EVA1: Panasonic AU-EVA1! Announcement and latest updates

A $500 APS-C DSLR can use the exact same sensor and DSP as a $2000 APS-C DSLR and yet people still buy the $2000 version because of the features and capabilities.

...Also, two cameras that use the identical sensor are not guaranteed to produce the same image. The electronics package in each camera and how it processes the sensor image can radically change the finished result. So often you are paying for a lot more than just the sensor with the higher priced camera.

Care to provide any evidence of smaller cameras having less processing power? That may be true when talking about a body the size of a DSLR but the EVA1 is still a pretty decent size.

I don't know if it was in this thread or not, but at one point Mitch mentioned that the Varicam LT had about 3x the processing power of the EVA1.

Like anything, you get what you pay for, but that doesn't mean the image from the finished EVA1 won't come close to matching the Varicam LT.

...I am curious to hear what brand new camera Sttratos would recommend at the EVA1 price point ?

Yes I was going to mention that. Sony also says all the time camera X can't do what larger camera X can because it doesn't have enough processing. And the size difference is not DSLR to full size camera. FS5, FS7, F5, F55 and F65 owners will know what I'm talking about.

Having been a member of this forum for quite some time, the excitement for any new cam can be pretty easily measured by the number of posts and the level of squabble. 267 pages and counting. I wonder how that compares in number to say the introduction of the HVX200. At that time, the big gripe was about the cost of P2. But everyone bought one because the only other cam that was even close was the standard def XL2. Now, the camera market is flooded with awesome choices. But the grumbles continue because the manufacturers don't build cameras to do exactly what you personally need. They try to fill a market and beat the competition on either features, price, or build quality. But really, considering how many choices there are, you all ought to be able to find something you like, then go make it as good as you are capable of.

P.S. This thread has 230,634 views.

It's interesting to see just how excited people were for the DVX200...all they needed to do was chop the lens off of that thing back then...SMH.

Boy, I post in the evening and don't come back for a day and y'all sure get in a tizzy.

No one should be insulting anyone or down voting anyone. We all have different perspectives and should treat one another as professionals. Let's try to relax a bit, okay?

Perhaps I should have said that the EVA1 is designed to intercut well with the VariCams. Maybe that would have made some people feel better.

There are a lot of features the VariCam LT has over the EVA1, just as there are a lot of features the VariCam 35 has over the VariCam LT. You choose your tool for your needs. One camera does not negate the value of another.

If we try hard, we can push this thread to over 3000 posts before the camera launches. I'm looking forward to Neol's footage!!

... It would be foolish to expect Alexa performance or any other camera in that higher segment. So if someone tells you will get high end quality from a middle ground product would you believe that?
EVA1 should have much superior resolution than Alexa, even its latest iteration, about 20 MPX vs. 5.7 (open gate). Six years is a long time in the electronics/computer business.

... I hear people say (write) it's a great time to be in the business and comment on all of the choices we have...but I don't think we've moved much in the past 5 years (and some of us had a similar conversation a few weeks ago). Everyone is paying for hardware or something else, but not image quality...
I remember exchanging a few opinions about the BMD Cinema Camera around 2013 with one of the NFS writers, who was shooting something with it and complaining about the file sizes in Raw. And P2 and SxS costs were astronomical back then too. Now, one can get compressed 4K Raw onto a EgoDisk CFast 2.0 card and have a stack of them in his pocket.

PS. Also, the LED lighting has gotten way cheaper, way brighter and way more CRI'ter.

BTW, while this is a particularly active spot, it is by no means a bubble for the interest in EVA1. We have huge preorders of the camera, including from areas that have no clue that DVXuser exists and wouldn't care if they did.

I don't remember if SSDs were as expensive as other media, but I don't recall 2.5K RAW that bad of a hit back then as much as 4K RAW was the following year.

Obviously those SSDs and SD cards dropped like crazy, so it's all manageable now.

CFast is still a problem but has slowly dropped in price over the years. Luckily the 3:1, 4:1 ratios with 4K RAW make it somewhat sustainable.

---

Lots of technological advancements over the years everywhere...but image quality hasn't jumped much IMO.

---

I feel like the BMPC, C300 Mark II and FS7 could play with the C200 and EVA1.

...but image quality hasn't jumped much IMO.

And this is just interesting to me because I just wonder how will it get noticeably better.

When we started watching HD on HD screens, we saw the difference and became used to it.

I'm not exactly consuming all content in 4K at all times, but a lot of these cameras just look the same as others in the past years...except when I go to the movies to watch a film from Hollywood.

P.S. When you start quoting yourself, it's time to stop posting for the night, haha.

IMO, an average screen size is about to make a huge upward jump. TCL just priced a 4K 75" HDR set for $2,000, Roku streaming included.

Also, my cable/internet company just began to advertise their 1Gb service. More importantly, 100 Mbps and 250 Mpbs prices almost look affordable and that means 5K/6K streaming isn't that far away either.

You may indeed have other sources, but I would not be so quick to discount DVXUser's reach.

DVXUser has over 121,000 registered members, and probably 10x that many lurkers. This very thread has over 230,000 views. I have little doubt that DVXUser is far and away the most concentrated, active group of interested EVA1 prospective purchasers worldwide.

There might be other groups with interested purchasers maybe (like CML, I guess) but -- I very strongly doubt they would have anywhere near the number of interested purchasers for a Panasonic camera, in this price range, as DVXUser has.

DVXUser has been the primary outlet for information on Panasonic AG-series camcorders since the introduction of the DVX100 back in 2003. We may not be home to *every* Panasonic buyer, but among those in the under-$10,000 price bracket I'd dare say we're home to a whole hell of a lot of 'em...

Barry, got you covered on the last page with stats.

Part of my application for the entry-level moderator position. :badputer:

Perhaps I should have said that the EVA1 is designed to intercut well with the VariCams.

Now that is a VERY different proposition.

I can see that, considering they have been intercuting even 5D with film and Alexa for stunt shots for years in Hollywood. That's a much easier thing to accomplish and also defines what the Varicam reference means much better.

And superior resolution means superior image?

One would have thought the fact the Alexa is still the industry standard and being chosen over 4K and 6K cameras would have put this thought to rest long ago.

It's obvious Osslund was talking about image quality.

Easily. If you don't consider resolution even the F3 could. I agree with you. Image quality hasn't jumped much if at all. Otherwise how to explain the 8 years old Alexa and 9 years old F35 still beating current cameras?

Yeah but since at least around here Netflix and Amazon have problems sometimes to keep even a HD stream going without glitches, I'm not too worried about getting anything bigger than what I have now.

Mitch, and all, wow, took me about 4-5 days to get through this, was a discussion, and full of info.

My current situation and then question, I sent a load of equipment to an online store to do my traditional upgrade process... in discussing cameras on reddit, the EVA came up, which brought me here.

"End of October" and with Mitch's recent word about preorders, I am wondering if there are any more specific info that can be had...

Is that October 31?? And will there be a supply?

As right now, I am down to just 1 camera to shoot... I don't want to rush into the next one, but if I can't get my hands on one of these until December... Ill proceed with my original plans...
