Actually you can virtually mount any number of lenses to a 4/3s imager. We have PLs, Nikons, Canons, Olympus and Zeiss in the display case. In general, go with what you have or need. It is a very cool situation. The flange back depth is what makes the DOF closer to the 35mm image.

Best,

Jan

Thanks. What is the field of view comparison to a FF imager like the Canon 5DMKII?

If I mount a Canon EF 35mm lens, what will it be on this camera?

Do you have an iPhone? Go to Apps and download PCAM. You can answer all these questions from that app. I would do it but frankly I am going to the Fujinon party, which I haven't been able to do in 10 years! Sorry. If the ? is still open tomorrow am I will give it a shot.

Best,

Yes! Yes ! YES! Panasonic is Listening! Very, very good move Panasonic. I already own some nice 4/3 glass. I also copy everyone else's push for a P2 version of this, but I guess we all will have to go Convergent Design on this. Heck, no problem, Panasonic WAS listening. My next must buy camera. Let me tell you, Just recently bought a 5D Mark II to complement my 7D and HVX200 setup, but this is certainly coming into the arsenal. Congratulations, Panasonic. Great job!

Okay several questions here. First the sensor is the same as the GH1 Lumix camera, then we optimize it for HD recording. There will not be aliasing as we actually have a clue about what causes that and since we actually build video cameras, we can engineer in the resolution. so no aliasing.

Second question, in order to get a 4K stream one would have to ahave a fairly expensive chip set that would give you two paired HD-SDI outs and record to an S-Two or some such device. This camera delivers an uncompressed HD output, if you want to by pass the AVCCAM codec, you may, but since it doesn't have the second output, no 4K.

Hope that helps,

Jan

Ouch. I hate to bust the bubble here but that chip is nice but not as good as the Canons.

Are you sure the GH1 chip and not the 14mpx GH2 chip will be used?

Interesting looking camera.

Is there a particular benefit to the chip being 12 megapixels, despite the 1080 end resolution?

Or is that just because the chip design all ready exists in the GH1?

You can't apply the Zacuto test on the DR of the GH1 to this camera.
Yes, it may be the same chip, but it's going to have a completely different DSP and implementation of the codec. That will affect and improve the DR way more than you think.

Thats pretty arguable. The Canon chips have all kinds of problems of their own.
I would say not exactly the chips but the way they've been handled. It apparently seems the same but is different anyway. Canon still rules in a few departments.

Looks like a very nice camera. Congrats to Panasonic! If they can deliver by December, then I think they'll be ahead of everyone else, including Red. I can't wait to see the footage.

I second agcohn's question: Why use a 12M pixel sensor when you're only outputting 1080 video? Will there be a version that can capture raw or compressed raw intraframe footage? SDXC should be able to handle that type of data rate. Or record to P2 if you really must.

It's interesting to read the questions non-GH1 owners are asking about this camera. For owners of the GH1 like myself, we already instantly understand how great this camera is going to be. The wide variety of lenses we will be able to use is staggering. For my GH1 I own and use Canon FD, Nikon, Olympus OM, Olympus 4/3, c-mount , and the plain-old kit lens! I was waiting to invest in a wide-angle because I thought Canon or Scarlet might come out with something new. But I'm happy to see I don't need to sell any of my lenses as I'm sticking with m4/3, so looks like I may buy the Panasonic 7-14mm f4!

You won't swap the Canon low light abilities. You can have a safe-conduct to save you from aliasing in the middle of the bunch though.

GH1 sensor ... well this camera has worst result in Zacuto DSLR shootout. Nikons an Canons were way better. I was surprised with that quality gap. Wonder if any optimalization will help :(. Maybe its not problem of chip but of codec and bitrate.

But I definitely like concept, BIG senzor, ergnonomy, size ... Things are moving, some companies are listening and thats realy good.

I'd say that better electronics, and a much more powerful AVCCAM codec at higher bitrates should aleviate the issues found in the shootout with the GH1... This ain't a GH1.

Yeah, c'mon guys. Panasonic is not stupid. They're not going to release a camera from their pro division with the performance and DR of the GH1. Not with 3 or 4 other camera manufacturers competing against them.

One of the things I really find interesting is that I can't picture canon being ready to due this quite yet, and that may hurt them big time.

Even if they threw a larger chip into an XL body, I just have no faith in their video people to back it up with the right hardware/codec support. Let alone deliver on this price point.

Maybe by mid to late 2011 they'll get on board too
