Panasonic AG-AF101 Review

Nice work...Do you know if this camera has a LANC Terminal? Thanks.
LANC is a Sony protocol; Panasonic cameras don't use it. The AF100 does have remote ports for control of focus, iris, and record start-stop, and an indexing remote. It is compatible with DVX, HVX, HPX and HMC cameras' remote controls.

Do you know if ANYONE has actually hooked something to those ports yet and tried the focus with the Panasonic lenses? :) I know you said last time you couldn't find your remote, and you were hoping you hadn't accidentally sold it :)

I tried out the Varizoom Focus Iris controller (VZ-PFI) with the AF100 and the Panasonic 14-140 lens. That combination worked well.

Nice! So I can put my AF100 up on my crane and focus it from down below? The only reason I ask is there has been A LOT of confusion as to what exact focus control we get out of the focus remote port on the back. Initially it was said nothing, then something about autofocus, and then something about manually driving electronic focus on electronic lenses but I hadn't heard any definitive tests yet.

Yes, with that specific lens anyway (I didn't test any others) I was able to pull focus with the Varizoom controller. So you could control it on your crane without any problem. I can understand the confusion, these lenses weren't exactly made for this application. I'm curious if other M4/3 lenses will work, so I'll make sure to test as many as I can next week.

Thanks very much, I *REALLY* appreciate this. It was one of my outstanding questions (although I have already pre-ordered anyways). I've been waiting on the birger mount as well to see if it can translate between lens and the AF100, although I am sure the performance will vary depending on lens and manufacturer. Given almost all of my crane shots are outside anyways, if I have to go with a slower lens that is controllable, that is better then nothing.

This is correct. 60p overcranked footage shows up with a data rate of about 14mb/s. It plays back at 2.5x slow mo, so 2.5x14 = 35mbps.

OK, I have consulted a technical wizard and here is the explanation of how the AF100 records when over-cranking. ..

First thing to note is that if you shoot 50p the camera plays back a 50p clip at 25p. This is because on recording it is internally buffered by the camera and the file is then recorded at 25p (The recorded file duration is then 2x real-time at 25p). This means that on playback the file remains within AVCCAM specification because the actual recorded data rate does not exceed 24Mb/s even though if you were able to play back at 50p the data rate would be double and technically could be up to 48Mb/s.

Clever stuff!

This is why you need to use premium grade SDHC / SDXC media when over-cranking.

Hope this helps.
