GH3 Panasonic Announcement Friday Feb 7th (GH4/4K)

I'm glad the response to what MAY be coming is more reasoned here. People on M 43 rumors are freaking out about no raw, no global shutter....

It is nice to dream about certain features, but in the end we have to realize Panasonic needs to profit and can't give us a Varicam for 2 grand. So far it is sounding like a winner and most of the rumored specs sound plausible and likely from a GH3 successor, which is already one stellar camera for the money.

Yes, but so far (AFAIK) all the most impressive results have been done with none real time encoding. Typically, using a powerful computer to crunch the numbers and taking many times longer than a clip lasts.

If you have a specific hardware encoding chip it speeds the process up dramatically. Computers don't have these types of chips so the encoding is done by the CPU or GPU which is much slower. For example, do you remember how long it took to encode and burn a DVD back in 2002/2003 on a desktop computer? Many times real time yet there were cameras that recorded straight to DVD or mini-DVD because the onboard MPEG2 encoding chip could compress the signal on the fly.

With that being said, I would be surprised if the GH4 recorded in H.265.

With these cameras you do hit a limit when it comes to heat dissipation and processing power, there's a reason why a Varicam is so big in comparison. You'll never fit all that tech into a smaller package, at least until technology progresses. Sony's F5 is about the size limit that you can get out of a camera with performance that high, and it's just a minimalist box.

Wait, the GH4 can shoot 4k video at 96fps?

Probably hyperbole. More likely it can shoot ~96 at smaller resolutions, and 4K at more pedestrian framerates. If it does shoot 4K@96, then it's probably at significantly reduced quality like the FS700's 960fps mode

If it has 4K @96fps shouldn't be able to do higher frame rates at a lower resolution? I really really would love 120fps in 1080.

"Of course, the big news everyone will be talking about with the GH4 is video, specifically its ability to shoot 4K video at a resolution of 4096x2160 pixels and a maximum frame rate of 96fps."

To me, that that doesn't really clarify whether or not the 96fps is at 4k or not. The author could be saying that TWO nice things about the camera are 4k AND 96 fps, not necessarily that the two go together.

They don't. 96 is for full HD only.
