PanaLog for F35?!

How to find it is easy. Go to Panavision!

Getting them to load it onto a camera that isn't theirs.... not so easy.

Personally I don't see the point - finding S-Log compatible LUTs, IDTs etc... is tough enough.

In theory you might be able to take the camera and shoot carefully lit charts with the panalog and reference log gammas, and reverse engineer it... But that's a lot of effort that I doubt is worth it.

I am looking for the reference but I am pretty sure the CVP editor could pull the LUT off the camera

Yes I agree with JM, besides bragging rights, the Panalog isn't super useful outside of Panavision.

And it is dumb to "steal" it from the camera because I'm pretty sure Panavision would be willing to give a committed filmmaker a F35 or Genisis package for next to nothing. I don't want to spark another Panavision gear ownership debate but it's quite a silly conversation considering that Panavision is there to supply the support and care to a filmmaker and has the professionals who designed the Panalog and are able to make it shine.

I don't mean to be a hypocrite. I am interested in the Panalog and also I am fairly sure there is a way to pull files off cameras with CVP editor which I think would be worthwhile to explore. I am pretty sure I have a custom MLUT built into my camera. I bet as we collect the last F35's that come from around the world, there might be more cameras with unique MLUT and LUT files. It would be worthwhile to find out if it's possible.

But yeah, if you are super determined to shoot a project in Panalog to get advantage over SLOG, go to Panavision and they will be the best way to achieve your vision.

To clear things up a little bit, here is a comparison that I shot with my F35 with the PanaLog installed. When I get the chance I will upload a test so you can see the difference in motion.

1st Photo is S-Log
2nd Photo is PanaLog

I'm not trying to spark a debate, but if Panavision gives/sell a Genesis to a private owner I'll drink a Bud Light and say it was delicious.

When this Panalog LUT was first mentioned in this forum I delved into the F35 manual and the CVP manual, and while there are documented procedures for pushing LUTs to the camera, there are none for extracting them from the camera.

I don't think Panalog actually is an advantage over S-Log anyway - not really. It would be most useful for matching Panalog content from another camera. And if you are renting from Panavision, all the more likely the tech might let you have the LUT for your F35 to match - particularly if doing so helps them secure the rental.

I sure hope I don't have to drink a Bud Light and say it was delicious...

A friendly techie might give you a copy of Panalog for sure, but a Genesis is definitely not being sold.

Panavision are actually still using some of the Genesis/F35s too.

So here is a quick little test comparison between S-Log and PanaLog.

Recorded on Hyperdeck / Uncompressed / Ungraded

It was compressed to .h264 for vimeo. Vimeo did some weird compression in the first seconds. But you can see the difference between S-Log and PanaLog.

1st clip is always S-Log
2nd clip is always PanaLog

Well, I'd definitely say that the S-Log is more flat and would need more grading and with the PanaLog you have an almost "graded" look, with more details and contrast. I will do some more testing and will put up a graded version of both, to see any differences. It could be, that PanaLog already looks a little bit "graded", in order to have a quicker grading process in the end. Not sure about that.

I have graded both files with the exact same procedure in DaVinci. I saved the grade of the S-Log and added the exact same correction to the PanaLog. I used a Kodak Visioncolor Impulz Lut as a Film Negative Emulation in Cineon Log as a base node. I then graded. As a final node I applied a Kodak Film Print Emulation.

It looks like the PanaLog gives an overall boost in the highlights and midtones. You can see the difference on the right hand corner in the trees. The highlights in the trees are blown out in the PanaLog. The overall image also seems more contoured.

The "shining" added in the PanaLog is nice, but am not sure whether I would use S-Log or PanaLog for a feature.

1st still is S-Log
2nd still is PanaLog

I believe Panalog was designed to use as much of the available recording medium as possible, where Sony chose to leave some wiggle room. I'm not sure why.

Panalog was pretty much designed to be used in conjunction with a GDP or something similar.

Were you ever able to extract the PanaLog from the camera or replicate it in CVP file editor? I'm trying to find it to run my own tests on my F23. I reached out to my friends at Panavision and have yet to hear back.

Keep us posted Mike

I was able to get PanaLog from another DVXuser and i'm doing some private tests to get a workflow down and am really amazed by the results. Once I have some time to shoot something solid I will share a video with you guys.

Share when you can Mike. Curious as to what you find out.
How are you using the GDP processor?
