But then it wouldn't be 2lbs EVA-1 Extreme, it would be a 15lbs when kitted with essentials behemoth. I almost bought the Varicam LT but didn't after demoing it. I know some of this is limited to what is possible with 2017 tech but if they did offer an EVA-1 extreme with those specs in that footprint/weight at an additional price, I would spring!

Not too early...RED cameras are like tic-tac boxes and shoot 8K.
Someone can always do it...just depends on who's making money and how much.
2.4lbs heavier is 2x the weight... makes a huge difference handheld. And the stripped down options are tough on LT the lightweight batteries don't last long and then you have to have a ton of batteries, too. LT is great camera just hard for OMB... it's why I'm more excited about cameras like the FS5, GH5, and obviously the EVA-1. And why I have no complaint about the price! (Actually that was my initial point - the price is worth it, and I would even pay a premium for even more power at this size / weight, if/when technologically feasible).
You want quiet fans or 8K/60p, 4K/120p...always a compromise in life, ha.
Oh come on sttratos, that's such a pigeon holed perspective. It's true for some business models, and some projects, but not "better" business models. And Panasonic knows it too - it's why the EVA-1 is built and marketed as a small lightweight camera. It's why compromises were made at all - to keep the size and weight down. Apparently that's a marketable priority, and your quite mistaken if you think the only people after powerful cameras in a small/lightweight package are too poor to afford something bigger.
Did I say it was a better business model?
To me it looks like you just don't have the business model to support something at the price of a Varicam... The LT is not too big. It's only too big if you are a no budget guy
I'd sure say it was implied, unless of course being a "no budget guy" is better than having the business model to support something at the price of a Varicam.
No offense taken, given that I'm quite thrilled with my business model and lifestyle - I'm merely pointing out that the implication that $8000 smaller/lighter cameras have no place unless you have no budget is as hilariously inaccurate as stating that something like a scaled down Varicam is only too big or heavy if you have "osteoporosis or something".
...Not even now with the Alexa mini I would think they all switch. But they have the budget to shoot this way.
You can pick 5 lenses for the EVA-1. What do you pick and why?
Here's my current leading 5, please critique:
1. Sigma 18-35
2. Zeiss Milvus 35
3. Zeiss Milvus 50
4. Canon 70-200 L
5. Milvus Macro? Milvus 15? Milvus 21? Milvus 85? Canon 24-70 Zoom?
Well, I said the same thing before the camera specs came out - it should be positioned in the $5K-$6K space. Now that the specs have come out, I still say the same thing. There are many factors that make up a price, but one of them is the competition, or what's available the same price bracket. And here you must take into account used gear. You can get the FS7 used in the $5K-$6K range. And there are other options out there. I think asking for almost $8K street is a bit much given the competition. If this cam wiped the floor with other cameras in the same price range (including used), that would be one thing, but as it stands, it is my opinion, that $5K-$6K street price is a much better competitive pricing. I hope Panasonic has thought through carefully what the optimal pricing is long term, not just short term - if you can get more people locked into your brand, even if you make slightly less money in the very short term, it makes sense to price it lower. You also want to entice people from other brands, and to break them out, you offer a great cam at a great price, not just a great cam at a big price, if you want to go for the long term. Sure, a pro who makes money hand over fist, won't blink an eye if it's $3K one way or another, but this is meant to hit a bigger market segment than just top paid pros. And those people are more price sensitive. I vote for $5K-$6K street as the sweet spot. Sure, I'd prefer the camera free, in exchange for a warm handshake, but I'm trying to be realistic here. I'm not asking for the moon here below $3K. The $5K-$6K range is perfect.
I know you meant to say it, but EF-mount lenses (not EF lenses. As I rarely use Canon lenses, but often use EF-mount)I'm also not a big fan of investing in Sony E-mount lenses. I'm sure they are great lenses but it is a very closed lens system with really no support outside of Sony cameras. EF lenses are now the unofficial industry standard like it or not and that makes the EVA a much more realistic options for Canon DSLR shooters, Canon cinema shooters, Varicam shooters, m43 shooters who use a focal reducer and BMD cinema shooters. So yeah if anybody is coming from any one of those backgrounds the EVA makes a heck of a lot more sense than a FS7.
Well, the Red MX's were supposedly not true 4K. I can tell from shooting in 2K mode, that it is not very sharp. All of these Bayer Pattern sensors require larger resolution to mix down to true 4K or ability to crop without noticeable blurriness. The EVA is almost a 6k camera for the price of a 4k FS7. Oversampling is a big deal and can have a large impact on the quality of a 4k delivery. Its part of the reason why RED and BMD has moved beyond just a straight 4k sensor when it comes to 4k delivery and why ARRI is even now moving towards 6k.
Variam LT has a ton of other distinguishing features, from its build itself, to the remote screen, to 4K raw at 120fps, proxy recording, more robust codecs, PL mount, etc. The clientelle [EVA-1 vs Varicam LT] really are two different bases, and a lot more separates them than just budget. I wouldn't buy a VaricamLT if it was half the price... It's a beast, and does not serve the OMB or independent filmmakers well. And the EVA-1 is missing out way too much on the very high end to serve the LT customers well
