Panasonic 2010 NAB Predictions???

I hope they come out with some 128G P2 cards. I may hold off buying more cards until then if I can. At least then the price on the 64Gs will come down.

Considering the recent rebates and price drops on the 170, I wouldn't be surprised if they upgrade it. Good thing I just bought one! :Drogar-Mad(DBG):

That would be awesome.

That would be awesome.

Maybe versions of the HMC, HPX, and HVX with fill raster HD chips?

I am holding off my purchase of an HPX to see if they release an upgraded version of any of those cams, or perhaps some sort of new hybrid P2/AVCCAM camcorder.

When IS NAB 2010? I want to know how long until these things are revealed, because I'm trying to decide if I should buy an HPX170 now, or wait...

I agree Zeke. I want to get this camera with the rebate. I would hope that Panasonic wouldn't screw over their customers by fixing a skew problem in a newer version or upgrade to the HPX 300 with a HPX300A. If they do make an upgrade, please make it available to the first round of buyers of the HPX300. I think if they fix this problem they will have way more people buying this camera!

If it was like a hardware upgrade that could minimize skewing, they shouldn't make it in a new camera, they should offer all 300 owners the ability to upgrade for a small cost at any local authorized repair center.

Oh, yes, heaven forbid that a manufacturer actually *improve* a product!

You pay your money and you make your choice and you take your chances. I certainly hope they DO improve not only the HPX300, but every model in their lineup.

And no, they don't owe anyone an upgrade. I don't understand this "entitlement" mentality one bit. When Honda sold me a 2007 Element LX, I didn't "hope" that they wouldn't "screw me over" by producing an even better 2008 model. I KNEW they would produce an even better 2008 model. But so what? I knew what the 2007 was, it suited my needs, I got it.

When they released the 2008 model, did I demand a "free upgrade" of my 2007? Um... no.

Would you really want the manufacturers to freeze development right after you buy something, so that you had the latest and greatest for the rest of all time? I say they should advance the art as fast as possible and introduce whatever new they can, and if you want it, sell your old one on ebay and buy the new one.

If such is possible, yes, that's a perfectly reasonable idea.

Barry, the problem is not upagrde itself... problem is in consumer market, where people got hooked up to always buy newer, better etc... once something new is out, older is worth nothing, but that's not true..

i love my hpx500, and of course, usb3.0 would be nice, but do i have to upgrade it now? no. it gives perfect images and will for next 5 years.

though all these upgrades which sometime happen too frequently, makes it impossible to sell say "2nd generation" equipment at a proper price, not like the car...

It's either wait and hope for something new and useful in my price range, or cash in on some of the offers on the HPX300 (2 free P2 Cards and $800 rebate)

Well, the current package offer is tempting, but the way I look at it is --
if they can afford to sell at this price today, they should be able to sell it at this price OR LOWER after NAB. We all know that as technology marches forward - especially with as competitive as the camera biz is right now - last year's models generally do not go up in price. They either get better, or cheaper, or the package deal gets better. Or all three! I can't wait for NAB but I can wait until spring to buy.

Yes it's kind of "consumerish" to upgrade faster and faster, but this is also due to the faster and faster evolution of electronics. I'm pretty new in this business, but also see that the "old" days of a digibeta, or any other "defacto" format/cameras being used for 10 years pretty much is over. We would never have 1080p consumer camcorders, RED or even the Phantom HD at their price levels without almost the revolution in electronics the last 5-8 years.

But it also depend very much on what market you work in. In Europe SD is still the primary broadcast resolution, HD still are very limited. Here in Norway, up in the cold corner of Europe, the public broadcaster estimate 2015 when all broadcast and production will be HD and they've just started to broadcast some HD.

So maybe this upgrade race is a freelance, specialized thing? Large broadcaster tend to buy gear for longer timespan, and often proven technology.

I'm almost more curios what Panasonic will make of the higher end market, the Hpx3000/3700/2700, than what they do lower end. What about a 1080p varicam that does 50p? Of utilize the Avc-ultra codec to do 4:4:4?

If Panasonic can introduce a successor to the HPX300 than the prospect of them releasing a successor to the HMC40 is possible. It's going to kill me trying to choose between the GH1's successor and the HMC40 successor although it would be nice to have both because they would make a great team. Still, I'll be happy if I can afford one of them once I sell the GH1.
