I wonder about using this camera.. that is what could make me excited about it!

The pictures look fine, 10bit log, job done basically - the rest is up to the user unless there are specific horror problems.

BUT using it..??

My FS7 has no cache record (well it does but gets forgotton when you change menu items)

My FS7 has no 180FPS (well it does but I have to exit PAL enter NTSC and swap cards)

My FS7 has no LUTs (well it does but they get forgotton)

My FS7 doesnt have 4k (well it does but to get to 150p from that is too slow..)

Simply If I cant access something in two clicks (on a RnG shoot) it does not get used on a shoot so it does not exist.

What features exist on the panny.

And it does (in most cases) comes down to having it in your own hands, with lens (and adding an EVF or External Monitor), to get a proper feel and use of the product. Then of course, working with the footage........

I would be curious on how many of those night shots were ISO 2500. See quite a bit of noise in the blacks but it also looks like it may just be YouTube's compression.

Never went above 2500 and usually kept it around 1600, down from 2500 base iso for night ext's.
Daylight scens were as low iso as possible because internal ND is limited. Added Schneider pola for some shots, and Firecrest ND to keep shooting stop around f/ 2.0

Thanks for info Bill! This is helpful to know.

What lenses did you shoot with?

Any chance you'd be willing to humor all of us here with an alternative grade?

Bill what would you say to a sony fs7 owner who is considering switching to the eva1?

Shot with Zeiss Contax/Yashica lenses, modded by Duclos with Leitax EF mounts.
As for the grade, it's out of my hands for the time being.

You have to get your hands on one for a day, then play with the footage at home.

I only had it for a day, I would have liked to play with the scene files.
It's impressive how well the 8 bit files hold up in VLog, looking forward to the intra frame codec.

Here are 3 very mediocre / under-produced LT pieces that are shot sort of run'n'gun style, natural light, questionable grades, etc. No different or better production values than what's been shared above, maybe worse:

Can't put a finger on it, but in every EVA-1 clip I've seen, well composed, perfectly lit, cinematifcally shot, crop bars added, whatever - there's just a sort of rigid lifelessness to them. Like they are flat. All of these, even semi-slapped together LT clips, just pop with a richness, life, character, smoothness, mojo, whatever.

Am I the only one seeing it?

If I'm not... I think EVA-1 is a great girl who I'm just not in love with...

It's the grading my friend.
They seem flat, because they are.
They almost all show a desire to hold the highlights at the expense of internal contrast.
The blacks arent neutral or matched up either.
I would say that in the hands of a pro colorist they would approach a lot more their bigger siblings.

Let's just say that when DSLR's first hit we had a lot of shallow depth of field stuff.
Now we have "hold the highlight" videos instead.

I hope so! Expanding the midtones out to give more punch, range, and contrast there might give the images a lot more "pop" and dimension.

I'm not so sure that's all it is... but I'd love to see that be the case!

One thing I never understood with the dual ISO is why people are so pumped about it ? It's like have you ever used an a7SII? lol ...even the 5D Mark IV and 1DX Mark II shoot high-quality video into the thousands.

Take a look at what happens to the A7SII dynamic-range when you raise the ISO...

A7SII_DR.jpg

...With DUAL Native ISO the dynamic-range is roughly the SAME at both the low native ISO and the high native ISO, which is something you DO NOT see with most DSLR / MirrorLess cameras.

For sure...that's common knowledge.

But it would be good to point out that the test chart is coming from a photography company and that the native ISO of the camera in S-Log2/3 is 1600 for filmmaking.

So you're STARTING at 1600.

So with the a7SII you have 14 stops (or whatever it is) at 1600. With the EVA1 you have 14 stops (or whatever it is) at 2500, but in practice around 1600.

So is there a difference?

A jump from 1600 to 3200 is losing less than a quarter of a stop on the a7sII. Would your eyes be able to analyze the change?

So let's say that the DR at 3200 is 13.5 stops. And the EVA1 at 2500 is a perfect 14 stops. Would you choose half a stop over a much cleaner picture?

From 3200 to 6400, it looks like about one stop. What do you think? Visible in an environment where you'll already be using a 6400 ISO to begin with?

We are talking about SUPER CLEAN IMAGES at 6400 no matter what the DR would be vs. what the EVA1 can do at 6400.

There is absolutely no comparison.

But the main point of my post was about low-light performance based on previous remarks about noise from the EVA1. I never argued that you're not losing dynamic range with major changes... (In a post before that I mentioned how the EVA1 is probably not losing any visible DR from 800-1600.)

---

I don't mean to rant, but the chart can be misleading to those who may not know (at least 3 based on the up-votes) because you will never shoot at ISO 100 on the a7sII unless you use a non-LOG picture profile in which you'd already be losing dynamic range.

So if I personally had a choice, I will take super clean images at 6400 any day rather than a mediocre dual-ISO feature that appears to be struggling around 2500.

Except it's not the same, ISO2500 seems to clearly be a bit noisier... frankly it doesn't seem like Panasonic's Dual Native ISO performance is all that different from other manufacturers' analog gain amplifier performance, but we shall learn more about this soon.
