Panasonic 4K GH4 possibly coming next Spring...

I guess my Voigtlander Nokton 25mm F0.95 will work like a 62mm in 4K mode and 50mm in 1080p mode with the 2x crop m4/3rds sensor and 1.25x 4K crop sort of like the ETC mode ( 2.6x in 1080p and 3.9x in 720p) on my GH2.

According to Andrew Reid (http://www.eoshd.com/content/11934/panasonic-gh4-preview), the 96FPS is conformed to either 24P, 25P, or 29.97P.

Now, a lot of external recorders, when recording 10bit ProRes of DNxHD, max-out at 24, 25, 29,97, 30FPS - the Odyssey 7/7Q can go up to 60FPS when recording 10bit 1080P.

I was thinking, since the GH4 conforms the 96FPS to either 24P, 25P, or 29.97P, shouldn't it, theoretically, be possible to get those 96FPS in 10bit to an external recorder - since those 96FPS are conformed to a lower frame-rate that the external recorders can actually handle?

"circa 1999 euros for the body and perhaps the same again for the XLR / HD-SDI box."

yikes. 4k for 4k still a good deal, imo.

Dynamic range was also very impressive, not just on the video side. The new sensor has improved. We were showed a selection of stills that demonstrated much better highlight retention and roll off than the other cameras on display including the full frame Canon 6D and Nikon D610.
that's not saying much tbh. the last hurdle for me is the DR, i'd need to see comparison shots between BM cameras

Nikon 610 has the second best DR of any DSLR ever built, just behind the D800, so I wonder about this claim. That said, the GH3 is better than the 5d2/3 for DR.

Sensor is going to be at least 12.x stops of dynamic range, if not better. (given that gh3 sensor and other panasonic sensors of late were in this range)

4:2:2 10bit prores output should be very similar, I'd think, as BM sensor is around 13.

Not that I'd expect it to beat raw output. (of course, gh4 will have the advantage of 4k, which downsampled may give some of the BM raw stuff a run for its money where resolution quality is concerned)

I suspect with tweaking even in the in-camera 8bit output should have very solid dynamic range when we take into account our ability to control the image profile in the camera. (didn't I read we were able to tweak gamma and luminance?)

very interesting.
thanks for the input.

in that quote they're just talking about highlight recovery, not total DR
the D610 lets you get a lot of info back from your shadows, the GH4 may not (as much)

The biggest shortcoming as far as DR with any compressed codec video is shadow recovery. Deep shadow data is thrown away first in compression.

SYNCO SHUTTER

Does anyone know the particulars of the Synco Shutter? For example, on the AF100 you can set it to any speed you want. Is it like that on the GH4, or does it just have a few select presets?

The BIG difference with the GH4 is that you can bypass all that processing and go 10 bit 4:2:2 to pro res on a Ninja. Can't wait to see those tests!

10 bit 4:2:2 is a bit pointless without a descent log mode to squeeze in the DR. Maybe those Cinelike profiles are logish-like, but that´s a bit to much "almost like the real thing" "Shoot like a professional" for my taste.

What are people complaining about? It will be a $2K or sub $2K camera that shoots 4K and some amazing HD modes. 200 AllI will be amazing in camera. The 1DC is 5x the price. Lets not act like spoiled brats. The GH4 now has zebras, peaking, bars and a ton of other features people were begging from panasonic and when they deliver its still not enough? If an S35 chip and camcorder style is the deal breakers then pop over to the C100 at 3x the price and lower recording options.

I'm happy with my GH3 but for the video related functions it will be really tempting to upgrade. I personally have no interest in the XLR add on as I am happy to sync in post from the Tascam and I can mount it much more modular.
