If its not too late, a positive locking EF mount would go a long way
(Or interchangeable mount but thats unrealistic)

A couple reasons. First, the VariCam sensor is very expensive to manufacture. It would have greatly raised the price of the camera. We were able to learn a bunch from the design & manufacture process on that sensor to develop the new 5.7K model. Second, the VariCam sensor uses a lot of power. We would have had to beef up the camera processing in order to handle the draw.
Ok good to know! Just sad it's not the famous varicam sensor :( Canon was able to lend the C700 sensor to the C200 even as a small cut. Running it on vmount or gold mount would have been fine as well, no proprietary batteries needed. Well I do hope it can match the ISO sensitivity. Thanks for the answers Mitch!

I would have wanted an interchangeable mount system. But I don't think most folks would have expected a dual-native ISO with both true VLog and V.Gamut at this price point either, with 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 internal and full 5.7k raw output. So I guess at some point they have to meet their targeted price point, and I guess an interchangeable lens mount wasn't practical for this particular camera at this time at this price point.

Which is why EVA1 will [most likely] be my next cinema camera.

I'll bet you the C100 sensor and color matches the C300/200 better than the GH5 will match the Varicam color science of the EVA1. You're right about 4K of course. I was strictly speaking to having a matching system. I like Panasonic's direction more than Canon as well, but I'm not sure the GH5 will turn out to be such a great match for the EVA1, given the sensor differences, the color differences, the ISO differences, etc. Sure, 4k.....yep.

I think the GH5 will be much closer than you think. I don't think it is an accident that it uses a similar over 5k to 4k down conversion process and the same 10bit 4:2:2 400mbps all-I recording format to SD cards. Both cameras were imagined around the same time and I think there was a lot more effort to make the GH5 match the EVA1 than you think there was. Besides unless you record externally on the c100 I find the color very limiting due to the 35mbps 8bit 4:2:0 h264 recording format. Even if the GH5 out of the box isn't a 100% perfect color match with the EVA1 it will be close enough and with 10bit 400mbps 4:2:2 color will hold up better when graded.

We will see for sure later this year just how well the cameras stack up together. The potential is there however and makes complete sense for Panasonic to go this route and I really think they have. The GH5 has more pro features then it really should at that price point and I think the reason was to complement the new EVA1. Of course I could be off my rocker but having worked in marketing and now working in user experience design and conducting focus groups and user research studies it would be a sure move for them to make to stand out with a unique positioning in the industry. Nobody else can really claim a solid 100% 10bit 4k family from a $2,000 DSLR all the way up to a $20,000 + cinema camera.

Mitch- Will the SDI and HDMI both be active at the same time? Something that has bugged me (lack of) using the FS5.

David

I'm not Mitch, of course, but I've read from different sources that both HDMI and SDI will export at the same time, even in 4K.
I'm also an FS5 owner and I was surprised when I couldn't do this on my camera. Maybe I'm not doing something right, I dunno.

I really, really like the Timecode in/out on the EVA1. This ability is very important to me. If the internal coded is as strong as I hope, this will probably be my next camera.

But please, Panasonic, make a loupe for the monitor. Don't wait for someone else to do it.

I was the only person who applauded in the room when this feature was announced.

I'm applauding right with you. This, above all, may convince me to switch to the EVA. And I love the name, and yes, even the red stripe.

edit - this was regarding the timecode port.

Zacuto will likely have a loupe available when EVA ships, but Panasonic should design the LCD's support bracket so it's strong enough to handle the additional weight.

Panasonic should at least include a loupe. Size, weight, features and ergonomics look good for "classic verite" style documentary shooting. Cinema designation or not, I'll bet the EVA-1 will be used hand held/shoulder supported as much as on a tripod. Does Panasonic really expect potential buyers to shell out an additional $1,500-$2,000 for an EVF that should have been included in the package?

Very disappointing (to say the least) marketing decision. Deal breaker for me...2k buys some nice EF lenses.

I'm not Mitch, of course, but I've read from different sources that both HDMI and SDI will export at the same time, even in 4K.

I've seen at least one interview where Mitch said both HDMI and SDI will be able to simultaneously output 4K. No technical details beyond that at this time, though.

I think if you announced it was spec X and then improved on it you'd only recieve a positive response from customers. I don't think it would be falsely labelled as the old spec.

Also, curious what constitutes a sensor being manufactured as a Varicam sensor?

On a forum such as DVXuser, people such as yourself pay close attention to the specs, the latest news, and any changes therein. But plenty of people only tune in to developments on an occasional basis. They will only learn details on a product at the moment they have a reason to consider it. If we gave a spec now, for many people that would be it and they would never check in again to see if we updated it. For them that spec would forever be the final spec of the camera. So we don't like to publish until we have a final number.

As for the VariCam sensor, there are a few things and a number are proprietary. But the Dual Native ISO technology is part of it.

Mitch a few questions please.
First off I think Panasonic have done a great job with this camera,
and it will be top of my list when upgrading.

Will it have AF when using EF lenses and if so can you say anything about it ?
Will it have AF tracking ?
Can it power EF Zoom lens and will the handgrip control this feature?
Does it have it a touchscreen ?
Can you touch to focus?
Does it have wifi and Bluetooth and remote control via an app ?
What type of IS does it have ?

Great job Panasonic! I'm really looking forward to seeing the full feature list.

The information provided so far is what we are prepared to share at this time. Panasonic will release additional information as we approach the EVA1's release.

What would have been fun is to have cornered the lead engineer, Taka, who was clearly very proud of his camera. Marketing and Sales people keep engineers away from customers because engineers are notorious for being honest and straightforward with answers. So we had a good opportunity to learn more if we could have talked to him. But I suspect Panasonic Marketing would have shielded Taka away before we had a chance. Did anyone talk to Taka?

That's pretty funny, as if we keep Taka locked up in a test lab somewhere. He was the lead on determining what specs we were prepared to share at this time.

That's why the best cameras from Arri, RED, Sony and Panasonic uses higher voltage. To do processing, among other things, in the best possible way. A 7,2V camera is so consumer.

Nope. It's because it is more efficient to store and discharge a larger amount of power at a higher voltage than a lower voltage. If you use a lower voltage and need more power then you have to draw higher amps, which means thicker cabling. In my home I have some MR-16 light fixtures and some GU-10 ones. I have MR-16 12v bulbs and GU-10 120v bulbs, and all of them are 50w, putting out the same amount of light.

I would love to see an Alexa being run on 7,2V. Nuff said.

That is a dumb thing to say. A 7.2v battery running through a transformer could easily run an Alexa. The battery would simply have to be large enough to deliver the amperage required for the Alexa's 100w+ power draw. EVA1 will not draw nearly that much power.

Fair enough, thanks for answering all our questions Mitch.

Once again, you are showing you have no knowledge of electronics design and are trying to insinuate shortcomings from naive statements. An Alexa could easily be designed with a 7.4v battery.

BTW, EVA1 accepts a 7.2v battery but also has a 12v power input. So with a 3rd party plate adapter one could power the camera off of a 12v battery.

Best of both worlds. One of the design goals of EVA1 was to build a camera with as tiny a footprint as possible for use in gimbals, drones and the like. That meant a physically small battery as well, and we had a choice of creating an all-new 12v small-sized battery or utilizing the 7.2v batteries we already make. Many people own a bunch of those batteries already, so why make them invest in new batteries and chargers?

Panasonic knows a bit about batteries. We're one of the largest manufacturers of them in the world. Most of the v-mount and three-stud batteries out there have Panasonic cells within. And the giant Gigafactory Tesla is building? That's a 50/50 split project with Panasonic. I think we have this power thing under control.
