EVA1: Panasonic AU-EVA1! Announcement and latest updates

I got my hands on the EVA1 last week at CVP in London. My initial reaction was positive. I shoot docs, so form factor is very important and nearly all of my work is handheld. Very impressed with weight and feel of the camera in the hand and I'm a big fan already of Pansonic's colour science.

I liked the focus squares, they work very well but disappointed by the tiny waveform monitor in the corner of the screen. In a verite situation in tricky outdoor lighting conditions where you have a second or maybe two to nail your exposure before you miss the shot, this is going to be a major problem. It's the only reason why I haven't put in a pre-order already.

I'm sure, like all cameras it has zebras, why not use them?

A waveform is less useful in run and gun anyway.

This video about EVA1 was removed by Youtube some weeks ago before the three short were published, now it's again online.
I'm not sure if it's legit, maybe Mitch could confirm it.

According to ProAV - "Panasonic issued a worldwide hold" on any further footage from the camera until the sensor is finished.

Looks like we won't be seeing anything for a while. Also seems to indicate that footage filmed from samples, such as Noel Evans footage, may not be allowed to be released? Mitch?

SO what's the deal wiht the ISO. In 800 native, are you losing dynamic range by going down to 200? Why did Derango dial the 2500 down to 1600? Do you want to align with whichever native ISO is "closest" numbers wise to the value you want to shoot with. Thanks.

Dialing down reduces noise so basically 2500 down to 1600 less noise than 800 up to 1000, at least in theory on the Varicam LT many people go to 5000 to dial down to 3000 with less noise.

Mitch, is there any chance Panasonic will release an ungraded, ProRes download of select clips?

Would love to play with some of the footage. I understand keeping the high ISO fire scenes in house. But how about a few outdoor + cave shots from Superstition, and a few from iceland? So people can try different grades, softening, etc. and view the footage in their NLE and monitors here? May set to rest some worries.

This was a big positive regarding Luke Neuman's footage samples from GH5 that had a net positive impact.
I think if any such footage is released it will be from new, different material. Stuff shot with the finished sensor firmware.

I can understand your feelings about the waveform. May I note that there are also zebras and a spot meter available?

Noel's work was done in communication with Panasonic Australia.

Whenever you move away from a Native ISO you are going to cut into the available dynamic range. For instance, setting the EVA1 to Native 800 ISO and then gaining down to 400 ISO effectively means that you are overexposing by one stop and then darkening everything to compensate. By overexposing you lose one available stop at the top of the range before highlights would clip, but it also means that the very bottom of the exposure range is getting pushed down into blackness when you compensate the overall brightness. So you go from 14 stops of DR to 13, but you also take the noise at the bottom of exposure and shove it into the black.

This is a fairly common practice to hide any noise in an image, and having a large DR makes it easy because frankly you don't really need all of that range most of the time. But if you only had 7 stops and went down to 6, it would get mighty ugly mighty fast.

Dual Native ISO works the same way, but you get two options for starting points. In Native 800 ISO the gain range is 200-2000 and in Native 2500 ISO the gain range is 1000-25,600. While there is some overlap, generally I would prefer to switch to Native 2500 ISO fairly early, maybe anything above 1250.

If the sensor isn't finished a shipping date this year looks further away.

Hardware is done. It's all about firmware now. We are still on track for late October.

Don't you all remember how the original RED One camera and even the ARRI Alexa went through a series of firmware updates that radically improved the image? We are at a fine tuning stage now.

Good move. If it isn't finished I don't know why they released anything. It's just trouble. Have their not heard about first impressions sticking?
