GH3 Panasonic Announcement Friday Feb 7th (GH4/4K)

Nice finds, John! Very nice videos. One of the interesting things I've seen so far is the photo of the response curve editing screen. I saw at the Texas Media Systems facebook. See link in industry news.

The module doesnt seem to be a must have item but in a studio environment it looks like a great way to get uncompressed 4K out of this beast.

Though the new GH4 4K spec is impressive, the demo video detail doesn't have the WOW of the Sony AX100. Looking forward to additional samples.

… when used with a relatively expensive external 4K video recorder. Not to mention we don't know yet which 4K recorder is compatible.

Of course, with NAB 2014 expo just around the corner, it seems likely the cost of 4K recorders may soon plummet … but said less-expensive 4K recorders might not ship for many months.

But yeah, the GH4 looks like a very nice cam to add to the toolkit. I bought a GH3 last Oct. (paid for itself first time I used it), and if the GH4 price isn't too dear, may pick one up eventually.

Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for my pre-ordered BMPC-4K to start shipping …

What are your thoughts about shooting 4K @ 100mbps vs. 1080p @ 200mbps?

I wonder if for a 1080p finish, the 1080p acquisition ends up being better? I'm not sure what technical or aesthetics come into play in downscaling lower bitrate 4K.

But all else equal, a long-GOP codec will be much more efficient in quality:bitrate terms than one which is I-frame only.

I doubt it's possible to give an easy answer, and so much will depend on the quality of the actual coders - not solely bitrate.

The other thing to consider is the downconversion. How good is the downconversion process itself? Well downconverted HD can give excellent SD, but with poor downconversion it can look poor. 4K to HD will be the same in principle.

A still showing a shoulder-rigged GH4+YAGH:

Edit: I just noticed that the YAGH doesn't have any cables hooked up to it, so it's just taking up space. :)

And a nice looking chart with all the recording formats:

From here: http://www.panasonic.com/global/consumer/lumix/gh4_video_formats/

I hadn't realized before seeing this specific chart that the Cinema 4k (4096x2160) records at true 24p (not 23.98).

Any recorder that can do uncompressed YUV(YCC) 4k 10bit 4:2:2 over 3g-SDI is compatible. Hopefully CD will make the Odyssey 7Q compatible, if it already isn't, although I believe it is. I think it is one of the default input options.

Also, hopefully Atomos and BMD will come out with Ninja/Samurai and Hyperdeck Shuttles, to work with this.

From the confusing configuration of his rig, messiness of his one wire out, and general expression, I'm thinking the cameraman is also just taking up space ;)

I'm a little confused by the charts I've seen, but if I understand correctly... with just the camera or a camera+external recorder...

1080 up to 98 FPS (conformed in camera), and 4K at up to 30fps at 8 bits/100mbs to internal card;
1080 up to 98 FPS(conformed in camera) at 10 bits/200mbs to external recorder via HDMI;
4K is limited to 8 bit/100mbs in-camera recording;

100 mbs bit rates to card; 200 to external recorder? And you'll need the new Panasonic cards in the camera?

If I'm right, that's a lot of bang for your $2k, or your $3k with a Ninja. Could really tide you over if you're not ready for the additional $2k Yahge.

I haven't read a thing about remote control for the GH4
- even an external video trigger?

mcbob: Haha!

Michael: Just look at the chart I linked above. All those bitrates are internal. Up to 200mbps internal to UHS Class 3 (new type) SD cards. The bitrates to external recorders don't have any artificial limits as far as I understand. I've seen a 2.5mm remote control jack mentioned in a few spec sheets I've read.

By the way, here's the pretty Panasonic (UK - haven't found a US equivalent yet) site about the GH4. Give it a while to load: http://www.panasonic.com/uk/consume...-g-compact-system-cameras-dslm/dmc-gh4eb.html

I don't know about a hardware remote control, but it has a new wifi based wireless control system, so you can use your cellphone or tablet.
