At first I was a little worried that it's being released too late but then again that could be a good thing because if Panasonic haven't planned to put 1080 60p into this thing, I really hope they consider it. Their is still time for them to put it in.

Panasonic please, please put 1080 60p if any heating issues can be controlled.

Give me 1080 60p or give me death.
OK so I got that from another thread concerning 24p I admit.

Anyway, not only will this be a deciding factor for some people against other cameras such as the new Sony that's getting released next year but the popularity of the TM700 is getting very big and by the time that camera hits the shelves, they'll be a whole lot more users wanting 1080 60p.

At least in the bright side, this camcorder has a lot of features people wants. I mean good form factor, multiple frames rates including PAL/NTSC switchable and native 24p as well as uncompressed HD output. I would definitely not mind owning one.

By the way, this camera does offer video output when recording internally, right?
JUST KIDDING!!

I'm pretty sure it *will* have autofocus. The GH1 has autofocus, and this unit is being designed for video professionals as well as digital cinematography. You'll undoubtedly have to use an autofocus-aware lens on it, but the GH1 (in video mode) provides smooth excellent autofocus, and I would assume (but it's only an assumption) that the new cam will have the same capability.

Even better 'cause it can be mud free. Remember, beyond the higher bitrate, it will be codec agnostic too, as you wish.

How are you planning to deliver 1080 60p? Or do you just want it for slo-mo?
Most people's PS3's are already capable of playing back 1080 60p footage from the TM700 perfectly although some people do have issues.
Windows Media and Nero can play the clips on a decent computer.

I want it for the better motion and for slow-motion. The more features the better.

Thanks Barry. I was aware of that on the GH1, which is why I thought this one "might" but I wasn't sure. I may be in the minority here, (I know there are lots of cinematography people here) but I for one hope it turns out that it does.

Does anyone know what lens is on the camera in that picture?

in one of the pictures it looks like there is a bigger (new?) lens on the body and the GH1 kit lens lying next to it.

i'm thinking that lens would work well on the gh1 too

Lens Mount and DOF Comments

Lens Mount and DOF Comments

Actually you can virtually mount any number of lenses to a 4/3s imager. We have PLs, Nikons, Canons, Olympus and Zeiss in the display case. In general, go with what you have or need. It is a very cool situation. The flange back depth is what makes the DOF closer to the 35mm image.

Best,

Jan

Jan, a couple of items to refine those statements:

First, you should be sure always to clarify that the mount is micro 4/3 - yes it is the same imager size and convertible to original 4/3 via an adapter, but it is specifically micro 4/3 that has an especially short flange-to-sensor distance and is therefore even more adaptable to many other lens mounts, vs. original 4/3. Also BTW, the micro 4/3 mount has two additional contacts that were added by the Panasonic designers, apparently for improvements in contrast AF and perhaps also video continuous-aperture operation (?) - you could certainly get clarification on that.

Second, although the short flange-back distance is great for other-brand lens adaptation per the above point, and also affords more freedom for compact lens design, it is not true that improved (i.e. shallower) Depth-of-Field has anything to do with short flange-back distance. DOF at a given aperture and field-of-view is simply due to the fact that the 4/3 imager size is significantly larger than most competing video cameras, and therefore requires less magnification to get to the final viewing size. In fact, the DOF possibilities of even-larger-sensor cameras, like the Full-Frame Canons, is shallower yet - even though they have a large flange-back distance.

Regarding lenses for shallow DOF:

If Panasonic could convince themselves to deliver some really fast, i.e. wide-aperture lenses for this camera, they would be quite popular with the shallow-DOF lovers. Presently, the 20 mm f/1.7 is the best purpose-designed micro 4/3 lens for this, but some longer fast lenses would be great.

Traditionlly, cinema and video lense lines have served the extreme-aperture (e.g. sub-f/1) territory more than still-camera lenses - that was possible because a) the focal lengths are shorter due to smaller film gate / imager size, and b) the resolution requirements are lower for motion-picture and especially video. An f/1 lens that is affordable and quite suitable for 1080p HD video might be somewhat disappointing for 12MP still photos - but could still have a wide market.

Note that people are already trying out sub f/1 C-mount and video lenses on the G-series cameras, but the results usually aren't too good for a number of reasons. Adapting super-fast still-camera lenses such as Leica Noctilux, Cosina/Voigtlander etc. gives much better results but they are expensive and relatively clumsy - they need to be purpose-designed for the application. Perhaps the pro and semi-pro video market could motivate Panasonic to add a couple such lenses to their micro 4/3 lens roadmap.

With the advent of this new camera Panasonic will definitely bring out more micro 4/3, that is a no brainer. The question is how soon will there be available.

also, people forget that these high resolutions allow for some cropping into the image. invaluable sometimes.

and itll shoot out of the box.. you dont have to pay 7000, buy viewfinders, batteries, lcd, remote or other parts that are over priced etc. etc.

so basing on what jan said... this thing resolves in 4k and resizes/outputs in 1080 hd? sweet! Thatll be one one sharp image i hope!

So true, spend the money you save on good glass, or even better yet a second camera :-D

i wonder if they will put in a digital zoom feature?
extracting 1080 out of the 12mp should provide quite useable images at long focal lengths (though it would give you the same effect as a smaller sensor camera)
