Mitch, do you personally - off the record in regards to your current position - think it's a good idea to wait possibly 6+ months to ship the camera?

I understand it may not be ready, and even if it was, a plan is a plan, but don't you think half a year is kind of a long time?

If Canon and Sony have new cameras in the 4th quarter that may compete with Panasonic's new offering, wouldn't it be beneficial to get it out as soon as possible? I just always feel that so many people would purchase a new camera immediately (even if it was purely on impulse) if it was available shortly after the announcement.

Of course it could be the best camera ever made, but I think many companies lose steam if they wait too long.

I posted this on Panasonic Pro Europe's IG:

So, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess it's [basically] an AF200: DVX200 body and features, m4/3 lens mount (with Super 35 sensor?), internal 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes (please!) up to DCI 4K, and that flipping LCD has a snap-on loupe. I imagine it'd actually be the same 4/3" sensor in the GH5. Not a Varicam, but would play well with V-log L. 13 stops of dynamic range? Probably aiming to compete with FS5 and 7, and C100-300. Might even be a non-raw competitor to Ursa Mini, and if it's priced lower, all bets are off. :D Whatever this thing is, I am excited. We'll know at Cine Gear Expo...

To rephrase that: does anybody think it's a good idea to become the new BlackMagic of camera annoucements? (and not even that: BM at least gave us all the specs, and a price!)

My guess: it's an af105 with the same sensor and codec of the original af100, but a new button layout; selling for $15000. If that's not the case, please, Panasonic: say otherwise.

That might be in the past. When BM announced the URSA Mini Pro, it was shipping in a week and received a ton of orders based on what I see on the forums.

Not to say making a camera available immediately will guarantee you sales, but it may help.

Looking at the lens, it is definitely a Sigma 24-35mm F2 DG HSM Art. I'm going to venture that is a fixed EF mount. I would imagine it is a M4/3 sensor, however, Panasonic might be alright with letting us have a Super 35 sensor. It's not going to be a Varicam. It's going to be a spiritual successor to the AF100 (or, the AF200). It has the same silhouette as the DVX200, minus the rear EVF and affixed lens. AF100 was basically an HVX200 body. This seems like the logical progression of things. It took forever for a successor to DVX100, and it was announced in 2015. I think this would make sense to announce an AF100 successor (again, either spiritually or a literal AF200), that would share the concept of the DVX200, but with an interchangeable lens and, hopefully, better internal codecs.

I wonder if this new camera has a good AF system, considering all the problems GH5 has. We must wait till the end of May to know more.
To me the AF "problems" are more with the operator than the GH5...would never have an operator on set that could not operate a manual camera lol

There are lots of companies that announce products at a tradeshow which won't be shipping until months later. The whole point is to get you to not buy something else until that product comes along.

Then, there are other products, by the same companies, that are shipping since yesterday. It just depends on what's up. This new camera being teased at a broadcast tradeshow, to be officially announced at a cinema trade show, and shipping later the same year, is not a sign of the times. This isn't how everyone does everything, nor is it indicative of how Panasonic rolls out every product. It's THIS product. Don't buy an Ursa Mini or an FS5 or a JVC whatever...let us tease this product, get your interest going, the specualtion running rampant for a month and change, then when you know what's going on, now you can choose to wait until Fall or go ahead and buy from a competitior. But, hear us out, first. Give us a month. That's what they're most likely saying.

Personally, I'd love an Ursa Mini Pro...unless something better comes along at the same or better price when I'm ready to buy. And, technically, i am doing just fine with my current cameras so I don't want to upgrade my cinema camera until I can afford to do so, and with a product I know will serve mine and my clients' needs. But, I have a cinema camera. I needed to upgrade the video camera I bought in 2010, so I bought the DVX200 (again, I would LOVE a cinema camera in a DVX200 body). Then I needed cinema glass, and then a nicer field audio recorder, etc. Late 2017/early 2018, I'm looking to upgrade the cinema camera I bought in 2013. Ursa Mini Pro has been the top contender. Who knows about this new Panasonic? I like Panasonic very, very much. So, even if it doesn't do internal raw, if everything else is very strong, my choice could definitely go in Panasonic's direction.

Super exciting. Too bad I can't be in Vegas this week trying to peak through the cloth! lol

Indeed. The only time to use AF is when you're shooting a selfie. On a stabilizer? Nope. Use a remote focus unit like you're supposed to. Focusing requires a human touch. You can't program AF to be creative or understand human psychology. You gotta have a human focus puller. That's it.

IMO the Varicam LT already punches well above it's weight class in every respect...it's a camera that can arguably compete with cameras more than twice it's price....I suspect Panasonic will keep this new camera's price very competitive and use the same philosophy image wise as they do with the LT...i.e....an image quality that goes far beyond the price point of this camera...the JVC m4/3 mount with a s35 adjustable sensor that can use Panasonic native m4/3 glass as well as any other brands of lenses would be great and of course XLR and built in ND...Mitch...am I getting close here or still no comment?
Edit: SSD for media instead of SD

This is exactly what Panasonic did with the GH5, and I think it's a brilliant strategy to slowly build up market demand for their products. The GH5 has pretty much been a home run for Panasonic because of this strategy, and I think this new camera might do the same by following the same playbook.

...whilst also LOSING business for Panasonic's competitors.

It'd be nice if they took the Canon approach and had the Varicam sensor trickle down into the lower end. C100 got the C300 sensor, until they got to the C300 II, but then C100 Mk3 might get it. Sony's F5 sensor ended up in the FS7, I think. Maybe Panasonic can pull a coup, because the GH5 sensor isn't really worth using for a cinema camera and it's a Sony sensor anyways.

Even if he thought it was a bad idea, there is no way he can possibly say so in this forum. The Cinema Product Manager saying "Officially, I think it's a splendid idea, but personally it's a stupid one some marketing manager in Japan thought up over too much sake" ends poorly for him :)

I understand it may not be ready, and even if it was, a plan is a plan, but don't you think half a year is kind of a long time?

NAB is the largest platform of it's kind... much like, say, the Chicago Auto Show, E3, and CES. If you're going to release anything in the next 6-ish months, that's the time to announce it.

Just got this info about the new camera. It will have a S35 sensor and 14 stops of dynamic range. 4k up to 60fps. 1080p up to 120fps. All the usual stuff like ND, SDI/HDMI out. The body is very light weight at about 1 kg. Media used will be SDXC cards with dual slot capacity.

The camera pars can be broken down and the shape of the camera is a mix of C100 and FS5. As is the price in the league of a C100 mkII.
