PanaLog for F35?!

Share when you can Mike. Curious as to what you find out.
How are you using the GDP processor?

How did you know I got a GDP unit?! Did I mention it on here and forgot? Anywho, yeah I got one via Ebay and its amazing as hell! I'm using it with my SRW1 so when I capture I have a "near finished" look to edit with. Saves time and computer power.. the little box is pretty ****ing amazing and with Panalog really lets you get the most out of things. It can have 3D Luts imported into it as well so very high possibilities to be had. Right now im just using it as it was intended, with the panalog curve.

Mike, I got a notification with a reply from you. It had details about the GDP. You must have edited the post after posting it. Looks like you are making some strides with that box. Post some clips stills when you get it all figured out. Would love to see the differences with SLog and to hear what you find are workflow advantages. And share that Panalog when you get a chance... :D

Will def share some footage once I get a workflow down i'm confident in sharing to you all :). Just want to say, the F series group is probably the coolest and most supportive group i've interacted with in this site (no offense to others :b). You guys rule and i'm happy to be apart of a family of supporters of such amazing legacy equipment *sappy response over :D* :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Processed with Panavision GDP Box - this is a custom curve i made, its a little too contrasty but reminds me of films like 2012

i'm visiting Mount Evans tomorrow which is the highest paved road in north america. On the fence about taking the rig up there and getting some vista shots. if i do, I will be working with Panalog and will report my results here on monday when I have some time off.

Should be a good opportunity to grab some good footage. Looking forwa d to the results

I didnt end up taking it with me but man, Can i just say, if any of you are in Denver between Memorial and Labor Day.. Go to Mt. Evans, it's beautiful and very surreal.

Before anyone goes off on the "Panavision" rant about stolen gear, Panavision's policy has changed they have been selling off loads of legacy gear the last 2 years. Can it handle 12-bit or it is at 10-bit level?

That is the guy I bought mine from. and Panavision made 2 PanaLogs.. one for their genesis and F35 which can handle 12bit and one for the F23 which is at 10bit. The F23 can not record in 12bit color like the Genesis and F35 can sadly.

The GDP Box works beautifully with the F23 and it's version of PanaLog. That little box is one of the single coolest things i've ever owned.

Also, you are right about Panavision.. They have been selling a crap ton of their old digital imaging gear for sometime. I would not have gotten my hands on that HD900F camera I had for a few months if it wasnt the case. My thoughts are when they were acquired a few years back by whatever company owns them now, they made Panavision ditch a bunch of old gear... I only say this because I watched PRG do it to VER when I was working there.. they went and sold so much inventory that was just sitting around in cases across the country. My F23 is a byproduct of that as its an ex-VER rental unit. Irony

What is this box exactly? Just lut box?

Pretty Much. Correct me if i am wrong but the first two cameras that shot a LOG space was the Viper and the Genesis.. I guess the Viper's big problem was the green LOG image it made and so to compete Panavision made a LUTbox for their genesis so people could see their image "near finished" on set instead of looking at LOG the whole time. You can import 3D Luts into it so it can be used for more than just PanaLog. I have yet to really dive into its potential and have been just using the presets in it for PanaLog as of right now. I have yet to see how its any different from say AJA's LUT box but by the manual it seems like a pretty powerful color management tool. It can also display 4:4:4, 4:2:2 as well as convert live 4:4:4 to 4:2:2 color space so you can use it in the field on set with monitors that cant see a 4:4:4 signal. I'm developing a workflow so I can get a LUT that will give me a near final image so when i capture from the SRW1 dock, the image can just process itself near completion.. it saves rendering time on my mac so its def a very usual time for me.

OK so only for monitoring. That big box does what F35 does in camera with sending lut out. I thought it was maybe needed to work with panalog in post. Where can I find panalog by the way?

No, its not just for monitoring. You can use it to grade your footage as you capture which is what I do. Its better than the MLUT function because you an import 3D LUTs and custom looks, etc.. where as with MLUT you are limited to what the camera has and CVP allow you to do which isnt much. I never use the MLUT tool in my camera, but that's just me. As for finding PanaLog I was given it under the pretense not to share it with others and given my respect for the person who gave it to me I am not at liberty to freely share it. I can email them to see if I can privately share their email with anyone interested and you can speak with them. Its a fellow DVXuser btw

Capture you mean tape then? OK then I see the advantage. Resolve also can add any lut to F35. Yes would be great if you PM me his contact if he is ok with it. Thank you.

Would be interesting to have panalog amongst the dvxusers.

I tend to prefer slog, but really like how they utilized panlog in ‘Apocolypto’. I can see some of those colors and gamma curve in the sample footage posted in this thread.

Do you know if they ever put in Panalog into their Panavised F3's? Seems like it would behave similarly to the F23's 10bit Panalog.

To my understanding they never formatted Panalog to work for the F3. It was for the Genesis, F23 and F35 only. F55 didnt even get it.

Gotcha, was curious what kind of differences I could pull from Panalog. Been enjoying the Slog though!

Well the interesting thing about the F23 and Genesis Panalogs are that they are rated at a dynamic range of 600% as 600% is the cap on the genesis sensor.. where as the F23 can go to 800%... So again, this is why I feel the noise levels are handled better in PanaLog because its not as high in sensitivity.. but I frankly like PanaLog better than SLog
