PAL/NTSC Dilemma

Ok so I'm torn...

The HVX sounds great. I want to make independent cinema, so I want 24p. However I live in a PAL country, so If I also want to use the camera for video, then I want 50i. But the 50i 'PAL Model' doesn't offer 24p, only 25p. I dont want 25p, I have no use for 25p, and I don't want to accept the 4% speed change that I would get by playing back 25 fps at 24 fps.

Is it so hard to offer 24p AND 50i? Even the sony z1 can offer 60i and 50i in the one machine... and with the advantages of the p2 format, surely we could record onto the cards at either frame rate without too much fuss.

Should I just bite the bullet and import an NTSC model, so that I can have 24p, giving up on being compatible with TV/Video standards where I live?

What are other non NTSC region people going to do? I'd like to hear from you...

pal/ntsc

pal/ntsc

i've got the same dilemma. is it the same resolution for both versions in hd?
my installation is ntsc compatible, just have to change preferences in fcp if i import the cam, no? what dont u like in 60i?

Guys this shouldnt be a problem at all. In PAL land if you want to go to telecine to film then you are right, they will have to alter the speed of sound buts that's all. You wont be losing anything else.
Playing back 25p on in pal land a tv set means you dont get that awkward pull down business they have to deal with in ntsc. Also if you still use standard definition pal has 25% more resolution. Lets put this into perspective. The ntsc dvx100 with anamorphic adaptor will only equal the pal dvx with letterboxing only!

Short answer is to stick to pal and let the film houses deal with the issues in transfering to film. Most of use wont be transfering to film anyway and you CANNOT tell the difference between 25 or 24p.

Wow, do you really think you can notice when you film out 25p to 24p?

I myself am going to go PAL and use 25p. I've never gone to film, but I have shot progressive and watched it and it feels like a film cadence to me.

Seeing as I use my camera for more than film stuff, if I was shooting 60i, then people would hate me here where it's 50i, so that factors in quite considerably.

25p to film - no problem, surely?

And why not use progressive for video? I much prefer the look.

The only difficult thing I've found is going from 25p or any PAL format to NTSC MPEG2 for DVD distribution. Took me along time to find a transcoder that would do the job without 'phasing' artifacts. (TMPGEnc)

Yes going from 25 to 24 aint a problem, almost every cinemamovie that u see in europe on a tv set has gone from 24 to 25 without you even noticed it.

The pal hvx will probobly have more resolution when it comes to how it stores the picture, not in actual resolution. Heard something as 1440*1080 at 25P 100 mbs

the thing a gonna miss with the PAL model is 720 60 fps. Of course you could do nice stuff with 50P but 10 more frames wouldnt hurt...

Why can't we just have ONE standard.. Digital was our chance, but alas.. No.

I REALLY wish they'd make the HVX a switchable cam like the Z1. I shoot a lot on both sides of the pond, that switchability is big bucks for me!

What do you mean?

I was suggesting that the quote's use of "mode" may imply that you can switch between 50i/25p and 60i/24p/30p all in the same camera.

hmm.. I do see your point. Though I belive it's just a porly worded statement.
I think (PLEASE prove me wrong..what's one more switch/option Panny) that the PAL moddel is seperate.

I've been doing that for a long time. use progressive footage for DVD. Not only do I get a nicer look from my PAL DVD, but when I want to transcode to NTSC I just need to interpret 24, resize, and encide at 29.7 (23.7 internal). Perfect results.
