PAN AM to fly again

The link (from August 31) even says: "The pilot was shot on ARRI Alexa cameras by the DP, John Lindley."...

Maybe I will be proven wrong, but I just don't see this show working.

It looks like they are trying to create something between "Mad Men" and "Sex and the City," but it seems to lack the lack the interesting profession of "Mad Men" and the hip, current world of "Sex and the City."

It would have been great in the 70's...
Exactly.

You just don't see many girls these days dreaming about being Flight Attendants. Flying around the country might have seemed like a sexy career in the past, but these days, most people think of flying as a miserable experience.

I believe Pan Am is the 'answer' to the Playboy Club.
But the way ABC likes to kill new shows it may not last.

I'll give it a shot however.

Shoot the pilot was funny BTW.

If they shoot the pilot, who will fly the plane?
Since the pilot has been shot, the show is on, well... Autopilot...

Case in point- I bet the production process is waaaay more interesting than the show will be.
Ahhh... the early 60's, when men were mad, women were repressed, and everybody drank and smoked non-stop (especially on the planes!).

And BTW, is that a strange, washed out greenscreen, or is it just the ungraded footage?

My fave- the fan/I mean windmachine...

Somebody needs to redo those effects with this:

Don't worry Raster, I didn't miss your humor. No tracking markers on that shot... interesting.

Tough crowd.

Well, I've actually had the privilege of seeing the pilot (episode, that is, not the guy who flies the planes). I've actually seen almost every pilot to every show this coming season. I intend, hopefully this weekend, to give a long list of what I think here, but since someone started this thread, I felt compelled to comment.

First things first though. I have a real affinity for the topic. As a boy I had the fortune to fly on a few Pan Am jets and remember it fondly. I also had the unreal luck of visiting the Trippe House in the Bahamas a few years ago, and am a fan of aviation (Juan Trippe was a co-founder and CEO of Pan Am). So going in I'm biased, and very interested. Having gotten that bit of disclosure out of the way...

I really liked the show. It was much more to me than the glitz and glam of being a stewardess in the late 1960's on a prestigious airline. There is excellent structure in the story, and attention to detail beyond the simple attempt at authentic production design and great old songs. The plot moves along well, with good character arcs and sub plots that definitely kept me interested beyond the simple warmth in my heart of seeing beautiful Pan Am stewardesses, beautiful 707's, the Pan Am (now Met Life ) building in NYC and life from the jet set age of my youth. And Christina Ricci is terrific as ever.

Overall I thought it was wonderful and think it could have wings. You may not see it with my eyes, but I hope when you see do, you'll at least like it too.

Hey Snowleopard Snowleopard! that was me Raster I started this thread, but please don't tell the producers about shooting the pilot, even though Hidef1080 and Erik Olson liked it :)

Yes I think it's got a good chance .. great old songs you say, wonderful!! count me in, first class front row seat thank you.

There's a few more comments about shooting green screen on that link now .. very interesting.

Cheers.

Ha!

My connections aren't that good. Believe me, I'm about as significant as the guy that refills the peanuts in the cabin galley between flights.

Check out the promo vids here, great lines like 'welcome to the jet age' and 'are you wearing your girdle?' that slap ha ha.

That sounds like Aussie Tom Burlinson singing the title 'Come fly with me' Oh the residuals.

I worked at Qantas here as a 17yr old apprentice, spent 9 months working in life rafts for Super Constellations. Damn chalk dust everywhere.

A high of the week was taking a group of new hosties to Rockdale baths to teach them how to blow up a 22 man life raft, and climb into it. I'd pray for rainy days, whereupon we'd all get in, pull the curtains for some one on one instruction.

Eventually Qantas said I was to tall to be a pilot :kali: and I left.
Cheers.
