Leyritz DUI trumps my cousin

Seems like Jim Leyritz has killed a woman in an auto accident, and may have been driving drunk when he did it, according to the Yahoo website. He's out on $11 000 bail.

Early this morning, before I went to bed, Yahoo's homepage had a link about a cousin of mine being busted for wagering on tennis matches, along with another Italian player. He made 5 bets for a total of $130 (or something like that), so they fined him and suspended him for 6 weeks. He's ranked #31 in the world right now for men's singles, I believe.

None of the bets were on any matches they were playing in, and it seems like what they thought were friendly wagers between players or buddies might cost them big time in terms of money and rankings.

Of course, it isn't anything as close to the trouble Leyritz might find himself in if he goes to court and is found guilty of drunken vehicular manslaughter.

Just checked the penalty in Florida for this kind of thing...he could be going away for a very long time. I wonder how much help his World Series ring will be...

World Series ring means no jail. If you're a celebrity, you gotta screw up pretty hard to get tossed in the slammer. Look at how far Michael Vick had to go before they got him. This will be a probation with some mandatory AA classes and a suspended license for a year or two.

Pro athletes betting on their own sport sullies the game. It's much worse than Michael Vick and his dogfighting midadventures because that only tarnished his own reputation, not of the sport in general.

Sorry but giving a guy millions of dollars while completely ignoring his butchering of hundreds of dogs sullies football far more than a couple of guys making friendly wagers on matches.

That's wrong because dogfighting has nothing to do with the NFL. He's one player and there is no way his outside activities could have influenced the outcome of games, while players betting on their own sport paints the entire sport with a nasty brush because it calls into question the legitimacy of the outcome of every game. Were players easing up to meet point spreads? Pouring it on? The whole sport gets damaged. I never heard anyone say OJ's antics tarnished the NFL, so in fairness, you can't say Vick's misadventures had much influence on football's reputation. Vick was the big loser, not the NFL. If a guy wants to screw up his own life, like Vick did, fine, but betting on your own sport screws all the honorable players who toil all their lives and who play to win--not to meet point spreads.

Well, according to the two players involved, they didn't know those types of wagers (whether friendly or made through a sports book, etc) were not allowed. when they found out, they stopped.

When you look at the amounts, they are laughably small...and they were made back in 2004 and before. Right now it is costing my cousin his trip to the Australian Open, potential earnings, and his ranking...it may even affect his shot at playing in the Olympics.

I'm not defending what he did, but it seems out of proportion...even his federation is protesting the weight of the punsihment.

As for Leyritz, if the ring does let him walk away free and clean (so to speak), what kind of message are we sending to people like RCBrown on here, who have admitted guilt and selfish behaviour and want to straighten out, when guys like Leyritz can potentially get away with murder?

Wait till you win an Oscar and make millions....then drive drunk?

Brian, that's outrageous!
It's pretty obvious that Vick's actions tarnished the sport of dog fighting quite badly.

Yes, and it may take years to recover...just look at how cock fighting suffered after the 'Little Jerry' episode of Seinfeld...

I still can't find a decent match in this area.
