EVA1: Panasonic AU-EVA1! Announcement and latest updates

Is Panasonic talking to Leica, Olympus, or Fujinon about developing a power zoom similar to the Sony 28-135mm or 18-110 f/4's?

Would be more than happy with a pair of all-mechanical 3:1, or a 4:1, T2.8 parfocal zooms priced similarly to Fuji's MK(s), or Canon's hybrids. As long as the backfocus was adjustable I imagine they'd sell well, & not only to EVA owners. Be great to see Panasonic enter this arena.

I couldn't possibly comment on such a question.

Hmmmm...

Fuji claims they were only able to produce the MK series so inexpensively due to the short Focal Flange Distance of the mirrorless lens mounts. Imagine this mostly applies to the 18-55mm.

Duclos thought he might be able to adopt them to EF, but likely without the Macro, &/or Backfocus, feature (don't recall the exact details).

Of all the objections to the EF mount I can remember exactly 1 person advocating for a M4/3 sensor...everyone else wants a m4/3 mount and loves the s35 sensor...the continuous lecturing re the S35 sensor of owners of m4/3 systems (not including you here!) seems to deem it necessary to patiently explain to people using M4/3 cameras how superior s35 is, which is of course true and also a completely unnecessary bit of information...there's no great reveal there...everyone knows this...what's pertinent for me in this mount, is I own over 30 FF and S35 lenses...all pristine and carefully chosen...and in there lies the beauty of the mount...the wonderful collection of glass available...again...I understand this system does not suit your style of shooting, but it's used by many....including professionals...the M4/3 system is not for fans, and Canon or S35 for pros...I worked with one of the best Director/DPs for years...all on Arriflexs35, and any time a camera went on his shoulder it was a s16 Aaron..so for me, the mount does not work...I understand Panasonic's marketing choice...and not that it means much for them, but with this mount, they won't get my business

An M43 mount would mean that people would try to put an M43 lens on the camera, and most would not cover the sensor.

Canon makes a pair of really nice Compact Zooms in exactly these specs, available in PL or EF (or interchangeable if you use the modified versions from Duclos or AbelCine). But at $20K+ each most people probably won't be putting them on the EVA1. The great cine lenses you want do exist, but they are expensive. There are new zooms from Fuji, Zeiss and many others, and most if not all of them are available in interchangeable mount or directly in EF. But they are on a different price scale to what you may be used to.

Perhaps a company other than Rokinon will seize this opportunity to jump into the EF pool to manufacture more affordable manual lenses. Maybe Veydra can come up with an EF version of their lenses. The Veydra lens would be a good match keeping the size and weight to a minimum. I really don't know of any reputable company currently providing an "affordable" manual alternative to the current crop of auto EF mount lenses. I realize that affordable is a relative term... manual EF lenses are on a short list, no?

Your best bet, imo, is to do what I did and get a nice set of Zeiss Contax primes and put an ef adapter on them.

I have a set and they are stellar.

Rokinon isn't affordable enough for you?

Besides my Canon glass, I have a set of SLR Magic APO Hyperprime Cine lenses, T2.1 25/50/85mm PL-mount. I bought a EF-PL adapter on eBay. The lenses were designed to work with such an adapter on something like a 5D, and resolves up to 6K. They are affordable and will be a perfect fit for EVA1.

Until a sub-$5000 fast zoom for EF comes along (or PL that also works adapted to EF) then Ima use these primes plus my Canon stills zooms...which are L-class and very nice...just not really intended for motion picture use. But, I only use zoom for composition before shooting. I rarely zoom for effect while shooting.

I may have missed this, but do we have much additional information about the audio? Are there quick switches for phantom power/line input? Will it be possible to record 4 channels of audio (2 XLR + 2 internal mic channels)?

I am sincerely hoping for the 4 channels...

In my opinion the reason that the new panny has that little red trim is kind of obvious - meant to match with Canon L lenses.
It's pretty clear who the market is for this camera.

I took pictures of all sides of the model at CineGear Expo. I don't see switches for phantom power or mic/line. I note that other switches are missing as well, which leads me to believe that features will be menu driven.

Ughh, I hope not. That is the one fatal design flaw of the Varicam LT, really the only thing about it that I truly dislike. Any solo shooter, OMB, quick moving doc crew needs physical audio controls, easily accessible at all times. That would be strange because every Panasonic camera I have owned (half a dozen of them over the years) has had pretty nice manual audio controls in a decently accessible location. Mitch, if you read this, if it is true that the audio controls for the EVA1 are buried in menus, please reconsider, petition Taka and the desgn team to not do this, even if it delays the release. Access to phantom, line/mic and levels HAVE to be on physical controls in order for this camera to succeed with solo shooters, event, documentary shooters, anyone who works with and without a sound mixer. I can tell you that any of the sound mixers I work with would also come to hate it, they are always adjusting and readjusting the camera levels as we shoot through a day.

I agree that physical buttons are better. Had the audio level panpots and auto/manual level switches been in menus, I would have boo'd, as well. However, it would seem that Panasonic is imagining users will set their mics, get phantom power/line/etc done in the menus and then run off and shoot, needing the most basic physical buttons, and arguably the most important ones, being the level controls, where they should be: on the smart side of the body. Everything else can be setup beforehand. It's enough control for me for the camera, or for scratch. When I want really nice audio, I have a field recorder. The camera records scratch, at that point. The preamps on-camera won't be as good as the ones in the dedicated audio device. I think for run-and-shoot situations, having physical volume level controls is the most important thing...everything else should have been setup beforehand. Because, honestly, when I shoot like that, I setup the mics once and then never touch any other audio control except for the levels. Doing the setup in menu, so that the physical buttons remain sparse, is completely fine for me. All else gets the field recorder...or a sound guy. Having all the audio control on the body would be nice, but not essential, for me. Not having the audio levels would have pissed me off, tho.

Rokinon is absolutely affordable glass... I was researching native EF mount lenses and have discovered that there is a significant jump in pricing/quality from the "entry level" Rokinons to the next tier of native EF cinema type lenses. Not unlike the hole that Panasonic just filled between GH5 and Varicam LT. I might need to research more... however the gap really widens when looking for faster T2.8 and below.
