be back to wired/wireless
monitors for Jib work.
Like I said I hope I'm wrong on this one.

Yes, I guess it works the same as the LT. No live image preview, no deep menus, just the main settings.

DR Is determined by noise performance... they are the same thing. DR is literally the space between white clip and noise, and ISO is essentially determined by white clip in a system with a specified 6.5stops over middle grey, so the only variable here is noise if ISO and therefore white clip are givens.

...So you're saying that footage with the widest dynamic range should also be the most noise free ?

Yes to some degree. Noise appears in different luma levels, but yes generally if you're comparing footage, more DR means quantifiably less noise. Obviously this is often confounded by the fact that people compare footage between cameras or even camera modes that is not graded to match or otherwise matched. Noise is a hard thing to quantify since you can get rid of it by crushing image range and exposing differently, but then it becomes hard to compare. You might, for example, say a Canon DSLR has less noise but that's usually because it's exposed and color profile designed for a much smaller DR with blacks very crushed. If you expose and grade to match you might not even see anything on the DSLR where the EVA1 sees shadow detail and noise...

Firmware upgrades are regularly advertised as user benefits.

Not as a concept that allows manufacturers to hide their incompetence to finish all project goals under given dead-line.
Or as a concept that allows them not to invest too much resources if products doesn't live up to projected sales success.

Good guy, bad guy, the same thing. Intensity is what counts. Sometime you have to be bad to be good.

What we witness here in this forum is a form of social parasitism: interspecific kleptoparasitisam.

Calling people who work on these things incompetent is really not OK.
These guys are squeezing a lot of tech and innovation into a very small and light and extremely cheap box while facing a cacophony of impatient consumers whith unrealistic and contradicting expectations.

Took a look at the screen shot of the ROP app.
No monitor, good control of settings.
But I didn't see any control of focus.
There is an area at the bottom that looks like you can trigger the function buttons? -- So perhaps some basic focus functionality could be added there? Might be worth a try.

Maybe if Mitch from Panasonic is following this thread he might see if
some form of image preview is possible using the ROP App, much like the one for the GH5.
Having the ability to frame and actually see a preview of your image, plus the ability
to use the one touch focus would eliminate the need for a wired/wireless monitor set-up
for smaller event coverage. For me this is one of the standout features of the GH5.
Having the ability to preview and control the settings from my ipad is a big deal (for me)

Pus I think the C200 and FS5II has or will have this function.

Does the C200 have this? When I looked, I couldn't even find wifi in the C200, only wired ethernet. wifi Browser Remote on the C100mk2 is extremely handy and can monitor control most things including focus. FS5 has a similar function but is very limiting since it locks out many functions. The C100mk2 version is definitely more useful and useable, not I'm not sure many other C-series cameras have it.

Every camera should have this and include monitoring and focus control along with exposure.

Yes, the C200 has built-in Wi-Fi, no dongle needed, unlike the C300 MKII. It works well but is only about 12-15 fps so the timing is off comparing what you see to what the camera is recording. Not responsive enough to ride focus on a moving subject but good enough for lock off camera focusing. It's not a bad way to remotely control the camera, you can change most of the parameters and it's not an app, any device with a browser can control it.

Seems like it'd be a good idea to wait for new side grips since it sounds like they might be doing a full recall and exchange of all the side grips unless you get a new shipment...

I was about to order but worried about the grip issue and now it looks like it's better to wait since the fix is imminent. Better to get camera fully operational in a week or two than buy now and have to do the hassle of a grip exchange probably having to be without the grip for a week or two...

Release a body-only version while they're at it too...drop the LCD, mic and grip (I'm assuming you can control the menu with buttons on the camera).

$5845.

Sorry, not quite. Dynamic Range is determined by the space between the white clip point and the level at which an exposure signal can no longer be represented. The noise can protrude to different degrees throughout the sensitivity range, and there are some systems that mitigate or avoid noise better than others. With signal gains it is possible to raise the level at which signal can be represented at the bottom of the range, but this invariably also raises the white clip point, so there is little to no change in Dynamic Range. In fact often it becomes truncated.

ISO is determined by the point of middle grey that provides the best range of Dynamic Range with the least amount of apparent noise. The EVA1 captures 8 stops under and 6 stops over of DR at both native ISOs of 800 and 2500. On the VariCams the DR is 8 under / 6.5 over.
